What does Benny Gantz's ultimatum mean for Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government? | Inside Story

- A new crisis for Benjamin Netanyahu at a time when public anger against his handling of the war on Gaza is rising with each passing week.
Senior minister Benny Gantz is threatening to quit Israel's coalition government if Netanyahu doesn't come up with a plan for the strip's post-war governance within three weeks.
Gantz has tabled his own goals, which include an international coalition to administer Gaza's civil affairs.
It's put Netanyahu in a tough spot. Accepting the suggestions put forward by Gantz could cost Netanyahu the support of far-right partners and topple his government.
So, how will the deepening divisions in the war cabinet affect his coalition?
And what could they mean for the future of Israel's war on Gaza?
Presenter: Cyril Vanier
Guests:
Udi Goren -- Cousin of an Israeli whose remains are being held by Palestinian fighters in Gaza
Yossi Mekelberg -- Associate Fellow at the Middle East and North Africa Programme at the UK think tank Chatham House
Alon Liel -- Former Israeli diplomat

netanyahu should go to jail
Agree
Why just him?
He will be in eternal jail (jahannam) soon
he will as soon as the conflict is over...thats why hes dragging his heels in ending it.
Indeed
Udi's total lack of empathy for anyone other then his cousin is truly astounding.
Lack of emphaty is due to maoa variant. Mutations due to inbreeding.
@@gilgameshur5366 No it is not. It is due to childhood sexual abuse. It is an entire society made up of pedophiles.
Nearly threw up when he said that proper buriel was important for his people, what about the tens of thousands of Palestinians ?? are they just animals !!
Same here! Viscerally Nauseating
the palestians are not israel’s concern
Let's be clear. The hostage families want their relatives released. But AFTER the release the majority of them are perfectly comfortable with the genocide of the Palestinians proceeding.
Makes it hard for the rest of us to feel heartfelt sympathy.
agree 100% The problem doesn't simply lie on Netanyahu as president which most media and people focus on but Israeli society as a whole. The selfish atitude has to go. Palestinians should decide who they elect, end of discussion. If Israelis wants continue their selfish atittude then we'll see wether Israel is a country left in a couple years...
Nope. Not the parents and relatives of the hostages. They are concurrently demanding an end to the war, and an exchange of hostages and Netanyahu to quit. I have been following them on X.
They also want 2 state solution and rights for the Palestinians.
All of this! 🙌🏻✨
@@arem1091except that's just simply not true. The data does not back that statement
Palestinian will elect its own leaders.
💯👍
So sickening how they’re usually left out of that part of it.
@@rainedyani8505They won’t be left out of it this time and US, Israel and EU have nothing to do with it. They leave Palestinians alone FOR ONCE! Enough is Enough.
Yes, it's shocking how everyone seems to think what Palestinians want is irrelevant
I Hamas is forced out then Netanyahu's terrorist government should be ousted also.
Unless I missed it, not one mention of the Palestinian hostages held by Israel?
Honestly if Israelis can just move on from this, that's delusional. You don't just move on from genocide.
The man talking about his cousin does not once mention the thousands of civilians being slaughtered. It’s all about Israel, their hostages, their reputation. So disgusting.
Now we know these folks have been universally booted out from everywhere.
This is how personality disorders talk. They only think of themselves
He seems like a really dumb guy.
Prior to the 7th. Israel locked up ten thousand Palestinian "Hostages" where is the global outcry over them !
So the life of the palestian people is not important enough to talk about
Of course not. That would be anti-Semitic. Israelis are God's chosen people. We must only take into account their feelings, never the facts.
@OneSixSun god commandent says thou shall not kill . If u r gods choosen ppl, all human lives matter
A coalition that doesn't involve Palestinian voices is just another way of dehumanizing them. I'm amazed of the lack of humanity that is shown on a a daily basis of a people who ancestors went through the same thing.
It is really simple. Because Hamas is weak and Palestinians have always been weak. In the 1930s Palestinians rebelled against the British and lost much of their strength. 10 years later they fought another major war in 1947 losing again. After 1948 war, their arab neighbours land grabbed for themselves and left the Palestinians with nothing. Payment had to be made to their neighbours. If Israel is gone. Egypt will move north. Hezbollah will move south. Jordan will take over Jerusalem. Palestinians will be forced off the coast, so they will never be able to contest the natural gas reserves. Arabs are not going to give any thought to human rights, because the war will be fought on religious grounds
@@987ujhplReally going out of your way to compliment Israel for their ongoing genocide because you believe it could be worse for the Palestinians in your made up scenario. Way to bring victim blaming to whole new pathetic level.
@@slothachunk It is factual in 1948, Gaza was taken by Egypt. West Bank by Jordan. Jerusalem by Jordan as well. The Arab countries left Palestinians with nothing.
And Hezbollah and Hamas are from conflicting religious sects. The only thing that unites them is Israel.
Jordan still holds religious and administrative control of Jerusalem. Doubt they are going to cede Jerusalem to Hamas once Israel is gone.
Palestinians have more than just Israel as a problem. Once they are successful in removing Israel. they better have a plan to deal with their "Brothers". Their "Brothers"
are just more ruthless than Israel.
When will these occupiers show the least bit of concern for all the Palestinian families?!
If they haven't shown concern when the death toll has breached 35,000, we might be waiting a long time for that concern to come.
Udi, thanks to your BB, cousins of 35,000 people also did not get to give their loved ones a proper burial. Some were buried, but in mass graves. I am sorry for your loss, but tens of thousands of parents can't even give their children a proper burial.
Thank you, the nerve of these losers.
Exactly, I agree😅
But, but, but what about me. This guy cares only for himself.
@@bendyrland7213 seems that way, no?
I am not sorry- his cousin was partying next to Concentration Camp& his country with the overwhelming support of israelis approve this HOLOCAUST!!!!
Israel needs to return to their 67 borders as a minimum. Remove all settlers from the West Bank. Allow a UN alliance to enter Gaza and the West Bank to help build a stable, democratic governance to both. Allow Israel to build their biggest walls, their iron domes and allow the right of return for displaced Palestinians. A simple solution that Israel would never agree to.... So, who is the problem here?
The so called west bank comprises of Judea Samaria and Hebron does that sound like should occupied by the Arabs instead of jews
@@User42214 The West Bank is Palestinian territory, sorry you dont like international laws.... But, hey, if you want to split hairs, yes, the West Bank should be inhabited by Arabs, it belongs to Jordan!
@User42214..That is the mentality that is going to end the Zionist project..
Remove all settlers from the West Bank is the problem. Israel is bankrupt and doesn't have the money to build houses for 750,000 moaning, groaning Americans and Europeans who thought the West Bank was a steal.
@@akwamarsunzalBut if Israel did all that there will be no Greater Israel which is what this is all about just taking land off Arab peoples.
I almost spit out my drink when Udi said it was a waste of time for Isrli soldiers dying if the war cabinet couldn't achieve its goals. Must be really comfortable in Udi's bubble that he not once thinks of the millions of Palestinians killed before and after Oct 7. Good for you, Udi. That bubble must be insulated very well.
I know like what’s the difference him and Bibi will commit war crimes regardless.
Udi is a perfect representation of the atypical Israeli; selfish, self absorbed and completely indifferent to what it is to be Palestinian. I scoffed when he mentioned the importance of burial rights … so what are we to be perfectly fine with tens of thousands of Palestinians left buried under the rubble; with their bones encased in rubble that has been used to build America’s BS pier????
They have always been a selfish people. There were polls to see about Gaza, and they ALMOST 70%(Isreel civilians) said ALL Palestinians need to die. These people don't care about others. They are the most selfish people in existence. And have never had accountability for their heinous actions. This is why they act this way.
@OneSixSun Udi made TWO points:
1) If a war never ends then there is no victory.
Without victory combatants will have given their lives in vain.
2) Netanyahu does _NOT_ want an end to the war _because_ his career will end when the war ends.
They can't see anything past themselves.
What about the Decades of bleeding wounds Israel has left on the Palestinian population
I wrote something similar, something about excising the cancer of segregation and apartheid instead of merely treating the symptom of changing leadership, and YT deleted my comment. It's been 107 years since Britain's Lord Balfour allowed refugee European Jews to settle in Palestine as their homeland. But no, Oct 7 is what anyone wants to focus on.
I too have had many of my comments taken down. No bad language on my part, just a cry for Humanity, pro Palestinian and pro justice for war crimes and a ceasefire
@@junebrilly5302yes, TH-cam is rather pro-Israel… unfortunately there isn’t much options….
Too late you’re going to jail for war crimes.
what is he talking about, his cousin is dead. If they had not destroyed the whole Gaze, and negotiated on 8 oct, no hostages would be dead. These more ons.
Exactement, mon ami. Stupid is as stupid does.
Yes.
Racism clouds your vision and eliminates any semblance of basic human decency

@@OneSixSun come on down brah
5:21 ~ I’m already through watching this because what Benny is asking for won’t be acceptable for Palestinians; and if it isn’t for them, then it’s not for me. Free Palestine from the occupation of the IOF and give them the right to make autonomous decisions for THEMSELVES!
It's a lot to expect hard right governments to be creators of something good
There are 3 minimum requirements for a "day after"-scenario in order for it to lead to a lasting peace:
1) truckloads of cash for the rebuilding of palestine society.
2) a viable path to a palestinian state within years.
3) a multinational security force both sides can trust.
If any of these 3 isn't there, the plan will fail.
And in the mean time of the rebuilding, that would take years, Palestinians should move to Israeli occupied land that is livable
I agree
Or a 'one-state' solution allowing for Palestinians to return to where they were displaced from.
@@CB-zb7ik although i would love to see a one-state solution where everybody has the same rights regardless the religion, it's not going to happen within our lifetime.
Statehood is prerequisite to everything else. They have to be able to speak and act on their own behalf and they must have sovereign legal authority over their own territory.
This is also a land and resource theft.
Short answer to your headline question: Nothing at all! You can demand of a warmongering megalomaniac whatever you want, it won't change his mind.
Sadly, probably true.
“Pose a significant threat not only to the lives being sent into rafah aka IDF but also hostages” dude couldn’t even say it played a significant threat to Palestinian civilians and Israelis wonder how they played a role in this conflict continuing for 75 years. I empathize with Israeli hostage families but that comment and how he worded it is precisely the problem to this conflict and their blindside in what they are asking.
But don't tell him that. His sense of exceptionalism might get offended and then you'd be labelled anti-Semitic. The lives of 200 hostages is far more valuable than that of 14,000 Palestinian children. They're so exceptional they don't infer sarcasm nor irony.
They don’t consider them human.
6:00 "It is not just skin and bones being held in Gaza." These people are insane, he is talking about Israeli 'feelings of closure,' while morbidly and unconsciously referring to the starving children who are dying in Gaza by the thousands. I can't listen to another word.
Thank You Al Jazeera.
Sorry, bravery can not be manufactured. Generous shipments of arms from alliances did not help..
As efficient as they like to make themselves appear, they really need 3 weeks for something that has been going on for over 7 months? 🙄
😂
It'd be good if we had confirmation that the protests in Israel are strictly for calling for the return of the hostages, and not for a ceasefire. I mean, such details can mean so much.
In the current political atmosphere in Israel, protests calling for the release the hostages are equivalent to calls for a ceasefire.
Fair point.
I do not think so, if h.mas di not have hostages probably israhelies would be ok with way tje war is going @@TheShacharZiv
Yes, Israelites only care about their hostages. Not about palestinians lives. And that’s why it is so hard to empathize with them. If it was up to them, they would finish the genocide to free the hostages.
So …… Israel must ALSO return the Palestinian Prisoners who died in Israeli prisons , not just the dead Jews …. The Palestinians are also humans
We already quit that corporation named Israel. Ceos
Al-Jazeera became the best news broadcaster since the Palestinian war began
Man, Palestinians really weren't being treated like autonomous humans in this discussion
there are always people who dont agree with policy bennys virtue signaling wont do much
Let’s not forget that Izrell is holding THOUSANDS of Palestinian hostages - many of them tortured on a regular basis…
Didn't he threaten to quit before ...
They just will replace him with another religious fanatic and call it a day. As they value him anyhow.
No problem, Bye bye.
I hate the fact that we are sitting here listening to some Israeli guy moan about his family members remains, as if we should shed a tear for his loss , as opposed to the 30+ thousands of Palestinians that aren't even being mentioned in this conversation. Gants, Satinyahu or whoever, doesn't matter to me at this point. They are all killers in business suits. Palestine should govern itself and Israel needs to get the eff out!
I am irked by the fact that they fail to include Palastinians in deciding their own future?????
I think they wanted an organized discussion of what the Israelis want without any shouting and waste of time arguing. It would quickly have turned into a big train wreak.
Exactly, I agree😢
I thought I would watch this to try and learn what their perspective is but honestly I can't even continue to watch.
Very good discussion. The interviewer is pretty sharp!
Well…..the trouble from within…nice thing to see.
It's all part of the plan. Same story different day
Always about them.
Stop WARCRIMES! Free Palestine!
Netanyahu need to resign
Actually, he needs a long sojourn in the HAGUE
Wow That Guy didn't once mention the 9000 + Palestinian Hostages taken since 7 10
It's so easy TWO STATES period
Colonialists think of theirs only.
Not of occupied.
It is like watching a panel of rapists discussing victims rights. They don't think they have any, so the entire discussion is about how to control and punish them. It is bizarre to watch. They are pathological.
OMG Can't listen Anymore To WHAT IZ WANTS!!! THEY are Holding HUMANITY HOSTAGE! WTF
Who is going to pay for the rebuilding of Gaza? What will happen to the massive number of Palestinians who have lost everything due to the Israeli bombings?
A prison for Satanyahu does not justify the thousands of innocent Palestinians murdered by Isrli Diapers force and thousands Palestinian hostages tortured in Isrli prisons.
I am surprised that nobody labeled him as antisemite.
A new country, Palestine, born this summer 😄😄😄👍👍🙏🙏
Who dare Agree? That Absolute, Honest, Unbiased and Objective Truth and Justice prevail ?
Not one mention of Palestinian suffering, they werent even asked about it. That would never happen if there were 3 Palestinians being interviewed.
Palestinians need self determination not a "civil administration" that prioritisises "Israeli security control"
Who owns the Gaza Strip,Gaza and Palestine where the voices of what the people want seem unable to have a sharing for the world?
@24.00 that is the issue. They care only about their own people coming back, they don't care how many Gazans get killed in this process......
Does this man realise how many Palestinians have not been able to bury their relatives.
Does he realize referring to them as "skin and bones" is a reasonable description of the children they are deliberately starving in Gaza? The level of toxic narcissism is really shocking.
Great Job!!!
They are all looking after their own skin, standard behaviour
Discussion of the day after is keyword for returning things to how they were before Oct 7. That'd not an option. 2 state solution or else.
No ultimatum can move or shift Netanyahu's determination and commitment.
I'm a Hispanic man from Australia on the centre right leaning side of things and I disagree with Mr. Hassan and MSNBC nbc etc on alot but I have to say Mr. Hassan has wiped the floor with anyone who debates him on this specific issue about Israels war period! I listen to both sides consistently and I have to say objectively Mr. Hassan is right imo. Now let's see what the investigations bring. If Mr. Natanyahu has nothing to hide or worry about then why wouldn't he welcome an independent investigation? Also remember it's an investigation and allegations on BOTH SIDES here so it's the right thing to do. There's been to much blood spilt on both sides and it needs to come to an agreement. Now is the time and opportunity to do so or else our kids will be having to watch debates about more and more deaths years from now and that's not good for either side... ✌🏻
Israel should have absolutely zero say in what happens to Gaza after a ceasefire. Also the USA & UK, Australia ect should have no rights to say happens after. The only thing they should be able to do is provide funding. It should be left to whoever Palestinians feel comfortable working with.
Quit

That guy thinks Gantz Is serious and sincere I this position on the hostages....nope.
I say Gantz is going to lose big.
He could go anytime, he was not an elected person. He could be replaced anytime but not the prime minister!
Good cop/Bad cop.............when the SHTF, they're BOTH cops.
My deepest sympathies to the man who lost his cousin on Oct. 7th and has not been able, along with his family and friends to give him a proper burial. "Be angry, yet sin not." Just as I am trying to not judge all of Israeli society by the behavior of their leaders and the actions of the IDF. I pray also that he judges not all Palestinians by the behavior and actions of the Hamas fighters. All people, of every nation, tribe and tongue have a God given right to dignity, freedom, safety and security in this life. I pray a permanent ceasefire agreement will come swiftly and all who are missing their loved ones, dead or alive, will have the closer they need and no more innocent lives be taken from either side. May God be with us all. Amen
Ok. OK. The pier is done now, I guess we have some secret weapons coming in next now that we have navy military access in the area .. submarines what? Nukes nukes nukes. In the area? US, aid???

Why doesn’t Netanyahu release ALL the Palestinian captives first???
That’s not bad. But they wouldn’t be able to destroy the influence of Hamas.

Palestinians will govern themselves

I wonder how this all would have played out if Naftali Bennett was still in office. What do you think??
Bennett is as bloodthirsty and emotional as they come.
Of course the bodies of hostages, Israeli loved ones, should be returned. I don't believe however, that it is a wound more profound than any Palestinian child, ,mother, son, father that will never have that closure of a loved one's body being returned - as those in mass graves and under the rubble were not buried with any respect either. I always wonder how many Israeli's think of the tragedy and trauma of the 38 thousand Palestinians that have lost their lives in this war, and all the thousands of survivors traumatized for life. If occupation and apartheid doesn't end, if Palestine is not given statehood and self determination - none will be safer in the long term. Israeli must give up control of Gaza and return lands in West Bank - according to international law - if Gantz can't get there, can't give up control of Palestinians - his plan will also fail.
Statehood for Gaza! Palestine deserves to exist as a state and Gaza does not belong to the Israelis. They don't control it, they don't own it. Gaza should declare full independence from Israel and hold a new election as soon as possible.
👍
Benny should surrender himself to the international authorities for war crimes.

Fascinating insights by Udi Goren. The empirical facts create a web of laws such that this then that. An insight at odds with the zionist insistence that a different set of laws obtain axiomatically, from the mouth of God, so to speak.
The Israelis do not seem to realize they are terribly outdated.
Respectfor death and a decent burial appeara common value to me. Nevertheless I am surprised to hear that this is feeply embedded in the Israeli culture.and why? The IDF buldozered numerous graveyards inside Gaza and destroyed many of the buried bodies. I never heard that this resulted in any condemnation by the Israëli people.
