Had this gun in my time in the army. I actually did a full auto, with about 200-250 rounds without stopping. Pipe was so overheated that it went red. My buddy fired 50 rounds of tracers during nighttime. That was awesome. Very, very reliable machinegun, and it almost never had a functionerror. A bitch to walk with, when we went fieldtraining. Very uncomfertable to wear, and it weighs around 13-14 kg, besides your other equipment.

fun fact: due to the Treaty of Versailles (which was primarily meant to punish Germany for its part in WW1), Germany was not allowed to buy or make any Maxim type machine guns. So they wound up creating the MG34 and eventually the MG42. Thank-you, Treaty of Versailles, for giving us one of the greatest weapons ever

Mg42 Had two models, earlier design fired up to 1500rpm but it caused feeding issues and went through barrels and ammo too quickly so they dropped it down to 1200rpm, the MG3 they swapped to 7.62 from 7.92 and lowered the rpm to 1000rpm

The Norse Wind Would be new to me. The MG3 shoots 1200 rpm, that is what soldiers get teached in armies who use the MG3 and that is also what Wikipedia says. It only has 1200 rpm because the bolt is made heavier to increase the barrel changes. It's true though that there are two versions of the MG42 were made, the only changes between them was how they were produced, the earlier model wasn't made that clean and had many problems. The later one still had the same fire rate but it was produced way better and cheaper. In the end of WW2 there was even a MG45 which basically was the same weapon but it had a fire rate of 1800 rpm. The MG1 (Which was the older MG3) first also had 1500 rpm but in 1969 they turned it down to 1200 rpm.

Yeah, still one of our masterpieces but have you ever seen the German G3?
It's shooting in faster increments than MG42 if you take machine gun mode but you can use it as an assault rifle, sniper rifle and as usual rifle too. I think they even developed a tool for it, thats a little grenade launcher, you can just stick on its top.

If you look at it's contemporaries, the Browning .30 cal and the British Bren Gun, you'll see how advanced the MG-42 really was. That the U.S. incorporated much of it's design into the M-60's which still can be found all over the world and in the hands of the U.S. Special Forces and SEALs as the Mk 43 is a hell of a compliment to German Engineering during WWII.

+spottydog4477 You are wrong. The rate of fire had a huge shock factor on anyone hearing it on the enemy lines. Also, even trough it had probably the best fire rate of it's time it was one of the if not the most accurate machine gun. The fact that it ran out of ammo does not make the gun flawed, it just means that the local troops where not prepared, and as we all know Germany was not prepared for the D-day.
The barrel change was not very frequent for those that knew how to use it. And even if it was, it never hindered the capability of the weapon because of how fast the action was.
You would just open the top chassing above the barrel, take it out, put another one in, close it and you're good to go. The operation would take under 30 seconds in good hands.
And considering that it is still used today as a general purpouse machine gun in many places under the shape of MG-3 I would say it did more than one thing well.

+Grim Reaper 30 seconds??!! maybe if you are drunk and high at the same time, lol. the way we trained to operate it in the field it barely took 8 seconds. the exchange barrel is literally right next to you, laying open and easily accessible on the barrel transport case. there is even a specially designed piece of thick cloth in case you have no gloves, so you can handle a hot barrel fast and efficient. and again, that is under field conditions, when you are on the move with your group. i bet in a fortified pill box the conditions would've been even better.

@@wolfganghuhn7747 Correct but in the danish manual it says to have the bipod perpendikular but that dosent work, if you have a little body mass you can keep it rock steady when leaning in. we still have it in Denmark and i loved that gun. I could have 200 rounds in my winter hat and have the chin wraps round left hand then there was no foul on the belt feed and position shift was smooth vithout helper.

impressive weapon. I served in the Italian Army nrl 1992/93 and I was an assault rifleman in an Alpine department. we had (in addition to the BM-59 ta, the MG-42/59 and among the troops, she was affectionately called Maria Grazia. on a mission in Mozambique (onumoz) we used it both on the fifth wheel of our 4x4 VM-90, on the FIAT 6614 and in a fixed position on the ground on the TRIPOD, very reliable and with a great feeling of omnipotence 😜!!.Greetings from Italy ✌.

If that locking surface is worn out, the bolt can't lock open and just continue to fire. Up to the piont, where only splitting the belt would stop it. Also seen on the early M60, which uses a lot of similar parts of the MG42.

@@jessestinson3560 I mean you'd never fire continuously on a bipod anyway in a war, and it's pretty clear why. The recoil pushes you back a lot, as seen in this video. On a proper tripod or similar you should also avoid firing continuously since the barrel heats up too quickly that way.
Edit: also you should probably be finding a new target after firing a burst like that

These things are awesome. So incredibly simple, and yet so effective. Basically unchanged since ww2, and still in use. They need to make an mk2 version! Just needs a front grip of some kind, and maybe a rate of fire adjustment option, like the BAR. Instead of auto and semi, fast auto and slow auto. And a quick attach/detach tripod attachment point. Then you could use it as a GPMG, SAW, or CQB. And less muzzle flash would be nice. Maybe swap some parts out for plastic, or titanium to balance the weight with new attachments. Ghost ring sights. And you could attach a scout scope where the rear sight is, would be effective especially for a MG, keeping your field of view intact while looking for other targets.

In Germany we call this Gun the "Nazi-Sense", the German Army is still using a modified Version as "MG 3". I was 4 Years in the German Army and this Weapon is simply amazing. But he isn't using it correctly in this Video. You must push your whole Body Weight into the Gun, push it forward, until the Weapon is extremely quiet in your Shoulder. And the recoil is acceptable, so the Shooter can achieve good Results. The Bipod serves as a Barrier, pressing your Body Weight into the Weapon until it no longer works.

+RedBaron1418 Was a MAG gunner (FN MAG) in the South African army 83-85. True what you say. When firing from a lying position the bipod must fold under the gun ie lean into the gun and then fire. 3-5 round burst is the ideal. The MAG can be fired standing up, lean forward. As a MAG gunner I have always had the urge to be able to operate a MG 42 solely for the rate of fire. That said, I dont think that the MG 42 can be fired from a standing position. The MAG weighs a tad under 11 kg's with a 700-900 rpm rate of fire. The MG 42 is a bit heavier but with a 1300+- rpm rate of fire I would hesitate to try and fire the MG 42 standing up even knowing the rpm rate of fire.

I was stationed Germany from 05 -10. I fired german weapons once. Both the g36 and the machine gun. The rate of fire is much faster compared to the m240b. I learned fast to keep those bursts short n sweet otherwise you'll piss away your ammo real fast

I'm not the biggest WW2 expert but I've been an avid WW2 buff since I was old enough to understand the war and it's implications. The MG42 was indeed ahead of it's time, and it was indeed terrifying for the allied troops who had to face it. In hindsight though, it was a bit impractical. Unlike the MG-34 that came before it.
Now I'm not an expert on the MG-42. I don't own one, I've never maintained one. I have shot them on two occasions. One was completely unmodified, and the second gun had a heavier bolt and stiffer recoil spring, and this reduced the rate of fire quite a bit. More on that later. The reason I say the gun was impractical is for a couple of reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, the high rate of fire made the guns prone to firing out of battery. This is obviously not good for the weapon, or the shooter. If a round detonates before it's fully seated in the chamber, the gun will likely be taken out of action with damage to the receiver, a sheered off firing pin, you get the idea. If this happens in a pivotal moment, it could mean the difference between holding a position or losing it. Some other issues is the MG-42 chewed through ammo and barrels like crazy. Thus why the Germans came up with the ingenious quick-change barrel design on the 42. A fantastic solution for the time. Pretty much fail-proof and barrel changes were done in seconds, not minutes. But, the gun went through a lot of ammo and barrels had to be replaced constantly.
So, back to the modified MG-42 that I shot. Due to the heavier bolt and recoil spring, the rate of fire came down to somewhere between 950rpm and 1000rpm. I think the MG-42 would've been even more lethal if the German's modified them in the same way and brought their rate of fire down. 950rpm is still blazing fast and still faster than anything the allies had at the time. The gun would've been more controllable, more accurate. It would've been just as proficient for suppressing fire. Barrel life would've been extended slightly, and ammo consumption would've improved slightly as well. Enough to make any kind of difference? Hard to say in hindsight. But the main reason why the slower rate of fire would've helped is that it would've solved the issue of out of battery detonations. Again, it's impossible to know but I wish there was documentation as to how common it was for a German MG nest in the midst of battle to have a gun fire out of battery and thus render it inoperable. That would be fantastic information to know.
So, just some additional knowledge that most WW2 buffs probably already know anyway. This is really an awe-inspiring weapon. I wonder which weapon the german's preferred more though. The MG-34 or the MG-42. I've heard anecdotes that the soldiers really loved the MG-34. The MG-34 in my opinion was the perfect machine gun for it's time. It had fantastic milled steel construction(versus the stamped steel of the 42 to make it cheaper), it had an excellent rate of fire(upwards of 900rpm) and it was man-portable, able to be carried by one soldier easily. It could also fire in single shot mode because it had dual triggers. The MG-42 could not do this, it could only be bursted manually by the soldier, which they were trained to do obviously. The problem with the MG-34 was it was expensive and complex to produce, hence why Germany went to the easier to produce MG-42. But the MG-34 was widely recognized as the most advanced machine gun in the world when it was first issued to Germany's troops. A real Cadillac of a machine gun.

mein opa war mg-schütze an der ostfront, ab 1943 wo es nur noch zurück ging. der war schwer traumatisiert und hat meinem vater höchstens mal was erzählt, wenn er etwas getrunken hatte. der meinte, dass die russen teilweise unbewaffnete oder frauen zum sturmangriff geschickt haben, die er aus ein paar metern nieder mähnen musste, sonst wäre er selbst gestorben. der wachte sogar noch in den 80ern machnmal nachts auf und hatte das ulaaa von den russen im ohr.

What beautiful craftsmanship, lots of respect for German engineering. That and the Flak 88.
There are some great tools of home breakers out there, but I'd have to say the MG42 has to be one if my top ten. The minigun is a little much, the SAW is great, the M60 is overused.....I think the German STG.44 and Gewher 43 have to be my pics for the top five. I'd hope to have a collection some day.

In Italy during WW2, my late father had somehow to run between bursts of an MG-42 to get across a country lane. The German machine gunner was using tracer and dad and others had to time their leap across to safety.

The MG-42 was an awesome machine gun. It was called "Hitler's buzz saw" because of the sound it made. It could fire 1200 rounds per minute, and it came with an extra barrel so it can be changed when the barrel became too hot. I've seen some MG-42's for sale, and because it's a highly collectable weapon, they command premium prices!
