Our schedule changed a lot this school year because we wanted to prioritize outside time. Last year I was finding that my kids were lagging in the morning but this year I am waking them up 1/2 an hour earlier and letting them watch a show. So this year our schedule is 6:30-7- a show, 7-8- chores and breakfast, 8-9:30- outside nature study, 9:30-11- independent work, 11-12- family subject. Then we do an evening basket from 6-7pm.

I agree with waking up in the morning. It makes my whole day feel less chaotic and more productive.

Thanks for sharing, Abby! I’ve never scheduled time slots for subjects, but I may do that this year. For some reason, this year we have yet to find our groove/rhythm/whatever. We start by 9 most days, and I think that works for us, but we have all been rather grumpy this year. Maybe it was because Sept was an irregular month full of birthday parties and family visitors. Here’s to a good week, with more smiling than angst! Good luck to everyone!

Unit study is when you focus on one topic and then do all of the other discipline with it. For example: You want to study Outer Space. You will do the science behind it of course, copywork about space, read book about space and do comprehension and vocabulary on space. Learn about historical events tied with outer space. Does that make sense?

I love how you prioritize outside time! Thanks for sharing, it is so helpful to get ideas from how others set up their day. (Also yay for learning Spanish!) 🤗

My kids head out to the trampoline literally minutes after they wake up lol. I've started calling it their morning workout. I'd love to be "done by lunch" as so many people talk about, but that just doesn't seem to be the natural rhythm for my family. My kids need regular breaks to burn off some energy. The trick for me has been to figure out exactly when to call them back before they unravel and I can't get them to focus. #beenthere lol. First time homeschoolers over here and I am trying to embrace the process haha. Im part planner and part adventurer so basically one part of me is panicking at all times! lol

Love this. We might start doing something like this in November. My 4 yr old boys have been been going to a parents day out preschool 2 days a week but I'm pulling them out next month so we can get a head start on a good homeschool routine so maybe by kindergarten they will be able to sit for more than 5 mins lol. My kids wake up at 6:30am so I feel like starting school right away could be beneficial to us.

Wow. Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been homeschooling for nearly two years and have always started the day with bible and prayer. This week I have switched it to mid morning and have followed similar to what you have just described. I feel like I have found home. The days have flowed so much better. I love how real you are look forward to following your channel

Would you mind doing a impromptu video on your morning routine and how you start school by 8am? Your last morning routine video showed you starting school at 9am. Id love to start our school sooner but it feels like there are so many loose ends to tie up before we start.

This is our third year homeschooling and each year I've changed something. I have a prek/kindergartener, first, and fifth grader.
My fifth grader was getting bogged down with a lot of subjects, so I simplified his work to just math, reading, language arts, and copy work. He's usually done in an hour and a half and he loves it. It allows him to research and look into things he's interested in. Last week it was rogue waves 😊.
We'll probably add in science and history again next semester, but I'm probably going to add it to our family time.

The exact same thing happened to my 3rd grader. I noticed she was getting overwhelmed with all the extra subjects. We have cut out all the extras, and focus more on the absolute basics: Math, Reading, Writing, Language Arts. Now she has enough time to be outside! We are both enjoying the new scheduling. I say to all new homeschoolers, Relax. Take it easy on yourself and on your children. Spending time with your children is so important vs. having a mile long checklist of subjects that everyone else is doing. Just my personal thoughts & experience.

@@tamathaaviles3113 This is so great. I am preparing to formally start homeschool next summer and this is exactly what I'll be doing. Have a short morning with structured "need to learn" subjects and then explore their interests.

Tamatha Aviles - so glad you posted this! I am a “check all the boxes off” sort of mom. This year I have started to realize I can’t do it all! and my daughter is not enjoying learning or retaining it when she is frustrated with all the subjects. We get the basics done and if we have time - we do some fun science, art or history projects. I was feeling kind of guilty but glad to hear it’s the same for others!

I like to motivate my kids with rewards. If we get our schooling done, we can go to the library, or watch a movie, or cook/bake something together, or do an art project, etc. I’m shocked at how well it works for my kids.

I have started using some of the suggestions from Sherry Hayes (momdelights.com) for our language arts and I am amazed at how much easier and more effective her ideas are then the more time-consuming curricula we were using previously. She also has several videos here on TH-cam that are very helpful.

Okay so I hit the button too soon to post that comment. It should say as more children have joined our family. We've just finished our first six weeks and I am making changes to our schedule to try to adapt to the needs of all my kids, both school and non-school age. I know we will be changing again in the near future as we are expecting another baby at the beginning of November.

Tiffiney LAMAR I hope it’s okay to answer your question even though this is not my channel. But I ended up using the virtual school through the state. I STRUGGLED with so many other curriculums. (That’s why I can relate). I can’t speak Spanish so it was difficult to teach it, I got one on DVD and the curriculum was too baby and easy. It was just hard. The state had a full 5 + year curriculum, at your own pace, a teacher online and they actually called them. We’re in Florida and as homeschooler we can do the state’s virtual school as “flex”. There may be other virtual private / homeschool curriculums out there (I don’t have experience with any) but they always cost a lot. I hope this can help, and I hope I’m not stepping on any toes 😊❤️

I get a LOT of pushback from my friends oldest who is in 1st grade. He’s bright and does well at his school work. However it’s frustrating for both of us when I will show him our school schedule and say what’s up next and he’ll whine he doesn’t want to do it. Any suggestions?
Also, thank you for this video! I may be shifting our schedule for an earlier day so we can be done around lunch time.

This is my son, I use everything he loves as motivation. So I write down the things he loves. Soda at dinner time, screen time, ice cream and getting to stay up an extra 30 minutes. They start getting crossed off if he complains a lot and fights me on doing his work. He's really smart and he knows how to get his way because he's very determined. So I have to keep my will stronger then his or he would walk all over me. I gave more chances in the first week but then I started making it harder for him so he would give me more improvement. It's helped a lot and now he is working independently.
