Damn Bob Cousy even complimented him. Thats truly an honor. Cousy was truly an all time great player, forgotten by most it seems, but what an honor to have him compliment your game.
When Stockton and Karl Malone left the Utah Jazz, I was done with Basketball.(Its awful today).. Watching Stockton play the game ,(the way it should be played) It was enjoyable and a pleasure to watch.Stockton played 110 % every night. The players today should watch highlights of him and learn how to play the game, the right way. What a player and what a Class Act.I miss watching him and Karl play, I cann't believe its been 17 years ...
Gary Payton's comments was like the icing on the cake. The glove does not throw out too many compliments about other players. I read something many years ago about his training/running. Said something like in addition to practice and games that he ran like 5 miles a day everyday
Not a Jazz fan. But Stockton embodies class... From the way he played to the way that he lives his life. Classy guys like this are almost a dead breed in the NBA..
My childhood sports hero and I got to shake hands with him at church any number of times. After having watched Stockton and the Jazz taking on the Bulls in the NBA Finals so many years before, I couldn't believe it when I first was able to shake his hand at church. Great, humble guy. Though he definitely looks like he could rip you to shreds haha.
How can you not respect John Stockton? A man's man. Night in and night out competed with stronger faster and bigger players yet more times than not came out on top. He was able to compete on this level for 19 years. That is incredible. I feel blessed to have been able to grow up watching him play in the NBA. I can't imagine another point guard of his significance will come along in my lifetime. All hail John Stockton!!!!
Really wish Jerry Sloan and Stockton-to-Malone (1 word) would have won at least 1 ring. 2 of the greatest players of all time and 1 of the most underrated coaches of all time to never win one.
Great new interview here with John Stockton John discusses short shorts, the 97-98 season, dream team, his durability, toughness, karl malone, Coach Sloan, the missed shot vs. Bulls, Tim Donaghy scandal, explains his controversial vaccine stance, more th-cam.com/video/DAKIsvcnGLQ/w-d-xo.html
When you consider what Magic did in those 12 seasons and consider the numbers he would have stacked up had he played longer, then it gives you an idea of how great he was. Its important to acknowledge that Magic retired early and still had a lot of basketball left in him, so the history books would look a lot different as far as his total of assists are concerned. Nobody can deny that Stockton is one of the two greatest point guards in NBA history alongside Magic.
Stockton was neither buff, big or build, but if you where on his team, he would find you with a pass. For many years there where 1-2-punch. Stockton to Malone It's a real beaty that Karl Malone and John Stockton in real life are so good friends.
Basketball have changed...nobody will get even close to his assists number. I like to watch Tony parker nowadays....but i think its a different kind of game, once he does not passes like Stockton did. Nash got closer, but he had not a good scorer like Karl Malone to use the Stockton's talent at the maximum. Best duo EVER!
When I was a child in Ukraine back in 1995 he has been one of my favorite basketball player. Does anyone know where Stockton is currently residing, whether in Spokane or another city in the US? Is it possible to meet him at a conference or any other location to get his autograph?
Another great point guard who often is not mentioned among the greats is Kevin Johnson, but he had a great stretch in the early '90s. An interesting thing about the assist statistic is that if a player makes a pass who is then fouled, and that player goes to the line and hits 2 free throws, the guy who made the pass does not get an assist. Yet, his pass effectively resulted in 2 points. And when I think of Stockton, I can't help but think how many assists he lost passing the ball to Ostertag.
5:00 , but 5:09 where it starts, the way he reads the guy trying to pass to Pippen who is posting Stockton up, Stockton stutter steps to the right, then back, then back to the right again and steals the ball from PIPPEN, long arms and 6'7, amazing hustle.
Man, for someone like the great Steve Nash to actually come out and say that John Stockton is the greatest NBA point guard who ever played...that means something. Especially with the type of reputation and stature held by Steve as a player. Now of course I don't know how many people would agree with that statement, because their have definitely been some amazing point guards who've played in the NBA, of whom a handful have been in recent years. But I still think Stockton probably holds the title in that category considering the fact that he still holds the record for most career assists and steals by a longshot, along with him and Karl Malone being the best duo in NBA history!
Haha, Kenny Smith is right. Stockton looks like an insurance salesman. When he and Hornacek teamed up there were two of them :) !! Unbelievable how good he is.
How? Stockton had 10 seasons as good or better than Nash's two MVPs. I absolutely love Steve Nash too, It's not a knock on him to say he's not as good as the GOAT.
You gotta love John Stockton. He looks just like a regular, normal, unassuming guy that works in an office? He didn't have an atheltic or powering physique and can sadly be one of those players that's easily overlooked in terms of basketball skill in a game dominated by black guys. But he's one of the top 50 NBA players of all time and a tenacious, determined, hard working and skilled ball player. It's such a shame he couldn't get a ring, him and Malone really deserved one?
I've never seen a more effective player in almost 30 years of being an NBA fan. Everything that Stockton did was just basic fundamentals with no flash. Stockton wasn't incredibly fast and had only average athleticism, but managed to accomplish so much with hard work and intelligence. Not to mention that he only used one half of the court to do it with. Seriously, Stockton only went to his right for the entirety of his career. Miraculously scouts missed this fact about Stockton and teams never shaded him to his left. It's like Stockton flew under their radar and just killed teams quietly.
everybody says mj , i always say this guy , small between monsters and fucking them up. this is the top dog. and always low profile. the guy has character on and off the court
+Camden Jester it was neither of those two things that screwed the Jazz. It was Howard Eisleys 3 late in the game that was clearly good on reply but waived off. They didnt review back then. And also late was Pippens 3 that was very late and counted yet replay shows it wasnt even close to beating the shot clock, but as I said no reply to overturn back then. Thats a six point swing. Not saying the Jazz win the title, but a game 7 should have happend but didnt. Jazz got screwed. I would love to have seen a game 7 at Jazz, too bad. I think that Jazz team is better than a few teams over the years that did win it. Easily.
I know. I agree that whole series was poorly officiated. I think that's a big example cause they WON with that shot. That Jazz team was awesome and I agree mark brinton
edmund wong MJ was 6 for 6. the NBA is rigged in favor of LeBron now. it was not rigged back then. just more competitive. and Russell was off balance and he baraley touched him. quit with the excuses. the jazz were great. just played at the wrong time. lol
he and gary payton are the most underrated players of the 90s. point guards almost never get enough love. they are the manipulators of the game; they use every movement, every decision to change the course of action in a way that benefits their team. the floor generals, and he and payton were two of the best of them. stockton's probably better though, by an inch
Jimmy Joe...and that's a good thing because......why? Marriage is an antiquated union at best, it's for inbreds and retards who can't get more than one woman....
Some people think Karl Malone made John Stockton great. They need to be corrected. There are five major career stat categories. Points. Assists. Rebounds. Blocks. Steals. John Stockton is the only player who is the career leader in two of those 5 categories: He is the Career leader in assists at 15,806, 23% more than #2 Jason Kidd. And Stockton is the career leader in Steals 3,265 career steals, 17% more than #2 Jason Kid. He never stole the ball from Karl Malone.
Top 4 point guards of all time in no particular order : Cousy, Magic, Stockton, Oscar. The fifth position is more of a challenge. In the running : Isiah, Nash, Payton, Kidd, Frazier. I have left Jerry West off the list because he is considered a shooting guard.
8:44 the epitome of life itself, “don’t be a baby, don’t raise ur kids to be babies” well what the heck happened to ANY PEOPLE LIKE THE STOCKTONs? Hell what happened to the people, u all jus a bunch of insecure babies now, tis very very sad? John Stockton the Gonzaga OG, mucho corazon king ❤️💛💚 great video, amazing player, super human being 💚💛❤️
9:00 nothing pisses of a kid like their parents telling them that the bigger kids are too tough for them. I'm guessing this set the foundation for John's tough play and gritty attitude on the court.
I really don't like how they keep saying he doesn't look like a basketball player. I think we all understand what that means. What if there was an amazing black hockey player or NASCAR driver? Would white people say, he doesn't look like a hockey player? Nope. And I think you know why. They are right...he doesn't look like a basketball player. And we will be saying the same things about Steve Nash when he finally hangs it up. It's a damn shame.
also magic is more of a forward in my opinion and not really a true pure point guard. Stockton is THE model point guard in the NBA. magic was good at everything so you can't really call him a pure point guard.
@dannysoya Magic was a true point guard in every sense of the word he was the all time assists leader when he retired and might still be had he never retired early at the age of 31... also just because he had the ability to play multiple positions doesnt mean he wasnt a true point guard.. he was just blessed with height and versatility.. chris paul maybe the best PG(Though i think its Deron Williams) in todays game is good at basically everything but he is also a true PG
Funny how magic is the best and the argue net always comes to rings.....but magic always had the more talented team, Stockton had Malone, and the occasional filler player. Stockton is the best PURE point guard ever, and overall I'd say it's a coin flip over the two.
So if u look at PERSONAL records...John Stockton is the best player in the history of the NBA, I mean it's not even close ....he holds multiple records, but there r 5 major stats...Stockton has 2 of them steals and assists...that's unreal...also Jordan should have been 4/6.... The 2 years in the finals, Jazz were the better team....if u go look at the games, it's obvious that the refs gave the title to the Bulls, this is not some crazy conspiracy theory, it's basically known at this point..,The NBA, was making more money off of Jordan being a Dynasty then any sport in the history of sports, THEY STILL ARE MAKING A FORTUNE FROM JORDAN....so when u watch the games close, if it's a blowout, the refs can't do anything, but if it's close, and the Bulls were a great team, just not as good as Jazz, u see the calls where they handed it to them, it just takes a few calls here on there, when it's going to be a game decided with less than 10 points...I saw the games, live in both Utah, and flew to Chicago, even in the Chicago paper, they said thanks to the refs...there was a buzzer beater that when u review, was not even close, given to Bulls, the SAME GAME, a buzzer beater from Jazz was good, and was waved off..,that's a 6 point swing, and Jazz lost by 5... Jordan famously pushed off Byron Russel, to win...when u understand how the league makes money, and that Jordan winning, would and still makes the BILLIONS...u understand..also if u watch the games, it's broken down where they cheated them, ALSO several NBA refs, have come forward, AND TOLD how they were told and taught to cheat for teams...it's a fact...Their individual numbers r not even close, Stockton vs Jordan...not even near the same level....
Eric S Well, I never said that it outright COSTED them a championship. But it did cost them a POTENTIAL championship, or the chance for one, if you will. The other thing though is that there were dumb calls in the other Games of the series as well, which could very well be credited to as the reason why the Jazz were even down 3-1 in the first place (with the exception of Game 3. The Jazz were just ass in that game).
Eric S That could very well be true. Now a days, point guards are just shooting threes a lot (#StephCurry). The only point guard I know of that is close to even being CONSIDERED a point guard like Stockton is Chris Paul.
Averaged a double-double for his career, shot over 51% from the field, and never missed the playoffs. This is over 19 seasons. Incredible.
He also almost never missed a game, and is the NBA leader in assists AND steals. Damn...
Tim Duncan is in the same category...literally.
Yet people still refuse to accept him as one of the greatest players of all time.
Damn Bob Cousy even complimented him. Thats truly an honor. Cousy was truly an all time great player, forgotten by most it seems, but what an honor to have him compliment your game.

When Stockton talks about his parents you can see how his eyes are shinning. So beautiful.
You kind of know how the good men are (not just athletes) when they talk about their parents with reverence and respect.
@@robertopics I agree with you, but some parents are horrible and shouldn't get any respect.
Respect STOCK form Turkey. My childhood hero. Beste PG Ever!! Pure PG!!
My favorite player of all time. I lived in Utah at that time and saw John and Karl play many times.
Gary Payton's comments was like the icing on the cake. The glove does not throw out too many compliments about other players. I read something many years ago about his training/running. Said something like in addition to practice and games that he ran like 5 miles a day everyday
You dont need like in your fucking sentence
He didn’t remember the exact amount. I would rather see that’s it’s around there then someone falsely saying an exact number. Slap yourself
I miss that NBA era SO SO SO MUCH :(:(:(
Im glad I'm not the only one.
Amen brother
I used to watch the nba during this era. I loved the Jazz. Hard nosed play. Great team work. Seems like alot of that was lost.
Not a Jazz fan. But Stockton embodies class... From the way he played to the way that he lives his life. Classy guys like this are almost a dead breed in the NBA..
Bulls fan, hated Stockton. Cause he was so damn good.

Thanks to whoever posted this.. I love the Lakers but John Stockton is my greatest Point Guard EVER. even ahead of Magic. He's so special.
This guy was my hero growing up. I appreciate you sharing this. Best PG of all time. These kids just don't know. He took Magic to school.

me and my buddy used to pretend to be Stockton and Malone...and we were HUGE Bulls fans in the 90s. That's how influential this duo was.
Stockton was neither buff, big or build, but if you where on his team, he would find you with a pass. For many years there where 1-2-punch. Stockton to Malone
It's a real beaty that Karl Malone and John Stockton in real life are so good friends.

Basketball John. #1 All-time NBA leader in points attributed (points scored + 2 points per assist). Unbeatable assists and steals records.
My all times favorite basketball player, simplemente el mejor point guard de la historia.
"Stockton to Malone" assist and score!!!!
All-Time , 19years of being the Best PG.
don't get it twisted though!! this guy was the rip Hamilton of the 80s and 90s. always in impeccable shape and could play infinite minutes!!
5:00 , but 5:09 where it starts, the way he reads the guy trying to pass to Pippen who is posting Stockton up, Stockton stutter steps to the right, then back, then back to the right again and steals the ball from PIPPEN, long arms and 6'7, amazing hustle.

+Adam L thanks
+Adam L thanks
Adam L kobe and shaq were a better duo
the first minute gives me chills
he's a legend
maraming salamat john stockton at mabuhay para sa hari nang steals at assist
Haha, Kenny Smith is right. Stockton looks like an insurance salesman. When he and Hornacek teamed up there were two of them :) !! Unbelievable how good he is.
had great vision for the court like no one else. if only he could also score 30 points a game he would have some rings on his fingers.
The pass at 3:48 is just plain nasty
Indeed
ROBIN = JOHN STOCKTON HE WAS A SUPERSTAR , STILL HIS NAME IS ALIVE , HE IS THE BEST GUARD OF THE UNIVERSE
Braveheart soundtrack really completes the video.
Made the comments before I watched the clip, but pretty sure Nash and Kenny the jet called Stockton the best of all time
How? Stockton had 10 seasons as good or better than Nash's two MVPs. I absolutely love Steve Nash too, It's not a knock on him to say he's not as good as the GOAT.
Gon-Zag-A , 509 Legend!!!!
Honestly, I'm shocked he didn't lead the league in assists every year of his career!!! Who the hell beat him some of those?!!
I always get teary eyed when I see these videos John and Karl
You gotta love John Stockton.
He looks just like a regular, normal, unassuming guy that works in an office? He didn't have an atheltic or powering physique and can sadly be one of those players that's easily overlooked in terms of basketball skill in a game dominated by black guys.
But he's one of the top 50 NBA players of all time and a tenacious, determined, hard working and skilled ball player.

Stockton is THE play
Most Underrated
@dannysoya why do you have him ahead of magic??? just wondering...
I've never seen a more effective player in almost 30 years of being an NBA fan. Everything that Stockton did was just basic fundamentals with no flash. Guy was unreal.....he made so many bums look like they could play...
#1 PG of all time
I'm still looking for a Dream Team game where Stockton and MJ are in the court together.
lol they added the music from Gladiator as background music for this video. I think it's the piece titled "Now We Are Free"
everybody says mj , i always say this guy , small between monsters and fucking them up. this is the top dog. and always low profile. the guy has character on and off the court
+Laz N I honestly believe that the Jazz was robbed of championship. The series against Bulls was rigged because MJ is a million times more marketable.
+enrique lanza but that push on the Russell.
+Camden Jester it was neither of those two things that screwed the Jazz. It was Howard Eisleys 3 late in the game that was clearly good on reply but waived off. They didnt review back then. the first two minutes was a song jacked from braveheart
Thank you for posting this video series jazzgyrl. Great stuff!
awesome they have the soundtrack from Glory
The GOAT
he and gary payton are the most underrated players of the 90s. point guards almost never get enough love. they are the manipulators of the game; they use every movement, every decision to change the course of action in a way that benefits their team. the floor generals, and he and payton were two of the best of them. stockton's probably better though, by an inch
Stockton is the REAl magic.
What a king of steak and assist
On longetivity you can't argue against Stockton, but Magic before his first retirement was the greatest point guard I've ever seen.
That music is from Braveheart not Gladiator.
Stockton was great. lets go bucks.
The one thing for sure Stockton is better than Jordan at is being a family man!
No we don't know that
We kinda do. MJ had multiple women.. right now hes with some little blondie barbie.
Stockton has had one wife.
atleast both are better than karl malone at that
Jimmy Joe...and that's a good thing because......why? Marriage is an antiquated union at best, it's for inbreds and retards who can't get more than one woman....
Branon Fontaine nah, it’s for men who can actually keep a woman
The pass at 3:49 made me say OMG out loud.
He is Great
Damn, even Jordan knew this guy was for real. That's saying something...
the quintessential pure point guard
Im agreeing with the fact that Stockton is the best PG to play the game.
If Magic never existed, Stockton is, by far, the greatest point guard to ever play. But 8" is 8" and no amount of skill makes you taller.
i agree. plus with all the layups malone missed or got fouled on, john would have over 20,000 assists, easily.
This is when I like to say that Magic was the better over-all player, but Stockton was the better PG. In my opinion, of course.
Stockton Jordan pippen rasheed wallace shaq my starting 5
did anyone see the Dublin Ireland
registration plate in his dads tavern
song at 5:46? heard it in garden state but it wasn't on the soundtrack. i think it might be simon & garfunkel
bookends
i love you
lol no problem

room service passes ahahahaahahaha

yes he took charges all the time :)

Bryan Joseph I am a Jazz fan, and while I am not so sure about 1997, there definitely was some stuff going on in 1998.
Eric S A Game 7 is not an argument for Stockton not being better. We don't know who would have won Game 7.

Eric S That could very well be true. Now a days, point guards are just shooting threes a lot (#StephCurry). The only point guard I know of that is close to even being CONSIDERED a point guard like Stockton is Chris Paul.
those assists and steals wont be beaten easily
@shaq430 saw him play a lot more than magic.
I wish I saw him play. Honestly nobody will pass his assist record. No one. Not even Rondo and he's like the black John Stockton.
Two words .. Mike D'antoni or however it's spelled. Steve Nash is not a top 5 point guard
Don't judge a book by its cover...
