Just shaking my head in amazement. Can't believe I almost took John Stockton for granted, watching all those games on TV during the 80's, 90's and into even the 2000's.
I love seeing the complete minimalism of style in his game, it's like a machine--every motion has a purpose and he finds the shortest, simplest way to achieve it. You watch this and wonder how one second he's dribbling the ball and the next it's in a guys hands under the basket... I don't blame the defenders--I'm ball-watching too even though I know the pass is coming.
What's incredible is the lack of a transition between dribble and pass. It's so deadly, the pass could leave his hand after literally any dribble, it's so unpredictable.

Also, observe how he always keeps his head straight up while dribbling so he sees everything. The sight is the key to choose to whom and when pass the ball.
80's was a tough era MVP wise. Bird, Magic, Jordan. Happy John was a "dream teamer" Also HOF and all time assist leader. He's respected as a great 2 those who know.

The density of good players was much higher in the 80s until the mid-90s. If a young Stockton would play in 2005 in the NBA then he had dominated the league.

This man was, is & always the very definition of a Point Guard. Yes, there are amazing players & guards in today’s game, however, there is no one like Stockton. Delivering the dime was his priority and he was the best at it, shooting the ball was his very last option & let’s not forget that he was also very good at shooting, & deadly for anyone the split second they weren’t paying attention he’d pop out of no where & be headed the other way with the ball before they knew they got picked.
Some just didn't get it. What makes Stockton unique isn't his ability to pass off the drible or stuff like that, isn't HOW, but WHERE. Nobody has or ever had such ability to set up plays, time after time, from halfcourt. Everything looks simple, easy, even sloppy sometimes, due to Stockton's ability to put the ball exactly where it should be. Those who claim X or Y today do the same didn't see Stockton at his best at all, or didn't understand the core of his game. I have seen at least 13 from Stockton 19 years professional basketball career. He was a beast. Pass like no one else with Magic and Big O as exception. Isiah was a better player but as a pure point guard Stockton was the smartest and lets not even bring his defense skills. Today`s PGs really should learn from him.

I have about 80 games of Utah Jazz, 20 of them against Chicago (all Finals) and MJ never guarded John unless one or another specific play. He guarded Russ or Jeff. I saw him at the tail end of his career along with Malone. All I recall was Malone being a beast in posting up. I was too busy with life to watch BB for the prior 20 years. Now I'm seeing the skill and effort by a non-big man that's incomparable. Rodman had effort to make him great as a defender and rebounder and surprisingly even without making many points proved so useful. Stockman brings something else to the table and helps the team even more.
I am Mexican-American and emulate this guys game on the neighborhood court. I even made a makeshift shirt and with a permanent marker wrote on the back STOCKTON 12. Young players don't know him and don't care about assists. I school them with many assists. I love seeing their frustration when I give up the ball for an easy assist and basket. I have won many games in the hood because of my assists. But they will never notice in the hood that assists still wins game too. I know that for the most part it was the fundamental assist that won those games. Assists are just one part of the fundamentals next to rebounds, defense, block outs, mid range shot and aggressive play. All lost now for the stupid 3pointer. Also, we need more Mexican-American players in the NBA .Many of us could play and assist just as good as Stockton, Nash, Paul but we get passed by for the white or black player with same skills. I have seen it happen to high school kids and middle school kids they just get bypassed with a bad perception that a black or white player play better. Had they acquired a center like Rony Seikaly I think they may have been able to win the Bulls who were without a strong center themselves.

Stockton only threw maybe 1/3 of his assists to Malone (which is still a ton), but Stockton made scrubs like Ostertag, Keefe, Foster, etc help him and Malone to the finals. So, I don't think Stockton made Malone, just maximized.

What bugs me sometimes is when some people say Stockton has his records due to longevity of his career. He passed the number two on the list pretty early and fast in his career. The longevity only contributed to how far ahead he ended up being. When he passed Magic Johnson, his assists per game was higher than Magic's. Plus, longevity of career is a positive, impressive thing, not a negative.
He didn't NEED more tricks. And by the way, he became all the all-time leader in assists in LESS games than Magic Johnson did, and that's after being a bench player for the first 3 years. THE greatest assisting point guards of all time, dominated the assist charts for about a decade, with over 1000 assists for most seasons. we don't see 900 assists per season too often, and he is making 1000 assists per season
His passes worked the way they did because he threw the ball so fast. Defenders couldn't deflect it even though the ball would travel right past their arms. In John's book he praised Karl for being able to catch the ball no matter how hard he threw it.
Stockton was like the Lionel Messi of Basketball. His passing was like Messi's dribbling in Soccer. Just magical and unbelievable how both of them find ways to score.
Stockton would've excelled in the D'Antonio and Gentry system. Nash's assists consisted of setting up 15-24 foot jumpers, where as most of Stockton's assists were guys in the paint.
Consistency is the key as well as accuracy. Besides Malone, he didn't have another finisher to give it to. So he always had to thread it to guys like Mark Eaton who wouldn't be able to get any scores unless they were given the ball at the right position and time.

What bugs me sometimes is when some people say Stockton has his records due to longevity of his career. He passed the number two on the list pretty early and fast in his career. The longevity only contributed to how far ahead he ended up being. When he passed Magic Johnson, his assists per game was higher than Magic's. Plus, longevity of career is a positive, impressive thing, not a negative.

Stockton is amazing. Without a doubt he is a top 3 pg and possibly the best.
He didn't NEED more tricks. And by the way, he became all the all-time leader in assists in LESS games than Magic Johnson did, and that's after being a bench player for the first 3 years. The fact that you think it's solely because he played a lot shows you never really watched him. Best passer ever. Period.

What I like about Stockon is he kept it simple.
Damn I miss watching this guy play live. Wiz a basketball an inch past your ear like a bullet off the dribble. Always got to watch slo-mo replays of that shit back in the day on local broadcasts. I'm sure it's quite different for the defender in real speed. Be standin there thinkin ...."ok...I got this guy covered". All of a sudden.....ZIP! You feel the breeze of the ball flying by your head and Malone has dunked 2 points plus a foul behind you.

If you want flash and showmanship, Magic is your man, but if you want clean, crisp, bear-bottom passing skills then Stockton is the way to go.

His passes worked the way they did because he threw the ball so fast. Defenders couldn't deflect it even though the ball would travel right past their arms. In John's book he praised Karl for being able to catch the ball no matter how hard he threw it.
Stockton was like the Lionel Messi of Basketball. His passing was like Messi's dribbling in Soccer. Just magical and unbelievable how both of them find ways to score.

Stockton would've excelled in the D'Antonio and Gentry system. Nash's assists consisted of setting up 15-24 foot jumpers, where as most of Stockton's assists were guys in the paint.

Consistency is the key as well as accuracy. Besides Malone, he didn't have another finisher to give it to. So he always had to thread it to guys like Mark Eaton who wouldn't be able to get any scores unless they were given the ball at the right position and time.
