So - why didn't Aristotle, with all his intellectual genius, think more critically about things like slavery and gender inequality? He was clearly a product of his time, but you'd expect such a renowned philosopher to be more progressive in his views. Let me see if I can break down some thoughts on this: I mean, Aristotle was without a doubt one of the greatest thinkers in human history. His mind was on a different level. But societal norms and personal biases can be blind spots, even for brilliant philosophers. Aristotle just accepted practices like slavery and inferior treatment of women as normal - that was the culture he grew up in. But that line of thinking simply wasn't on his philosophical agenda. Dude was more interested in tackling things like logic, politics, and the nature of knowledge. Examining his own social privilege was probably nowhere near his priorities. And while Aristotle was a genius, he was still just a man of his era. Realistically, even if he did have a moral awakening about slavery or women's equality, Aristotle probably would have kept his mouth shut. He benefitted from those systems, and actively opposing them could have jeopardized his own status. Dude was smart, but he also knew which side his bread was buttered on. So in summary - Aristotle was an all-time intellectual giant, but limited by the mores of his era. He didn't focus his talents on social change or empathize beyond his own experience. And he certainly took advantage of some cruel institutions that we rightfully condemn today. I guess you could say he was an imperfect philosopher constrained by his context. But he still moved the needle of human thought, even if it took centuries more for moral philosophers to address the glaring issues he ignored. The evolution of ideas takes time. Aristotle got some key things rolling, even if he fell short on others.
