      Hello to you in Ukraine! As boaters, we value the ability to go cruising in our boats. I feel in the Pacific Northwest (and many places); we sometimes may take these opportunities for granted. We never should! Your comment reminds me of this.
      Being out on the water is far from being a necessary part of life however it feeds the soul and mind. Some of our most enjoyable moments are spent there.
      I wish the best for you and Ukraine and hope you all get through the war as soon as possible.
      Thank you so much for commenting, it is great to hear from you; and from the heart - please take care!!

    It's a great tour. Looks nice and sunny there. We just got 1ft of snow. Really nice you have a freezer on board. We are still freezing blocks of ice
    James also redid our upholstery on our boat

      Hi There. We filmed the boat tour back on Oct 30, there hasn't been much sunny weather like that this fall! The deep freeze is well worth it, It uses very little power. Canvas and upholstery work is great to be able to do yourself, saves you from having to source the trades and saves a few bucks too... Thanks for the comment!!

    Thank you for the boat tour! I just found your channel after searching for "Gulf Island anchorages." We own a 4087 (located in Seattle) and this video have me so many ideas about storage! To start, cutlery is definitely coming out of the drawer!

      Hi Laura
      Nice to hear you found our channel! The 4087 is a great layout, certainly given the extra space where the 3587 falls a bit short.
      Moving the cutlery is an easy win. I would like to focus in on a number of other tweaks we have done to our boat, most 3587/4087 owners may benefit from that. Stay tuned!!
      Thank you for watching, subscribing and the comment. It really is appreciated!!

    Great video!
    We have a 1996 Bayliner 3587.
    We live and have our boat in Vancouver BC.
    I’m planning on doing some modifications to our boat. Looking forward to watching more of your videos and perhaps asking you some questions.

      Also do you have any information on access to removing and replacing trim tabs on a 3587?

    Thanks for the tour - I just found it! I own a '95 3587 and am liveaboard in PDX on the Columbia River. Good idea to remove the vac for more storage under the settee! I use a cordless Dyson anyway (and have a small shop vac too). Also, great idea on installing shelf above hanging rod in forward closet! Most exciting is that I didn't know about the headboard storage in the midship cabin! I immediately moved my dog crates to confirm :) One question: Is your forward head a self macerating conversion. Interested in recommendations if you converted from the standard plunger style (mine is the Jabsco). Thanks again and happy to share pics of my Bayliner as well!

      @MVMakenaKai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gena
      Glad you enjoyed the tour!
      One other storage place to make use of; behind the seat back of the couch seating in the main salon.
      It is an unfinished space but is a great spot to store tools and spares.
      Bayliner secured these seat backs by sinking some screws through the tops edges of the cushion backs.
      If you dig around a bit you should be able to back the screws out and then pull the seat backs up and out.
      There is a nice gap that drops right to the floor in behind. Above the airbox/below the gunwale is a nice spot to put containers of spare parts. These seat back do not need to be secured and it is a great storage location.
      We did convert a jabsco manual head to a macerating head. It worked okay, pretty noisey and it was getting kind of old. I recently pulled it and bought a new jabsco manual head. Sometimes simple and quiet is good...
      Thank you for commenting and for watching!

    Best tour of this model on the Tube.
    With the cockpit being at that kind of split level height are you folks able to fish much from this boat?

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! Fishing is possible but certainly not ideal. The Bayliner 4087 would be much better. If you had a 3587 without the hardtop it might be okay. At least then when you try to land the fish, the aft roof supports won't be in the way. Thank you for watching!!

    Very nice review. Glad to see families nurturing their kids. Boating can keep the family close which is so important during these times. You have the good engines. At 3400 RPM how many gallons of fuel do you use ? I have a Bayliner 2858 single engine 454 large lock. She is a gas hog but solid engine. She burns about 20 gallons per hour at 3400 RPM. Looking to trade up at some point. Looking at Bayliner and Mainship 34’ with single 370 HP Yanmar engine. In the Mainship loads of room to service the engines. They come with bow and stern thrusters. Mainly a couple boat. Your boat great with three staterooms.

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charles
      Thanks!! Overall, the boating lifestyle has served us well as a family.
      Regarding fuel economy, we have twin diesels. Diesels are quite different regarding power output, torque curves and generally much lower RPMs that gas engines. More specifically, our twin 5.8 L Hino 6 cylinder diesels are governed to a maximum RPMs of 3100. 3400 RPMs is unattainable.
      Our 3587 is loaded up pretty heavily so I don't even bother trying to get it up on plane; the 3587 could benefit from a longer hull for more planing surface. As a result, we are satisfied with running at easy 8.5 knots most of the time consuming about 3.5 - 4 US gallons per hour.
      The layout of the 3587 has been great for our needs so far, might change as time goes on but we'll see.
      As with most boats, a usable layout is nearly the most important aspect. Our engine compartment is challenging.
      The mainship 34 is a nice boat!
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    can you tell me the fuel consumption for both engines and approx cruising speed and top speed. Thanks for the terrific video coverage.

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have no idea of fuel consumption at top speed; we never travel at top speed. At typical speeds (average 8-9 knots) we're at roughly 4 US gallons/hr (15 litres/hr).
      I have played around a bit with running on one engine going slow on calm days and riding a tide. In the right conditions you can really lower the fuel burn per mile.
      Thanks for watching, really have to finish some edits on some new content.

    Great video. Thank you. We just bought a 4087 last summer, which has the same layout as yours. I was particularly interested in the box behind your flybridge seat. I've been looking at pictures of that area on our boat and thinking "I wish there was something I could do with that". (Boat is tucked up for the winter, so looking at pictures is all I can do right now.) I like how your wooden box is high enough that the door beneath it can still slide across. How is the box suspended/attached?

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!! The 4087 is a great boat, there's two of them within 100 feet of our boat on the same dock.
      The box behind the flybridge seat is great, highly recommend building one. So it is supported at the center with a few vertical pieces in the center resting on the flat area above the galley. The leading edge (near the flybridge seat) is attached to secure it from moving. It also has a hanger in the back corner attached to the aft roof. I'll include a few details on this in a future Q&A in the next video or so. Please stay tuned and thank you for watching/commenting.

    Would you still recommend after having it a couple of years? One came up for sale in my area with the Cummins engines very tempted to go look at it, anything I should be on the look out? Thanks in advance

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Alex
      Yeah, the 3587 is a great boat and I do still feel that way. Of course, one of the most important things is that the layout fits your needs. No boat is perfect for everything, it just has to meet the most important items on your list. Here are some of the good and not so good things I might suggest for consideration.
      The good:
      -Great for several private sleeping areas
      -Great overall feature list for the boat's size
      -Dedicated shower,
      -Two heads (totally independent including holding tanks). might save a trip.
      -Fits within a 40' slip
      -Great design for PWN weather,
      -Great command bridge layout.
      -Comfortable steps to command bridge (no ladder).
      -Good solar mounting options
      -Range with oven
      -Large fridge/freezer
      The not so good:
      -Engine maintenance is cramped (you can still get everywhere you need to).
      -No aft-low cockpit deck (perhaps better for socializing at docks and raft-ups) but typical for aft-cabin boat.
      -Lower helm not the greatest for driving (this is true on any sedan bridge).
      -A lot of steps overall throughout the boat.
      Final thoughts:
      Do your surveys. Be sure to give particular attention to the mechanical surveys on the cummins engines (especially the raw water after coolers!). The 6BTA engine needs regular maintenance to the after coolers. I believe they need service every 2 years maximum.
      Wish you the best of luck in you buy.
      Cheers!
      Matt

    you didn’t accidentally make that closet out of oak first, did you?

      Awesome work! and boat Matt! I should’ve gave, at least a small hint, that I was referencing the movie “Overboard” where Kurt Russell rebuilt a closet out of oak, but was asked to redo it because of a concern for moths lol.
      Again, amazing boat and thanks for the tour! I hope to get one someday.

    Another question: The boxes you keep your cutlery/silverware in...where would I find something like that? How do you keep it from falling over when you travel? Do you have it attached somehow?

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brenda
      Those boxes are actually sold as toothbrush holders at Ikea: www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/dragan-toothbrush-holder-30271491/
      We bought 6 of them and glued them together with epoxy (or some other glue anything glue).
      On the 3587 or 4087 the gap on that ledge is a perfect snug fit. In 5+ years or so since we put them there they have never flew across the salon in rough seas.
      Thanks for the question
      Matt

      Hi Maurice.
      In Washington state there is a place that it is said has original quality boat top/enclosure templates (letastopshop.com/).
      Whether it is true, not sure. I have heard this option may exist.
      Other options, hire a boat top professional to make one. This can be difficult to find a good canvas person at a reasonable rate without waiting 6-9 months...
      The last option; tool up with an industrial walking foot sewing machine (sailrite ultrafeed or knock off like a Rex 607), kit up with snaps and sunbrella and build one. Might sound far fetched but depending on circumstance it can be an option but certainly is not for everyone.
      While I didn't build my enclosures from scratch, I have rebuilt the back and upper enclosures on our boat (replaced all zippers and clear vinyl). I will be creating some videos around this subject on our TH-cam channel eventually.
      Even if you don't build enclosures from scratch, the availability to do you own repairs is huge!
