The kids start eating the grain that I feed the does at about three weeks old. I set up the creep feeder once they are about a month old. I then slowly increase the protein percentage from 14% to a 18%. They will be on the creep feeder until they are weaned. Then I just feed them in the tough because they are not having to fight the larger goats for the feed.
I try not to exceed more than 5 goats per acre. I have my pastures divided into several sections. A section might be an acre with 30 goats on it but they will only be there for 2 or 3 weeks before they are moved to another section. One mature male should be able to breed between 30 to 50 females in a breeding season with no problem. The dog food feeder has a lid on the top and a door that the goats push on to get to the feed. Typically that is enough to keep the moisture out. Also I only fill it enough for one day so that there is not excess feed sitting inside to draw in moisture.
