3:39 - meant to say "regiment" not squadron
5:46 - I am told the artillery observation variant of the AMX-10P is no longer in service. When it was I believe it was only in the 40th Artillery Rgt, which is an SPG regiment, and the 1st Artillery which is a divisional MLRS regiment.

It's not about the numbers, it's about quality. From company structure to hardware, France have an understestimated (by the public) military power. What people fail to understand is that France army is not built to secure its territory or invade a country, it's an expedition force. It's built to project its power anywhere in the world at a fast pace with punch. That's why they maintain bases all around the world. French soldiers are recruited and trained like professionnals, not like meat. For its defense, France has one of the strongest and advanced nuclear capabilities.

It seems beautiful, but France not having a force capable of invading/destroy a neighbour is unacceptable regarding her History and "Allies".
Eternal peace is an extremely dangerous way of thinking, especially when surrounded by "friends" who wait the good opportunity to backstab (UK) or a husband who invaded your country 3 times within less than 70 years (Germany)

The EU is falling apart and it's evident that the stronger members like France and Germany are increasingly strangled by the dependency of insolvent nations like Greece. To boot, it's bloated with anti-democratic bureaucracies who represent a threat to the very principles upon which it was founded, hence the departure of the UK and the resistance of Hungary and Poland, who're the only ones blunt enough to call it out on its horrendous immigration and Brussels-monocultural impositions.
It was great on paper but, it's evident that it sucks in practice.

They have a bit of everything but they don't have it all. Their artillery is severely lacking (they make and have high quality equipment but the numbers are not what they should be (16 howitzers and 12 heavy mortars to equip their gigantic brigades), air defence might as well not exist since it's mostly truck mounted MANPADS and unable to follow forces on the offensive, some of their components keep complaining of the absence of heavy lift helicopters and their logistics might be lacking for full on deployments.
There's quite a few things I like with their stuff (their approach to the armoured platoon is great for example) but there is also a whole lot of issues. Ironically, some of it may stem from an overly large infantry (and to an extent cavalry) component as a consequence of decades of counter insurgency operations.

The French have superb land, sea and air forces and furthermore all their state of the art hardware and equipment is made in France: hi-tech aircraft, warships, tanks, artillery and nuclear submarines. France is a very formidable military power, a fact which tends to be ignored in Anglo-Saxon countries which seem to believe that because France (and the UK) were defeated (and France occupied) by the Nazis in 1940, the French are weak. After the USA, France may well have the most powerful and skilful military in the Western world.

France still has the record of victories in her history (google "country with most victories")
The problem with France, is the defense budget, it's politic... The military industry is the best after the US, but the money she puts on the table has decreased since a few years because she has the nuclear power and also because she is member of NATO ...
Since 2 years they decided to reverse this and invest more but it's still not enough.

    Great video, as always!
Two things I'd like to point out:
    - the AMX 10P artillery observation variant is not in service anymore
    - the VAB artillery obervation variant is almost already phased out, as very few are still serviceable
Instead, AO teams usually dismount from regular infantry VABs when deployed in combat zones
These vehicles will be replaced as followed:
    - Serval AO variants will be put into service with the 11th Airborne brigade and the 27th Mountain brigade.
AO teams would dismount from these vehicles.
    - Griffon AO variants will be put into service with the 2nd and 7th Armored brigades.
These ones will be equipped with observation equipment and will not require AO teams to dismount.
Regarding the 6th and 9th Amphibious brigades, I can't tell for sure which variant they are supposes to be equipped with.

Always a very good video about France. Thanks for your amazing work ! However, I remind you that the French army is in the process of replacing its VABs with VBMR (Griffon), or VBMR-Léger (Serval). The operational regiments have priority, but the VABs are disappearing completely. In 2030 there will be none left. Currently there are about 400 VBMR Griffons delivered, and they have already experienced fire in Mali, before France evacuated the country. The VBL will also be replaced eventually, but no choice has yet been made. A modernization has been done meanwhile in 2018-2020, to extend its operational life. The French Army is in full transition and in complete modernization until 2030. All the vectors of the army are being replaced, modernized or in the process of being replaced. This will undoubtedly impact the tactical organization of the regiments.

fun fact : at the beginning of WW2, France used the somua S35 medium tank (by comparison to a German tank of that time, it was a heavy tank with the same speed as a medium tank).
This tank only had 3 crew members, unlike lots of more "modern designs". Instead, the French engineers had equipped it with an electrical reloading system.
French Army and auto-loading have a long lasting friendship...
Today, some Germans and French industrials are working on potential prototypes for a franco-german "new european MBT", and one thing they are sure about is that they want to use the french reloading philosophy in a german-sized tank, so that they can have a 4th crew member who is not required for manning the tank and is only here to control drones (both combat and recon) and ground-to-air suicide-drones.

@@BattleOrder iirc it is stg quite common in fact among "old" armies. They tend to have had a clear separation in social class, spirit and use between mounted units (often led by old nobility) and foot units (often led by new nobility and bourgeois).
But nowadays this has almost disappeared, it is only a remaining tradition.
For example, artillery, as it was tracted by horses, is a "silver arm", just like the Train, Logistics (two separate logistics arms in the French army : train, like the 18th century army train from which it gets its name, moves stuff and Logistics procure stuff and give it to Train for delivery), Helicopters and of course Cavalry.
Meanwhile Infantry, Engineers, Communications, Materials are in gold as they weren't mounted.
And you have exceptions: mountaineers are in silver, marines in gold, gendarmes (who are soldiers who do police jobs in the countryside and fill the MP role in French ops) in silver as they stem from the old "gendarmerie" corps that used to be mounted patrol in the old days.
So in cav the adjutant would have the golden rank and the chief-adjutant would be silver as it is the top guy who gets the arm's real color. Confusing, I know.

But still it has pretty good capacity to give some reasonable support to France's allies in case of a full-scale war. Good balance, when you do not have absurdly huge military budget, when army's military and political leaders understand what they want from armed forces. That's the reason why such big modernization program as a "Scorpion" is going so surprisingly well and on schedule. But still to few tanks and artillery for my taste, though it may change in future due to recent events.
In my country, Ukraine, we have a very chaotic reformation process between 2014 and 2022. There wasn't some proper understanding what army should and shouldn't do - we need to focus on possibility of full-scale defence or on low-scale conflict in Donbass?; we should invest in our own defence industry or to import stuff abroad? And so on. That led to not effective spendings of money, and that's why a lot of programs weren't finished before tge invasion. Still we made a big progress compared with pre-2014 and our troops are giving hell, but a lot of life could be saved if strategical vision was clearer.
      Sorry for my poor English

I worked on Leclerc production, as you see here. It is one part of a complete package of support vehicles. Now on holiday I had a real French tanker as a Dive buddy and talked tanks. What he LEARNED me is that a Battle tank running at up to 50Kmh is VERY LOUD. Everyone knows they are coming. That is why you have the "Jeeps" creeping quietly out front with all the optics and electronics to see. Now that cannon fires laser guiuded munitions, can dire reload refire while at 50KMhr. The "Jeep" Lasers the target and the Leclerc can hit it from over the horizon. Invisible. Now give me 4 Russian conscripts in a T72 who are wondering where their fuel tanker is...

In most Commonwealth armies, 'adjutant' is another name for sergeant major, who is usually a senior-level Warrant Officer (WO2 in the British Army, Warrant Officer, Master Warrant (MWO) or Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) in the Canadian Army.) However, the term seems to have fallen into disuse in the English-speaking parts of the Canadian Army, but is still used in francophone regiments. You mention a 'master corporal' rank in the French Army, which is a real rank in the Canadian Army, and sits between the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant.
As a point of reference and comparison, in Canadian tank regiments, it's common for Master Corporals and Sergeants to be crew commanders within a troop of tanks (usually three tanks), and sometimes Warrant Officers are in command. Sometimes, corporals who are on the verge of being promoted to Master Corporal can command a tank.
The entire troop is led by an officer, usually second lieutenants and lieutenants, while squadrons comprising three or four troops, are commanded by those at the Captain and Major rank. Entire regiments comprising three or four squadrons are commanded by Colonel rank and above.
Canadian tank regiments also have a wheeled reconnaissance squadron attached to the regiment, similar to the way the French have their recce elements organized.

0:42 it’s rarer to see sub-lieutenants as platoon leaders since most officers in France come out of their school as Lieutenant. Most commonly, officers are trained in the EMIA or ESM, which gives them the rank of Lieutenant after the end of their training. Only the EMAC gives the rank of sub-lieutenant after the end of the training.
Maybe there’s more sub-lieutenants if we count the ODS (Officier Des Spécialités), who are promoted sub-lieutenants after having served as an NCO long enough.

While in the Navy's case majority of the surface fleet is indigenous.
And most of the Russian inventory was bought in 1980's- 1990's is heavily modified for eg. T-72 tank with thales fire control system, BMP-2 with a indigenous optics, Su30 which has a Israeli targeting pod and jammer pod, French and Italian avionics and indigenous missiles, Old VSHORADS modified with digital architecture and control.
The point being while everything may not be cutting edge but the picture is more nuanced than a simple Russian weapons operator. In fact though the Indian military imported Russian weapons but never the Russian tactics.

" maréchal des logis" is for white force ( non combating force ( logistic, material, train etc ) ) cavalry is yellow force ( fighting force ) there are no " maréchal des logis" is yellow force. Only sergents.
You Can see the difference when looking at the ranks strips when they are not on the field. Yellow or white tell you which type of régiment they belong to ( on the field both have camo strips ) same with brigadier. This also is white force rank. In cavalry its caporal.

    • @laurentnicolas1550
      @laurentnicolas1550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No, the difference in rank colors and names comes from tradition : on foot or horse mounted.
Maréchal des logis (=Sargent) is for any mounted unit (traditions) : Armor, Cavalry, Matériel (Ordnance+Repair), Train (transport & logistics). Ranks for these units are in silver color (=white). In these units a Corporal is called Brigadier.
Remaining French units (on foot, as per traditions) have gold rank stripes : Infantry, Artillery

Can you explain the differences between the three fields of ISR, and who has responsibility over which?
I know Military Intelligence usually handles the I (duh) and I believe higher headquarters just divvy up their S2 section to handle that, but at which point does the job of reconnaissance transfer over from MI to say, in the US, Cavalry? Are Cavalry S2 sections the "tip of the tip of the spear" in this case? Who handles surveillance? Is it dependant on the situation and the scale of the mission? This is mostly pertaining to boots on the ground, since I know it gets a lot more complicated if we talk about things like Signals Intelligence.
Also, at what point do cavalry focus more on screening than they do recon? When cavalry screens, is that when Cav S2 handles the recon? I probably already know the answer in a sense but I just wanted to get your expertise on the issue.
