Since it came out that so called 'second army in the world' is in fact second, but not in the world but in Ukraine, sending some equipment and ammo is more than enough to kick their ass and in near future completely collapse this terrorist state called ru**ia. FAQ:
    1. Poland is sending Ukraine about 200 T-72M1s. We held off on mentioning this because it’s unclear how many will come from storage, but it’s possible this means Poland is dumping all of its unupgraded T-72M1s.
    2. Poland will not have Challenger 2s. If Britain sends over Chalengers to fill the gap of T-72s, they will be manned by Brits. It’s be akin to an increased NATO presence to make up for decreased national tank capacity.

      PT-91 Twardy is better equipped than it seems and crewed with highly skilled soldiers that can get the most out of this AFV. Half of these are, rebuilt T-72M1, and the other half is the wider and better-constructed platform. The latest improvements consist of 3-gen thermal cameras and passive IR vision, better APFSDS munition, modern APS of the soft-kill type, and a more than decent ERA array. The vehicle is fully hunter-killer tactics capable.

    • @BattleOrder
      @BattleOrder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +170

      I reckon they know their T-72M1s are pretty trash. There are people who will defend the PT-91 since it is their indigenous upgrade (although it's not unlike late 80s or 90s Russian T-72B upgrades which we acknowledge are not that great). The reason they still have them in service is likely because of budgetary constraints (can't afford to replace their entire tank force at once) and limits to domestic production, rather than it being tactically a better decision to keep T-72s around. Probably why they seem so keen recently to dump their T-72s and, potentially, PT-91s on Ukraine in exchange for increased NATO commitments in Poland.

    • @mateuszk3812
      @mateuszk3812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      @@BattleOrder Being honest PT-91 isn't just some "new model" of T-72, the main goal was to provide army with better modernisation platform, and as far as i know it have many improved or additional systems together with some construction changes when compared to the T-72 B. Not to say it is still a subject to ofthen but smaller improvements, so i dont think that calling it similar to T-72 B is accurate representation. Especially since its long-term potential to be upgraded with PT-16 / PT-17 program is greater from what T-72 can offer (mainly thanks to bigger turret and other production changes).
      Still, i have to agree that tank have its age and design compromises that should be adressed in near future.

      @@BattleOrder Exactly. PT-91 were stopgap sollution, and the Leopard 2 was chosen as replacement. When I heard about purchese of M1 from US I was sceptical. Its great tank, but We dont need another type of tank in supply chain. But then as war in Ukraine progress I realise one thing. Germany is not very fond of selling weapons to countries engaged in war with Russia. And that means Leopard 2 is no longer safe choice.

  • @mateuszk3812
    @mateuszk3812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +469

    If anyones wondering why we have so many tanks models - that's because the most of leopards were bought in a one time ocassion so to say, tanks + Migs in a pack, and since then there simply wasnt anything similar. That's the reason why we have leopard 2 ver 4 and 5 - the 4's are from that mass purchase and are being improved where the 5's are the later ones. I dont think there is a great leopard market right now, since the german army needs them badly to recover from years of funds cut.
    Going further PT91 isn't just a variant of t-72, more like improved platform, that still use enough similar parts not to stretch logistics too much. It was made before leopards purchase, since we saw our t-72 as not ideal but couldnt just buy new tanks back then. The PT-91 have much more modernisation potential, do you can say they are ours "first candidate" in any new tank upgarde programs.
    And to the Abrams - they are mostly a politically driven decision, to tighten ties with USA. Since they are a big burden on logistic as a totally new MBT type.
    Big part in this all is played by the changing directions for Polish forces dependent on who wins elections. That's why we have many sources of tank forces.
    The left-center is more pro smaller elite army with a ton (up to a milion) reserve and territorial deffence units, and dont have too much love for tanks, just some modernisation pack + going the ifv/apc way instead, mostly german wehicles (so basically less spending now, to have more cash for future army reconstruction) where the hard libertarians with "right" wing (its complicated but the right guys ofthen are more left than the so called left and put deal with some radical-ish right to keep the face in front of voters) are more about large professional army with wide tanks modernisation programs and much equipment from USA, including new wehicles, even if they are coming out as quite expensive.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Yep, politics is saddleing the polish army with a hodgepodge of gear and a complicated logistics train. Ideally what is needed is a large professional army with homogenized equipment, preferably with a domestic manufacturing contract or indeginously built. Abrams isn't a bad choice but personally given the geopolitics I would have gone with more leopards.

      That also suggests return to our favourite historical strategy: heavy altilery guarded by small noumbers of heavy infantry and stealing focus from all other units while light infantry softens enemy main force tiering them out for days in preparation for all penetrating- unstoppable cavalry push. Various tanks have different strong and weak points. Having a mix of various tanks allows you to use better suited tank for the operation.
      On top of that, I recently watched a video where crewman of currently Leopard 2 was explaining a lot and he underlined one important thing. Fact that he was first operating in T72, now Leopard and will most likely be moved onto Abrams once they arrive gives him incredible amount of knowledge about strengths and weaknesses of all those tanks and he got to experience those first hand.

    I've been into Polish Army since 2014, and man, even I have problems with clearing this shitstorm in my mind, and you are the foreigner without knowledge of polish language. That's why I have the authority to truly appreciate your hard work, that you had to commit to show that clearly. Also, I am happy you didn't comment the logistics of that - no commentary needed ;) When every division will have only 1 tank type it will be acceptible, until them - just don't think about it :D
    +But you could add, that 150-250 T-72 suddenly dissapeard, and somehow somebody started using T-72s, they could probably buy them in any T-72 store ;) And now there is a chance to fill the gap with Leo 2s from Rheinmetall and KMW storage, and that would be good (but germans are too venomous to allow that, I mean the politicians)
    The reason why PT-91s are next to Lithuania is because there is a lot of water there, in Mazuria, lakes and mud, and those tanks are the lightest. Abrams are on the right side of VIstula river you know why (70 tones, too heavy for our bridges, even the military ones).

I imagine during Warsaw Pact days, any new bridges would be designed with the lighter T-72 in mind. Thank you for going through how each level of organization gets larger while still keeping the smaller units in mind. This makes it much easier to follow for keeping track of how much manpower and how many vehicles there are without feeling like you're reading (or trying to read) the MCRP.
    After reviewing the previous video, I think the difference between this one and the last is that in this one you seem to cover units which are attached to the main force as you go up rather than in the previous video where you seem to review the main force going up in size and then go down in size for the attached units before going back up for the next highest level of main forces.
    Perhaps this is due to the semi ad-hoc nature of the subject in the previous video vs the more formal subject in this video, but if it is possible to copy the structure in this video going forward, then I'm sure it would be well received.
    Also, good job on maintaining a visual continuity when moving between levels of organization, such as between tank battalions and brigades.

      Generally saying: they are not really ready for war with mix of old and modernised communist era equipment and old and new western equipment but they are going through frantic modernisation right now. Since 2015 there has been a lot of pressure to get ready for Russian aggression but this pressure has been mostly successful in Baltics and Poland. For example Czechia (where I am from and where I am most knowledgeable about) has three main maneuver units, the 7th mechanised brigade, 4th rapid response brigade and the 43th paratrooper battalion. The 4th rapid response brigade is armed with Pandur II wheeled IFVs and LOV Iveco infantry mobility vehicles, pretty modern, but the 7th mechanised brigade has one tank company of 30 T-72M4CZ which are basically a Twardy equivalent (but the programme was a costly failure in money terms) and 3 mechanised companies of BVP-2 (a Czechoslovak BMP-2 version), so one brigade is fairly modern, the other is helplessly obsolete. Sadly the new tracked IFV programme is in shambles due to COVID and a change in government (the previous government deliberately sabotaged the programme in their final weeks to make the new one look bad) but there might be a creative solution for it because we really need those. There has been a lot of talk about buying Abrams to replace the T-72s but nothing final. The paratroopers are mounted on Land Rovers and they want to get new vehicles (maybe JLTVs among others). Every other central european army is in a similar state or worse. Only Hungarians might be doing better but well... I wouldn't rely on Hungarians fighting on the side of NATO if push comes to shove.

    • @mateuszk3812
      @mateuszk3812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      That's because the most of leopards were bought in a one time ocassion so to say, if i remember correctly we have to really pull our influence to get them since many countries were intrested in it, and since then there simply wasnt anything similar. That's the reason why we have leopard 2 ver 4 and 5 - the 4's are from that mass purchase and are being improved where the 5's are the later ones. I dont think there is a great leopard market right nie since the german army needs them badly to recover from years of funds cut.
      Going further PT91 isn't a variant of t-72, more like improved platform, that still use enough similar parts not to stretch logistics too much.

    • @Rrgr5

      Supposedly it was for tactical cohesion with their allies, like, having leopards closer to the Germans, since if they need support the Germans would use practically the same tank, same with the Abrams and US, the T-72 and Romania etc. which makes some sense, but makes it looks like Poland is a international military outpost, and I said supposedly because of that, since those choices probably were lobby centered, not internal itself.

      The problem is that it has T-72M1's cannon and armour. It may have fancy electronics, but its protection and firepower are inferior even to the oldest Russian tanks in service.
      T-72B with Kontakt 5 offers between 690 and 800mm of protection against APFSDS ammo and between 940 and 1180 mm against HEAT.
      The best ammo available for Pt-91 can penetrate 550mm of armour - so it just might destroy a T-72B with Kontakt1, but it's useless against a T-72B with Kontakt5.
      T-72B, on the other hand, can easily destroy PT-91's armour.
      This means that thanks to the better sights and fire control systems, the PT-91 will hit the T-72B first - but it probably won't do much damage. Then it will get destroyed when T-72B returns fire.
      No matter how many modern upgrades you stick on T-72M1, its weak armour and inferior gun mean that it won't be able to compete with even the oldest T-72Bs. Sad but true.

    • @kamilszadkowski8864
      @kamilszadkowski8864 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@igorbednarski8048 Yeah, I would say that lack of good ammo and cannon improvements are a bigger issue than lack of protection.
      Although we have to keep in mind that most of the time when MBT is knocked out of action it is usually when it got hit from the flank rather than the front. In such a case, even the inferior gun of Pt-91 or T-72M1R will do the trick.
      Still, though, it means that T series tanks in Polish service can hardly be used in other roles than defending entrenched positions or conducting ambushes.

    Look to me that you received information from someone in Poland with a heavy bias.
    19 brigade is far from being operational. Even more, are 18 division artillery and antiaircraft regiments that simply do not exist. Claiming that 18 division is the strongest is so wrong.
    The most NATO division is 12, not 11. 12 division is assigned to NATO Multinational Corps Northeast.
    Transfer of Leopards 2 east was purely political - it came from politicians, not military commanders.
    Not all T-72 are M1s, assuming that is so common. Most of the export T-72 (not only in Poland) were brought to M1-like configuration, but levels of protection vary. Object 172M-E3 is not 172M-E5.
    2nd brigade tank battalion has a mix of PT-91 and T-72, not just PT-91s
    20th brigade tank battalion has (or had) T-72 not PT-91.
    The 232 PT-91 alow to equip less than 4 battalions (3 PT-91 battalions, and one mixed). Some tanks are assigned to a training center, but not all are available for active units.
    The "Wilk" and K2PL are pushed by the local defense industry and politicians, the military understood as military commanders don't want them.
    Polish Abrams won't have Trophy or CROWS-LP, but will have Duke IED jammer and outdated KEW-A1 antitank ammo, compared to Leopard 2 equipped with DM-63A1.

    • @gdziewojsko
      @gdziewojsko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      And at this moment Poland transferred around 230 T-72s to Ukraine details are unknown. PT-91s transfer to Ukraine eighter already started (as a part of those 230 vehicles) or is considered in near future. NATO is to help fill the gap after transfered vehicles. So we have a big shift in the polish tank force happening just now.

    I think the Polish should double their order of M1 Abrams just to eliminate the Russian tanks and their turret tossing effect. The one big advantage of the turbine engine is cold weather starting when 10 degrees on down below zero, diesel fuel has issues in very cold weather. With the auxiliary power unit on the M1’s fuel consumption is improved.

    • @waynehankinson8210
      @waynehankinson8210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jason lack of proper tactics will get any tank destroyed look at the Russians tactics with better tanks getting beat by old tanks of Ukraine because of better tactics. A tank by its self is just a big target. A tank used with combined arms is a weapon. Also if a tank doesn’t have a slat type cage system or anti missile defense systems like the new tank they are talking about any tank is going to have a bad day.

    • @waynehankinson8210
      @waynehankinson8210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jason operating in -50 degree weather in trucks is done by never shutting them down , block heaters are sometimes not sufficient in cold weather if the engine is allowed to lose all heat over to a long period of time. Research how they operate in Antarctica. Running a 12 cyl diesel tank engine in extreme cold weather gives your position away. Trying to start a big diesel in -50 degree weather will take some kind of luck because your batteries will be froze or not optimal. You obviously never done any military cold weather training and are just talking out of your a_s.

      The Leos and PT-91s all use diesel, as will the M1s in all likelihood.
      Fun fact: diesel (DF-2) was the primary fuel the AGT1500 turbine was designed around. Nevertheless neither fuel hurts the engine in any way, and using kerosene makes little sense for Poland, as the tanks are unlikely to inter-operate with helicopters all that much, and supply will be done ground-side in the vast majority of cases.
