I love when a game looks creepy or has horror aspects of it but can end in a wholesome way. Especially romantic. Those endings are canon in my head for me.
For the most part, I've only seen those kinds from Ray K games. They are pretty neat.

I mean, she looks human enough besides her fingers (which she can retract) and her 'face cracks' could possibly be fixed with makeup and/or cosmetic surgery.

P.S. The girl that Seiichi bumped into at 1:29:42 is Lune, the main character from another game that the Developer made. However, it only has a Spanish translation out as of now.

*Great character GF, nice backstory, somber yet mellow music, sweet moments, balanced horror, and that wholesome ending just hits so right!*
Plus glad Manly finally learned to do the bad endings first to leave a good aftertaste!
Pretty sure it’s not a thing that Manly learn, it’s just that since it is a short story it isn’t as hard to go for the obvious bad endings first and continues on the good path.

Considering I just played Doki Doki Literature Club for the first time in a few years, yeah.
Honestly, I don't think Koko is a spider at all. The fact she refers to herself as a spirit type, and the cracks on her skin make me think she's supposed to be more of a tree. Her fingers are more evocative of a tree's branches than legs, to me. The detail of her having grown up in a forest and not feeling close at all to any of the other monsters seals it for me - maybe she's more of a dryad or woodland spirit sort of monster.
It might also explain why she's much more docile than the others, a tree doesn't really have the same predatory instinct as an animal monster.
There's also the detail of the sound of leaves rustling in the ending where you stay with her.
"There's a chance she's just salting the meat but still I mean... hey, it's fun til the end, right?"

Something felt weirdly underwhelming about this one. All the pieces were there, but somehow they didn't come together right. Maybe it's just the translation losing some of the nuance to the world, but only Koko seems to have clear motives. And even then, it's weird how she just snaps in one of the endings for no apparent reason. Then you have to wonder why MC absolutely HAS to stay in the monster district as opposed to taking the girl with him.

Yea, I feel like this game would do well to be much longer, letting you meet more monsters and complicate the decision. Overall it's pretty straight forwards: Trust the person who literally saved your life and has shown no real ill will, or... don't?
Uh, my take on it was it was linked to the foreshadowing at the start that all monsters can "give into their instincts" mixed with Miroku's mind control powers. Miroku had activated on both you and her and I assume on her in particular it had more drastic side effects making her more monstrous combined with an offscreen fight we didn't see leading her to unintentionally either kill or at least hurt you in that ending.
@@ManlyBadassHero I agree, and I believe for the Koko not being able to live with Seiichi in human area is because, monsters are probably banned from human areas and might be killed or something, while the monster side probably doesn't have such restrictions for obvious reasons, why would any human with common sense try to live in the monster area? Hence the rule not applying.

I actually believe Koko is a tree spirit if I went off by her description of herself and her design, it explains her almost branch like fingers and her "cracks" can be interpreted as bark, and it makes sense with the story.

The music in this is incredibly important. It starts off as a sirens' song, luring the player into a sense of security yet through juxtaposition also flaring up the suspicion. Then after a while, it's more a theme of comfort as you come to trust her. And at the end, it's a heart-tearing gentle tune that weeps amongst bittersweet last moments.
Ahhh, to become a trophy husband living in the middle of a monster neighborhood where everyone what to eat you while being protected by the obsessed long-fingered-childhood friends cute monster waifu...

When you mention she could be a/the rake, that still signifies she's a monster when she says she's less of the monsters Seeichi would see, and more like a spirit.

I dunno... a lot of things unanswered, Koko killing Seiichi in that one ending, never truly finding out if Miroku was good or bad or in between, the illusions, chance of implanted memories, living in a place that is eager to kill you and more doesn't seem so good...
In her diary, she mentioned a lonely girl she sees as a threat to Seiichi, and she decided to kill her...But why? and who is her?
I normally love human/other romances, but the “good” ending to this story is as bad as the “bad” ones. Seiichi’s choices are literally A) Voluntary life imprisonment with an abusive monster, or B) Death. As sweet as she seems on the surface, Koko raises _lot_ of red flags.
She repeatedly betrays Suiichi’s trust with lies, false promises and forced intimacy, then gaslights him by asking if he’s afraid of her or if he trusts her as if has no reason not to - as if a few home cooked meals and the fact that she hasn’t killed him _yet_ are proof enough. (He should be more _grateful,_ she’s taking such good care of him!) She also dodges Suiichi’s questions about herself and her activities outside the apartment, giving only vague, nonspecific answers. She’s his only link to the outside world, and she won’t even allow him to experience it vicariously. Unless she’s in the CIA, that level of secretiveness shouldn’t be necessary. Oh, and then we learn she’s possessive enough to kill any perceived rivals, and obsessive enough to stalk him and manipulate events to bring him into her clutches. Definitely someone you want to shack up with in a place you can never leave, amirite?
All that said, I don’t think Koko is completely irredeemable. I was willing to forgive the lying and secretiveness once she finally came clean. (The possessive/obsessive part is still problematic, but hey, she _is_ a monster.) I just wish there’d been a “Suiichi goes home, but they start dating,” option. Then at least it wouldn’t seem like Koko cares more about herself and her desire to possess Suiichi than she does about his safety and happiness. Then again, maybe a “no good ending” horror story was exactly what the dev was going for, in which case kudos, they nailed it. 👍

This was an interesting story but the ending didn't really make sense. Why do you have to go back and live in monstersburg rather than both moving back to the countryside or move to the guys place? Seems a bit too dangerous for him to live with her. Is the guy not going to have a job? Never leave the three rooms? Why is it such a binary choice? Leave forever or live with her? Why not somewhere between those extremes?
Its possible that him being around koko could lead to him being introduced to monsters and eventually being seen as one of them in a way. Its implied koko is fairly well known, so its possible those that know will accept him over time and defend him from more unsavoury people. If he gets used to that place his fear wouldn't be so obvious so maybe he could pass a bit during the day.

I like the "look behind the appearance" feeling, but am I the only one left with a yandere feeling. After all, her personal diary implies she planned it and probably even had killed at least one girl

I feel like there is also another option of just keeping in touch with whatever MC is doing in the city and then just moving somewhere else with her. Just feels like there's an in-between that satisfies both regardless of twhat they want to do.
Doesn't even need to be a separate option, but part of Koko's route. In fact, if Koko is so concerned about protag's safety, she should be adamant about finding somewhere safer to live.

Maybe this is getting a lil too deep, though it seems like with Koko, the first night (when she smothered him to sleep) was really the only time we saw her use her long fingers, and was the most aggressive then. Long Fingers do not seem like a "spirit" type power, and I would guess her "spirit" power could actually be implanting the memory of the time they were in the forest when he falls asleep that first night. Maruka I would say is still pretty suspicious, but if she could actually see Koko's power, then trying to help out the protag would actually make sense, including the ending where Koko kills them both since Maruka could have spilled the beans and ruined everything for Koko. On top of that, if this is the case, if you look at the endings through Koko's perspective, the only "good" ending is where she ensnares the protag with her false memories and they stay together. If he leaves Koko to live his own life, that should be the good end because he was able to escape the false memories. Maybe a lil too deep, but it makes the story a little more enticing
Interesting thought. I'm not sure, though. The diary makes me think that they did meet, and she killed a previous love interest of his. There were a few things that seemed unfinished. Who was Lune? Why was she familiar?

Koko is probably a dryad or some interpretation of it. A tree spirit. The cracks in her skin look like bark. Her hair is rather woody and her fingers like branches. She also seems to talk/be around a lot of animal/insect monsters. The owl and mantis.
I guess her mother could abandon her as a way for her to gain some form of companionship with the forest or her grove which she grows protective of. But aftering meeting the main character abandons the traditional grove concept and watches over him instead.
This is nice, but I feel like everyone seems to have forgotten that at 29:38 there's a passage in Koko's diary heavily insinuating that she went back to the forest and murdered an innocent girl. Why was this never mentioned again or expanded upon in the story??

I was expecting more horror, but got a lovely romance instead. My eyes were glued watching this and I liked the story and grew fond of Koko. I like romances and happy endings. But... was it actually happy?
It was for Koko. She found the boy who was kind to her when they were little. But outside of loving arms and good food, what would Seiichi's life be like? Seiichi was trapped living amongst monsters. He was, not even able to go near the window lest he become the entree on someone's dinner menu.
I also wished for more horror in character design - I wanted to see more of a scare factor in Miroku. I also wanted a Koko character dilemma - stay with Koko or not seemed like a no-brainer. What man wouldn't want her, tho she was a bit on the motherly/caregiver side vs life partner. She was nothing but kind and merely had physical flaws. No physical flaw should ever be enough to not love someone.

Her diary seemed to imply she killed a girl from his childhood for some reason relating to him. Based on the trusting Miroku ending, I'd guess Koko killed her for being important to him.
Honestly i wished more choice based horror games didn't have a clear "happy ending" Not that I'm expecting that amount of complexity from a small game like this sometimes simplerer games are the best after all but for high budget big team horror games. I think the clear happy ending kinda defeats the purpose of a horror game, I feel like there should be a degree of sacrifice in all routes to the ending like maybe for you to survive you'll have to sacrifice a likeable character or maybe even the rest of the cast then the protag gets survivor's guilt, or maybe it just isn't possible to save the whole cast of characters in any endings. Alternatively the best ending could be one that is very difficult to get, for example needing the player to make all the correct response to story based events that lines up with documents or info in the game. One of my top 5 games that manly plays here "The letter" Actually made the true ending not being the one where everyone survives but where you needed to sacrifice 4 of the 7 cast members that are closely related to the story otherwise the main ghost there comes back
Another way to push the difficult true ending route would be to have pieces of information given to unlock it sprinkled in the other non ideal endings, that way people would be motivated to play the other endings or at the very least watch it on game theory (lol), it adds reinforcementfto replay and go down other routes and a community effort to unlock the secret ending, although since people just look at the code or whatever that is it might not be as effective as whatever Fnaf does

On trusting Meroku, I saw the situation like this - Koko has the ability to put her victim into a dream. Koko did that to Seiichi the first night ("dug her fingers into his skin"). Meroku broke that dream so Koko killed her, and put Seiichi into a dream again. Now, Koko didn't have full control over this dream because of the powers of Meroku, which is why Meroku could make the first contact with Seiichi.

Ah yes, a cute game where a young dude is kidnapped by a monster girl 'til the Stockholm Syndrome kicks in and gives you that _good_ ending. Truly, one of the most heartwarming and realistic visual novel, ever~

I agree with the end assessment, & I'd recommend Crimson Grey. It's much more engaging when at any point, a murder could go down. Finding the "bad ends" are just as fun.

While I do think the author tried to railroad the player into ending up with Koko, they still did a decent job of allowing multiple choices to lead back into that ending so you don’t feel like the story is so linear. You could choose a few different choices and still end up with the same intended ending. I would have liked more discussion on the denizens of the monster world and to find out what koko was. The writer seemed to try and sideline as much if that conversation as possible, which works for time constraints, I guess, but it leaves a bit of a gap for those who want a better feel for the world.
ENDING SPOILERS
Honestly, it doesn't make sense for Seiichi to stay _in Koko's neighborhood,_ even though they could still stay "together" (as in be in a relationship). Considering that she can hide her long fingers, it'd make more sense to stay in a human area, though probably in a more remote area so she can stretch her fingers w/o freaking out all the neighbors. Humans accepting a monster-human couple for neighbors would largely depend on the individual neighbors you get, but so long as all the neighbors are _monsters,_ there's always the risk of Seiichi being eaten...and him having to stay inside and basically be totally dependent on her for _everything._ Not much of a "life" together at that point.
The writer probably didn’t triple read their writing to see where their writing loses narrative energy. He could have had a multiple choice which girl to stay with but from the amount of times Koko referred to the MC as honey they were set on Koko being main waifu.

This game was actually really scary! A constant reminder that you don’t have a girl in your bed right now freaks me out!
I feel like she didn’t mean to kill you. Her emotions were out of control during that route. She sees you being in a trance. Possibly could die. She killed Miroku to protect you. But her instincts, her emotions, and her state of being was in an intense bad one. If she got more time, hopefully, she’d calm down and reflect. I wonder if Koko also pushed the escape so you wouldn’t feel of fear and just trust her.

I wonder what the Japanese version is like, how formal they are with each other. Does she speak really informally a lot sooner than would be expected? (I’m guessing the game is Japanese based on the names and the way the articles are translated, e.g., calling the door “her.” Japanese is so contextual that it can be hard to translate stuff like that, which is why Google Translate shows some wild, like, restaurant reviews when translated from Japanese to English.) That’s my Dr. Jackass take based on my very novice understanding of Japanese.
Not gonna watch the vid now cuz I'm busy but the music that started playing really caught me off guard. Reminded me of the older RPG Maker games with melancholy pianos and a dreamy feel to em. Memories of watching To The Moon and Witch's House, alone and younger -- early in the morning, with a somewhat magical feel. Classic Manly feel :)

Despite its flaws and typos, this game has a lot of charm - it's a rough gem. You know the person behind it is talented, draws with heart and has an understanding of how visual novels should be. It's so short though, and the engrish can get a bit weird with Koko calling the MC "dear" and "honey" like an old woman. It's definitely an work I'd love to see turning into a full game, with more characters, new monsters, a better role in the story for Miroku and an expanded plot. Also, Koko's diary was such a weird touch that suggests she killed random people because of Seiichi and it's never brought up again.
This guys has a whole lore based around this universe, so maybe you could find some more info.
