Very much enjoyed the John Muir tour, thank you! It brings back a rather embarrassing memory. Fifty years ago my husband and I lived in Pleasant Hill, close by Martinez. We were in our early 20’s and took our 14 month old daughter with us, on the Muir Home tour. We made our way upstairs, with our group and guide. To our horror, our little darling, hurled her bottle, filled with grape juice, into the roped off room. The bottle top came off, splattering dark purple grape juice everywhere on the antique rug, floor, everywhere! I screamed, jumped in, grabbed the bottle, ‘I’ll clean it up!’ My husband apologized, held our daughter while I ran down the stairs to our car and grabbed clean diaper clothes..(before wet wipes). My husband said it was an eternity, as everyone heard me run down the stairs and back up! No one said a word, just waited in silence. I managed to clean it up pretty good, having carried some water with me..everyone just waited and watched, my husband jostling the baby. Finally, the guide kindly said, …’It’s okay, we’ll make sure it dries properly.’ And the tour resumed. We’ve reminded our daughter many times of her launching the grape juice bomb into John Muir’s room! And how foolish a very young mother was to have trusted her baby with such a liquid disaster in an Historic House! ❤

John Muir was also famous here in Wisconsin where he lived after moving from Scotland. It was in Wisconsin that Muir started to love nature. John Muir studied at University of Wisconsin - Madison. His family owned a farm near Portage, Wisconsin known as Fountain Lake Farm and is a National Historic Landmark, He lived in Wisconsin from1849 to1856 and from 1860 to 1862 before moving out to California.

Its closer to Montello and in Marquette county. Portage is farther south on Hwy 22 and in Columbia county. I fish all the time on Ennis lake where john Muir swam when a boy.

On one hand, Mr Muir would be heartsick to see the paved population right up into his front and back yards. On the other hand, I’m really glad it’s being preserved and open to the public.

I took my son there last summer and we had lots of fun exploring the house. I only live about 30 mins away. We made a spontaneously visit to avoid traffic getting back home. It's also great that it's free, or at least it was when we visited. My son asked the docent lots of questions and we had almost a private tour.
Did you make it up to the tower and attic where the bell is?
My son had a blast ringing it and looking at all the old furniture stored up there. I didn't know about his grave a few miles away.
There's so much history in the east bay.

My grandfather who lived in Oakhurst California took me to Yosemite when I was about 11 years old. That first look of the valley just as you come out of the tunnel was breath-taking and will stay with me forever. While at one of the sites I found out that John Muir came from Dunbar Scottland. My family also came from Dunbar by way of Texas then Kentucky ending up in Southern Maryland. My Grandmother was from a long line of the early settlers of St. Mary's Maryland, the Carrolls. I think the stories of my heritage are what started my interest in history. And in turn what brought me to your channel. I recommend that everyone take the time to look into your family line. You never know, you might be the descendent of someone very important in history.

this was a great episode....for me. My great grandmother, Helen Hay Muir always told us that she was a 2nd cousin to John Muir. Of course growing up that meant nothing to me. I just checked my ancestry files and learned that they quite possibly were related! Although they were about 60 miles from each other and about 40 years apart! I'm just blown away that at my age (mid 70's) I'm just learning about all this!!!

I've heard about John Muir quite a bit living in Yosemite National Park for a summer and in my home town of Modesto, CA:
    - Modesto Junior College, John Muir Hall
    - John Muir Park on High st.
    - John Muir Elementary school
He had quite the impact on our lives and history.

Keep up the great work as too I am a lover of Yosemite and the backcountry that I have backpacked many times. I was in Niles Canyon a few weeks ago as Charlie Chaplin impersonator walking the same path as he did in "The Tramp". Of course had to stop in Yosemite and soak it all in. My husband & I visited the John Muir house awhile ago. It was interesting & I especially liked the bell tower that is accessible from the attic. Thanks for sharing the history that I missed. I didn't even know there is a gravesite. Next time we get back down there we will have to go visit it.

Thanks for sharing! Maybe you can visit the grave. It's a bit tricky to find for sure!

Well done. Reading the comments it’s sad to see how many people haven’t heard of Muir, a true hero of the conservation movement and the concept of national parks.

It's amazing how the black and white picture doesn't do justice to the area where Sarah stood years later. The view is stunning. It makes me wonder how some places looked, photographed years ago. The pictures probably don't do justice either. So much change. Very informative video. Thank you.

We are often fooled into believing that folks of long ago had no color in their lives because of black and white photography. I wish we could go back in time and see legends like Abraham Lincoln in living color, hear them speak, etc.

I remember seeing the sign for this property the first time. I was oblivious to the fact that John Muir ever came out of the mountains and had a human life away from his activism and wandering in the woods. I appreciate all your stories, research and presentations.
