Transcendentally beautiful.
How lovely to hear this great slow air ( "Slán le Maigh", I think it is ) so well performed as the original Irish song. I had only ever heard it as a beautiful tune, performed by The Chieftains. Thank you for this luxury!
Written by Aindrias Mac Craith on his banishment from Croom, on the banks of the Maigue, in the mid-18th century. He had a reputation as a drinker and womaniser, the latter causing the local priest to have him removed from the locality, hence the lament.
If hearing this doesn't make you miss the motherland, nothing will
That song, that voice, talks right to my soul ;-)
Never fails to bring a tear to my eye, yet I can't understand a word of it.
You will never hear a better example of a song from the heart so beautifully sung and accompanied than on this video. Let no-one ever sing this song in English!!
Gosh, I just can't get enough of this song... Every time I think I've heard the best version, Muireann does it even better...
What an amazing voice!
What a wonderful gift, she has a beautiful voice.
The version she did in the Highland Sessions is also very good, although there the phrasing seemed to be driven mostly by the band. On the other hand, to my ear, it highlighted even more the lower range of her enchantingly lovely voice. All of her videos deserve many, many more views than they have.
Beautiful just Beautiful 💖❤️💖
Magnifique voix, aux graves puissants et émouvants. Bravo
Fíor álainn ar fad ❤️
This is exceptional. ...go raibh maith agat..... ...........the moral of this story ....Never p,,,, in the well you may have to drink from it someday

best ever. my two top favorites...
Ó slán is céad on taobh seo uaim * A hundred farewells from this place I'm in
Cois Máigh na gcaor na gcraobh na gcruach * Beside Maigue of the berries, the branches, the stacks
Na stát, na séad, na soar, na slua * The estates, the jewels, the craftsmen, the crowds
Na ndán, na ndréacht, na dtréan gan ghruaim * The arts, the stories, the good-humored warriors
Och, ochón is breoite mise * Oh it is ill I am
Gan chuid, gan chóir, gan chóip, gan chiste * Without a share, or right, or company, or money
Gan sult, gan seoid, gan spórt, gan spionnadh * Without happiness, or jewels, or sport, or vitality
Ó seoladh mé chun uaignis * Since I was sent into loneliness
Slán go héag dá, soar-fhir suairc * Farewell forever to her happy freeman
Dá daimh, dá heigs', dá chléir, dá suag * To her love of kin, her gatherings, her clergy, her scholars
Dom chaired cléibh, gan chlaon, gan chluain * To the friends of my heart, not perverse or deceitful
Gan cháim, gan chaon, gan chraos, gan chruas * Without flaw, without concealment, without gluttony, without stinginess
Slán dá n-éis, dá beithibh uaim * Good-bye, one by one, to its beautiful women
Da gcail, dá gceill, dá scéimh, dá snua * To their fame, their sense, their loveliness, their complexions
Dá mná go léir, dá gcéim, dá gcuaird * To all its women, to their rank, their visitations
Da bpráisc, dá bplé, dá méin, dá mbua * Their messing, their discussions, their minds and their talents
raoullf go raibh maith agut
What beautiful Irish. It's wonderful to have the translation but the original lyrics just trip off the tongue. Magical.
How beautiful is this poem in the original Irish? Sure it can be translated - but at the time, it can't.
This is amazing
Just to reiterate...some of the most gorgeous singing I have ever heard in my life
Etherally beautiful - agus bronach!
Muireann did a version of this on bbc4 with some very talented musicians which was exceptional if anyone know where I can find it let me know...Her beautiful soft west Kerry Irish makes it so special....
Kerry Evans I think it's on The Highland Sessions.
