      They should be in the rock n’ roll hall of fame! They are true American heroes! The original singer was my mentor in AA! A true class act! Men of culture and taste! Thanks to these men in this band I will be on time for work this morning! These men are the ideal men!

    I had the privilege of being an opening band for The Mentors back in 1987 at Blondies in Detroit. El Duce played my kit as it made more sense time wise . He loved the double kick and I was stoked he approved of my kit , caled it "a mans drum set"! LoL We saw them once before at The Graystone and hung out after all night drinking beers and trippin. El Duce was so friggin funny!! My sides were splittin' from laffing my ass off. Great interview.

    Great choice for interview. You are good, Jason.
    Funny to hear the details of these characters. Saw Mentors at Satyricon, early '90s, hauled drunk El Duce to a party on the East side.. He kept yelling out the window, "I'm a Burnside bum too!" Had no idea that he literally was by choice and loved it. Thanks for this J.

    I remember tripping to Mentors a few times with mates, it was a really good fun. There are some decent Mentors tribute bands as The Church Of ElDuce, The Mantors, Sleep Bandits (live project). As for being offensive to some people I don't think we got offended by anything at all back in the days, it wouldn't even cross our minds when listening Mentors back then or someone like The Raunchous Brothers these days. I got my Mentors tshirt signed by them a few years back at London gig. Cheers

    A few friends and I brought the Mentors to Winnipeg in 1986.
    Broy did not come with them, as apparently, he could not cross the border, so Ed Danky, as Papa Sneaky Sperm Shooter filled in on bass. Best show I ever been at. The violence, the protests in front of the venue, the media, and James and Lars from Metallica being at the gig at Wellington's.
    Next night's gig was canceled because of threats of violence, and that the bar would be burned down.
    I still have the newspaper clippings, and El Duce's and Papa's hoods, which I watched them make at the kitchen table of my buddy Jay's house.
    Their only Canadian show, ever....

    Steve was the vice president for Teledyne. And he is the complete financial backing that made it possible. Ed Danky. Was the original MENTORS bass player after STEVE went and continued his degree in electrical engineering. We lost Ed a few years ago. Eric, Ed, and El duce, Tracked on. STEVE is on up the dose. And is the soul in my mind at least. Owner of the brand. With a revolving door of guitar players. He’s one hell of a cool guy. No matter what our differences may be. We’re still friends to this day. Thank you for speaking with Mr. Broy, I wish he wore his glasses so He wasn’t squinting the whole time.

    The Mentors...punk.... Two words that don't go together (unless you're saying the mentors were the opposite of punk)
    Rape rock is way more accurate than punk...totally nothing punk about the mentors, even if they were just joking

    • @DrJ-hx7wv
      @DrJ-hx7wv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right. They were a metal band. They had longer songs and guitar solos. The riffs were metal. I also think they weren't joking. It was funny, but that doesn't mean that they were a joke band per se.

    • @pinverarity
      @pinverarity 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They were *absolutely* a punk band early on.
      They played punk clubs to punk audiences supporting punk bands who loved them & thought they were hilarious (for example, Black Randy & The Metrosquad, Fear, The Dickies). They _never_ played for metal audiences in L.A. They weren’t good enough musically back then and would’ve been laughed off the stage at Gazzari’s.
      You have to consider that metal was much narrower stylistically back then (‘78-‘83 or so); punk had a LOT more variety at that point. Metal didn’t really bloom into sub genres until the mid-Eighties. The edgiest metal band most fans had heard of back then was Judas Priest; most people thought Motörhead were a punk band.
      The first time I saw the ‘Tors was early 1981, at The Cathay de Grande. They were an unannounced opening band for The Gun Club and were added on at the last minute, as an amusing but unpaid afterthought. (Duce said they were playing for “beer, tips and blowjobs.”) My GF and I were cracking up, assuming that they were doing a parody of the dumbest, most pathetic stereotypes of metal.
      Actually, I still think that, though I still treasure my Duce-autographed Trash Bag & Cathay records. 😉
