Like 1: Why does a Latin girl not get a happy ending? 2: Why was the division and hatred and killing one another not addressed at the end of the film? 3: Why is the main white male character still portrayed as a hero, who even though he KILLS a brown man, his sister still continues to love him and ignore this fact? Idk bout you all pero this all still irks me. The hate and division is never addressed. The only great part in my opinion, was seeing Rita Moreno's character as Victoria who was trying to help BOTH sides.
It's an old Broadway musical from 65 years ago. They are not going to change anything Just because you didn't like ir or agreed with some of the topics...jennifer lopez always ends up happy in most of her movies
Well, I mean the whole movie is about racism and inequality and poverty. The division doesn’t have to be addressed, the ending on its own is addressing it in a way. It’s not just the latin girl getting an unhappy ending, everyone has an unhappy ending. Their entire fight was pointless, since everyone lost someone important. That was their way of addressing it. Also, Maria does know that Tony is a murderer, and she even calls him one. But I guess she’s just very unhealthily attached to Tony 🤷♀️
The reason for the divide and unhappy ending is primarily the source material. Romeo and Juliet is about past prejudices which result in a devastating ending. There are no “good” characters in the end. Tony kills Bernardo (despite his initial intentions), Maria stays with the man who murdered her brother (not dissimilar to the death of Juliet’s cousin at Romeo’s hands), the two sides fight brutally, and Anita betrays her friend. A story made up of grey characters is deeply important when portraying reality. Tony isn’t a hero; he does terrible things. However, he is a victim (much like every member of the gangs) of the hatred they are subject to. Everyone is failed by the system so fundamentally that they eventually become part of the cycle. Tony tried to make a fresh start, but his loyalty brings him back into the conflict where he ultimately falls apart. This usually good trait, when applied to something bad, reveals the true issues; good kids can be drawn into trouble extremely easily. The ending does show unity, however, as both sides unite to remove Tony’s body. It shows a unity in mourning and loss, driven by Maria and Tony’s relationship. Everyone suffers in one way or another.
It's not the job of a movie to make a moral point. If you want answers to life's deep tragedies, go to church, talk to a pastor, study the Bible. etc. This world will not give you the resolution you are craving. Trust me.
