The first one, 1961. Everyone played the cast album until lyrics were memorized. THIS ONE? Well, it was mesmerizing and far exceeded expectation; probably the best movie musical ever filmed. Spielberg is a genius at understanding motivating actors and dancers and apparently so instructed Peck; oh, light, editing and painting beautiful heartfelt emotional pictures. The beautiful segues from dancing/singing into dialogue--what brilliance. Love the Shakespeare dialogue nods and inclusion of snippets from the "Somewhere ballet " from the stage version. So many small things adding layers of emotional color and realism, i.e., Maria's drapes blowing in a wind of trouble. I want more Spielberg movie musicals!

I noticed the drapes too. These little details are what separate the great from the just merely good. Spielberg has, to me, made his finest movie with this masterpiece.

The genius of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet written and published in the late 16th century (1595-1597) is that it’s a story that can be set in different eras and cultures as long as there is conflict (and romance) within society and people. Fast forward 4 centuries later, in the 20th century modern age, it was adapted in a Broadway musical-West Side Story (WSS)-set in NYC in 1957 (Bernstein, Sondheim, Robbins and Laurents). This was followed in 1961 by a very successful and popular movie adaptation co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, screenplay by Ernest Lehman. Now we have a 21st century movie interpretation of WSS, this time by a great film director in Steven Spielberg. Let’s see how this one fares.

    • @archraskal

Spielberg is using the exact same material whose original creators were Bernstein and Sondheim. I;m wondering if he's going to tinker with tne original's music and lyrics? We know he's made it a point to have actors who play the Puerto Rican characters to actually be from that ethnic group. The music and lyrics will still be the creations of white men.

Just watched this movie and it was great!!!. I enjoyed the original West Side Story and this New Version from one of my favorite produces Steven Spielberg was definitely not disappointing. Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Fell in love Rachel Zegler a mix Hispanic actress and soon to be a "STAR"... The movie was funny , entertaining, romantic and full of energy. Would definitely recommend to see. (A+)

  • @mikomiyamoto3413
    @mikomiyamoto3413 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is my opinion
    Pros:
    The New One:
    - I felt so much more connected to the characters and it made me so sad when they died (especially Riff! props to Steven, Mike, and the screenwriters because omfg I cried so much lol )
    - this is probably because of time period differences but I'm glad they used people who were Hispanic for the characters this time around
    - the choreography was amazing!! (This coming from someone who is not a dancer though keep that in mind lol). I have to say the dance fighting was limited in this one and when they did dance fight it was super well choreographed and didn't feel cringey or awkward
    - the costumes, color-grading, and color theory made it so visually appealing
    - loved the singing and dancing to! Rachel's voice was so pretty and Rita at 90 is still going off
    - I love the trans representation it felt very natural and normalized not screaming "BTW THEY ARE TRANS" 24/7
    The Old One:
    - the very ending scene was very emotional and really heartbreaking (I loved it)
    - singing and dancing was wonderful to :')
    - the love between Tony and Maria was beautiful!!!
    - great representation for it's time
    Cons:
    New:
    - The ending scene of Tony's death to me felt a bit lacking emotion compared to the og
    - I'm on the edge about the lack of use of subtitles, I think it added to complicated divide between the gangs and races but one person brought up a good point that it just divides the viewers from eachother even more when the whole point is to make us relate to each other (but idk??? Just thought I should mention I'm more indifferent)
    Old
    - taking white people and "making" them "Hispanic" by giving them tan
    - the dance fighting gave me a bit of second hand embarrassment ngl :')
    - I had a hard time relating to the other characters and I only really related to Anita, Maria, and Tony
Those are my opinions! Civilized arguments, thoughts, or discussions are appreciated!

Don't forget that the biggest, most successful Broadway musical of 1957 (the year "West Side Story" premiered) was the nostalgic, racially homogenous "The Music Man."

    • @beethovensfidelio
      @beethovensfidelio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Well the fact that “music man” was nostalgic and racially homogenous was why it won the Tony for “best musical” because Tony voters prefer musicals that are safe. The 1950s was a very conservative decade, and the problem with “West side story” was that it was “too ahead of its time” with its themes of racism, juvenile delinquency, gang violence, xenophobia, and police corruption.
“The music man” doesn’t challenge or upset the masses like “West side story” does.

i wanted to see it, it looks great, but no excuse for not including the subtitles. glad it bombed.

Rita Morena , unbelievable talent and beauty . Unfortunately this version of West Side Story didn't make the impact they hoped for , in both societal and box office . It's a shame because it really is well made and Rachel Zegler was phenomenal , she deserved a nomination above everyone else in the film . But as you watch all the promo , interviews , news reports about the film , all they talk about is how they got it right this time , no subtitles , all Latina & Latino cast , which is terrific, but in this tension filled world , created solely by Politicians to spread division , gain votes , people want to go to the movies to escape reality , embrace the movie , but to have these political agendas in even the promotional materials . Spielberg kept saying the Latin X community , sounds so phony, not one Latin person outside of mainstream media or political candidates has ever used Latin X, and not downplay the Spanish by having subtitles , which also alienated a good portion of the audience . So much of the film is spoken in Spanish , without subtitles. How are subtitles racist ? If you go to any other Country they use subtitles so everyone can understand the language , for every film . Hollywood is so out of touch with everyone .They got it so wrong and everyone stayed away . It lost over 100 million , Spielberg's biggest financial bomb in his whole career . Still a shame because the film was well done , incredible cast and performances .

I'm looking forward to seeing this, and it might even be better than the first movie, but give me a break with the "reimagining" jazz. It's a remake.

IMO it’s not better than the original movie (the dancing in the original movie is beyond phenomenal) but the Spielberg version is pretty damn close. His is a little grittier and darker and I could’ve done without Rita Moreno singing (well basically talking) Somewhere but it’s still such a beautiful movie. Mike Faust as Riff is brilliant. The dancing isn’t the polished ballet of the original but it’s almost as good (albeit a little grittier)

@@milliemouse6525 I think you misread. I'm saying I've never heard someone as prominent as Spielberg openly label Bernstein as "gay"; Bernstein privately spoke of himself as a gay man married to a woman, but he never came out publicly and because of this, sometimes people rather mistakenly assume he was bi (as the other commenter does). I'm a gay composer and I know the subject well. Bless your heart.
