  • The 3D re-creation of a Hittite Warrior's face guarding the gate of Hattusa, the ancient capital of the Hittite Empire. The Hittites were an ancient group of Indo-Europeans who moved into Asia Minor and formed an empire at Hattusa in Anatolia (now in modern Turkey) around 1600 BCE.

Hittites are one of the most overlooked Civilizations. I suppose one reason is that they didn't really enter the history books until into the early 20th century. Another is that the Bronze Age is an era that is rarely covered in education or in pop culture. Therefore it's always nice to see a light shine on them.

Yeah, it's strange. At their peak, they were among the strongest, if not the strongest country in the world. Then, somehow, the Assyrians figured out how to win battles against them, then also the lethal Sea Peoples invasion of the Western Mediterranean was just too much.

There's one thing I'd like to mention: The horns. I assume they stood out of the helmets. But because this is hard to create, the sculptors of that time betokened them and laid them close to the helmet. We can see such horns also in other cultures' sculptures (e. g. babylonian, assyrian) and they all are laid close to the helmets.

Another fantastic piece of work bringing the ancients back to life. I have been fascinated with the Hittites ever since reading Michael Wood's "In Search of the Trojan War". The Hittites may have been our historic Trojans, or Troy may have been a semi independent part of the Hittite empire, called by the Hittites "Wilusa". It's on your map. Great work as usual. Please, more on the people of ancient Europe and the Middle East.

The Hittites were a Getic tribe that migrated in the 3rd millennium BC. from the territories they occupied in the east of the European continent, at the Getic Sea. Among historians, there are two theories about the path taken by the Hittites, from the area where they lived towards the Anatolian Plateau: one variant would be their passage through the north of the Black Sea and the crossing of the Caucasus Mountains, and the second would be the crossing of the Balkan Peninsula and crossing the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits.
The Getic origin of the Hittites is indicated both by the Egyptian paintings showing them as having brown hair, in contrast to that of the Egyptians, and by the affinities of their language with the Getic, as noted by the Bulgarian professor Vladimir Georghiev and the German professor S. Bugge.

The Hittites were long gone before the Turkic people arrived in the 12th century A.D. If present-day Turks want to claim to be the descendants of pre-existing ethnicities in the Anatolian peninsula, it is more convincing to claim to be the descendants of currently existing ethnicities that were expelled in the early 20th century, such as Greeks and Armenians. But they won’t do that for political reasons and modern nationalistic biases.

The Hittite civilisation collapsed 1200 B.C and the Turkic peoples, which influenced the ethnogenesis of the modern Turkish nation as we know it today, arrived in the 12th century A.D in large numbers after the battle of Manzikert. By that stage there were other ethnicities living in the Anatolian peninsula and the Hittites had been long gone.
