  • In this video we’re gonna to talk about the Danish architect Finn Juhl, specifically focusing on his organic furniture made for the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild's Exhibitions in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It was a period characterized by organic shapes, experimentation, and furniture that looked nothing like the strict pieces previously designed by Kaare Klint and other early modernists.

Incredible video. To me, Finn Juhl had an odd eye. His whimsical shapes feel a bit forced and not always ergonomic. For instance, Wegner's Papa Bear chair is a masterpiece whereas Juhl's Chieftain chair doesn't feel quite right. Juhl's vision is definitely unique but my puritanical American taste favors simplicity. There are some people who don't get Matisse. I love Matisse but I don't get Finn Juhl. I see but don't understand.

Yeah, Juhl was indeed an odd bird. I do think some of his pieces were magnificent, but sometimes he was simply lashing out in the dark. Most of his early wooden pieces made for Vodder are indeed wonderful, but I'm not sure about the over-stuffed furniture.

@@ScandinavianDesign101 Agreed. I prefer a more sedate chair. There's a chair by architect Viggo Boesen from 1938 (the same time Juhl was collaborating with Niels Vodder) called the Little Petra. It's forward looking but also simple, and incredibly comfortable to sit in. In the world of furniture, there are many mid-century modern icons but long before them there were a myriad of other brilliant designers, still unsung today.

Husk I kan besøge Finn Juhls hus, hvis I kører til Ordrup næste gang I er i Danmark.
