  • The 3-yard silk veil is one of belly dance's most beautiful and flowy props. It teaches grace and builds strength and flow, all while toning the arms in a fabulous way!
In this video I invite you to join me for an entire 20 minute class where I will break down some great veil technique and tricks and then build it into a fabulous combination that you can use in your dance right away!
If you love this and are ready for more, check out this fabulous online course that will teach you an entire choreography that opens with some stunning veil work!

Thanks for this--I have a new veil (came with a costume), and this gave me a chance to get acquainted with it. And yes, silk veils are the best!

This is so beautiful, ty. In our bd class we only used chiffon veils & never really got to work w silk veils. I love silk though & want to work on dancing w it more. Do you have any more veil videos, or fan veils? We used them to but didn't get allot of instruction. 💗

    Hey Sahira :)
An unrelated issue, I recently listened to an interview and how a bellydancer had claimed she had been the "victim" of negative stereotyping, (I know there are some ignorant people around, (i know, I've argued the case, but these people had never seen a real dancer, etc, just old movies and tv shows, but that has faded fast)
I just find it hard to believe, if you go out of your way to go to a place with bellydancers they would still bring that ignorance,
(the person in question is also a "Burlesque" dancer, and i think her problem may have more to do with her "negative background experience" and "venue" than "negative stereotyping of bellydance""
I mean, what would you expect with burlesque?)
    Whats your opinion/experience?

    • @SahiraBellydances
      @SahiraBellydances  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is such a big question, and it affects nearly all performance artists, especially women.
I have definitely been on the receiving end of negative stereotyping, which is why I make sure that a part of my job is educating the public to what this dance is and what it is NOT.
Although I also know that within the dance in the Middle East there is history of dancers sometimes having other (less respectable) side hustles, so this stereotyping sometimes happens for a reason.
We can only be a victim if we allow ourselves to be victimized. Otherwise I try to make these experiences an opportunity to educate (or sometimes just to walk away!)

Well i know a part of that in the west was due to a high demand for bellydancers in the 50's and not many real dancers about at the time, so burlesque dancers tried to mimic bellydancers,
I really really dislike burlesque dancers,
the common stereotype is that bellydance is the same as strip dance, (not so much prostitutes in the west, i know it can been seen like that more in the east) or pole dancing,
And in the west the only place you get that misconception is tv or movies,
The thing is it is fading, its been years since I've had to straighten out someones misconceptions, (ironical mostly women)
And guys can say stupid things when they see someone looking pretty/attractive
(it can be intimidating, and they sometimes counter balance that with something flippant, Brain overloaded getting Teh Stoopidz)
But my point being, have you seen this type of thing increase, decline or stay the same over the years?

Ep 107. Katalin Schäfer: Accepting Art Instead of Defining Art
You know how when someones "got the bug" they talk about bellydance a certain way?
