Beautiful example, running so well for its age.

Bought a 1940 Flying 12 in New Zealand for 20 quid when I was 17 (1967)! Used to fly compared with some of its peers...great big leather back seat too. I did cut down the gear stick, which obviously made it go faster....

My Dad had a Flying Standard 10 in the early 50s. I think it may have been a pre war model with a canvas hood. He replaced it in 1957 with a 1951 beetle backed Vanguard.
Yes, cutting down the gearstick certainly worked as I did the same with my first car, a 1950 Austin A40 bought for $100 in 1967.
Ah, the memories of the cars of yesteryear.

Nice to see this car in running condition. Hats of to the owner who has maintained it so well.
My father had Stanatd 12 while our Neibour had Stadard 14 during late 50s and mid 60s

I can only agree with every word the old man says about this car, the paint work and interior are second to none. It very much deserves and no doubt will command a high price at auction.

This is the first car i remember my Father owning. He purchased it from C.A. Britten & Co in Renshaw Street, Liverpool and was delivered on the 9th September 1946, the total cost was £587/7/6 which he paid in cash. You could also buy a good house for that then as well.

I'm not stunned but it is very nice. I like Dr. Who's police box in the garage. Also some other interesting cars in and around that place.

Yes had one of these, in their day they were ok, did some of my learning to drive in one of these, everybody double de-clutched and always parked up in-gear with handbrake on and wheels turned into the kerb if it wasn't on the flat

Almost too good for what is a pretty mundane car. An absolute beauty and credit to the current owners.

It is the last of the Flying Standards with a side valve engine. Bendix brakes will not be great but what a superb motor car. Why do people insist on reving cold engines?

More about the car and less about the owner, please. Standard supplied engines to Jaguar in the 1930’s. This side valve 4 was all about torque, not horsepower. I could start mine with the crank. The body was shared with MG, and featured a sliding sunroof, a windshield that cranked open at the bottom, and suicide front doors. It was the same body as the pre war Standard. As noted the doors shut very nicely. The transmission featured herringbone double gears, a first for me. Shifting was quite difficult. And yes, the brakes were terrible.

What about the worm gear steering box and wind screen wipers? I had a 12 in 1962/3 the steering adjustment was limited and took getting used to. The parallelogram design of the wipers had an action all of their own ! Dark green leather seats were a treat.
. I had to renew the side valves , taking off the alloy head. The power improvement on restarting made it all worthwhile.
. I was 22 and was loaned a neighbours garage . I got 22,000 miles use ,including several runs on 100 miles of the M1 and M4. in the dark!

I would love to have it but having said that I would not look after it the way that it should be looked after hope it finds a good home.

Not concourse, a few seconds in the first thing you notice is the rip in the seat on the drivers side.

Considering that Standard were a big company, it seems that they are not that numerous and not a car that you hear much about. Pre war styling very much in evidence on this example. 👍
