Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
    It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
This analysis/doctor reacts video is long overdue. I'm finally watching This is Going to Hurt. I've found myself avoiding the show for a while, and wondering why that is. I think, a bit like It's a Sin, I'm worried it'll just feel too real and what emotions it'll bring out that I've buried from working as a junior doctor. Maybe watching it on here will be good for me? Who knows. One way to find out!

im 19 on my gap year, and got offers to do medicine next year at some top unis. I turned them all down. This show was a significant reason for that. I'd previously read the book, but the impact that the show itself had was phenomenal. It made me realise that that's not what I want from my life, and I truly appreciate the people who haven't quit like I have, I wish them all the best.

I love this show, and it is very aptly named.
It took me quite a few months to be in the right headspace for It’s a Sin. People kept telling me to watch it, but I knew, given the subject matter, that it was gonna break me so I put off until I was mentally prepared for it.

Thank you for covering this amazing, yet gut-wrenching show. Hopefully you will stick around covering the show for us viewers for the whole series. I also hope you will give Big Boys, which I believe is another great show dealing with mental health, grieving and losses, a shot in the future.

    Vague spoilers ahead
    TW: grief and suicide
I watched this show when I quite frankly was not mentally prepared to do so and had no idea what I was getting myself into it - did not know how it ended or anything just thought it was a medical drama/comedy.
I literally watched the entire show beginning an hour after my best friends funeral who unfortunately took her own life. She was a first year doctor and so this show really lived up to its title - it hurt. As much as it hurt, as someone who finds it very hard to process emotions and feelings and tend to overanalyse things (I blame autism lmao), I also found it really helpful to wrap my head around what happened a bit and almost found it cathartic in an odd way.
Quite frankly I know a TH-cam comment section isn’t where to put this, but I have now 🤷‍♀️ (will also just shout into the void that I am seeing a psychologist and talking about my friend etc!)

This seems like it is going to address a lot of problems in the medical field. Is there anything we non-medical people can do to make the lives of doctors nurses and other medical professionals easier? Beyond the obvious of not getting sick.

I'm a midwife and I remember enjoying the book (although lots of midwives don't like Adam Kay as the way he writes about women can be pretty misogynistic). I think he came across as pretty unlikeable in the show, but it also did a good job of showing what made him like that. I guess I do see things from a slightly different perspective to the docs, but whilst they got some bits really right, there was a lot that felt really unrealistic

    • @Kay-vf8wu
      @Kay-vf8wu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Absolutely, though he at least seems to know that about himself during his time as a doctor, rather than normalising his own behaviour. Because he was a dick. In both the book and the show.

Im a radiographer and there was a lot that i was nodding along to as well, obviously not the same experiences but very very similar or things ive seen… this kind of culture sadly runs through the nhs like mould in bread. I cant remember adam kay ever really mentioning us in his book but if he had i’m sure he wouldnt be singing our praises either lol. I think i like the book because it very much nails the dark sense of humour you have to gain when you work these jobs

Please please do more of this show I’m a nurse and although not the same I still s found it painfully relatable ….and you are right it was so hard to watch….I’ve witnessed first hand doctors go through this and it’s heartbreaking at times

      @katierasburn9571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yep, im a radiographer and same thing. Some things ive seen and too much of it I’ve experienced myself… the toxic culture of nhs working is all through it and its terrible that an organisation with such good and selfless goals could be so awful to its workers

I've never heard of this show before but I definitely liked your reaction to it. And yes, it hurts, because it portrays the flaws of the system pitylessly.
I'm not a doctor, but my sister is, and I saw and learned (a little. As I said, not a doc myself) through her how tough the job can be.
She also suggested I read "house of god", which I did and liked. I guess it lays in a similar category than this show.
All people who really go through all of this and are dedicated enough to be good and empathic doctors and other health care workers deserve my uttermost respect. I can just hope the system does not break too many self-sacrificing idealists out there. Because it sadly and understandibly does.

  • @WatashiMachineFullCycle

I've never heard of this show before! Interested to see what it's about. Personally it's hard for me to identify potentially triggering shows unfortunately. I went through a pretty traumatic event in recent years where a friend died very suddenly and unexpectedly in front of me, so character deaths are always a mixed bag. Sometimes it can be very graphic and brutal and I'm fine, sometimes it can be off screen but things from the aftermath can share chillingly similar circumstances and cause me to spiral (Steven Universe Future being a show for young kids had no business throwing me into a bad way and YET IT STILL DID)
I definitely don't think you're alone, if I had any indication about these things before watching the shows that mess me up I would certainly hesitate or put off or even avoid watching it. It seems a pretty natural stance to me!

Yay I've been waiting for your reaction to this since I first watched the series. But I can totally see how it could be triggering for some doctors so take care of yourself! I've seen a few other doctors react to this series but they all left out the storylines about his personal life (coming out, problems in his relationships, etc) completely. So I'd be curious to see your take on that as well because I think it explains a lot about Adam's character and his behaviour at the hospital. I think his character is really interesting because he acts like a bit of a dick a lot of the time but you still understand and empathise with him!

Been working myself up to watch March Comes in Like a Lion for years. It really hits home on how the main character's mental health and depression. It's good, but sometimes it's too much for me.
Really glad I didn't go into medicine for the status and my parents' approval cause I wouldn't be able to handle this kind of pressure. Also now I see why my mom (who's a nurse) would rather work at a clinic than the hospital (even though the clinic is burning her out because they're not hiring anymore nurses to save on money which makes it worse on her).
It's really scary the med field culture is, the fact you're overworked, the guilted into overworking or making a mistake (because you're tired from overworking) no wonder there's burnout. Wow, this reminds me of the reddit thread where people asked what's one thing about your profession that nobody knows, and a lot of it was this episode

Although I love detective and police shows, I avoid Monk and shows like it that depict OCD.
I watched the Scrubs episode with Michael J Fox and I thought it was well done, but there was a scene where he kept saying his name during conversations and the person watching with me started laughing and said, "That's like when you tap your head over and over again", (they thought it was a great joke). However, I will say when Michael J Fox does that speech while struggling with hand washing - that person then apologised for laughing earlier.

I’m hesitant to watch the show ”the good doctor” despite my friends recomending it. I work a lot with people on the autism spectrum. To me it is so annoying to watch the ”awkward super genius” when I know how much people on the spectrum struggle with so many other things such as executive functions, sorting among information or creating structure.

I do really like the good doctor. (Only seen s1 as that's all that was on prime). I have asd and I think it does do a good job at separating the fact that savant syndrome isn't common. It is obviously dramatised, and despite being not that old the wording can come across slightly outdated, I just like the group that works in the hospital, and they do a decent job expanding the side characters.

Regarding your video comments, how can a system which is seemingly imbued with violence ever provide effective care? (Especially when there appears to be a cultural foundation of systemic and intergeneration violence).
Also, on your points about sleep deprivation, is sleep not considered a basic human right and therefore there needs to be alloted in scheduling?

I have tried to watch Jessica Jones a few times, the marvel series on netflix, but because of the parallels with abusive relationships, where he literally can change your thoughts etc, it was super triggering to me. Which is odd because i have watch documentaries about serial killers or abusers and they obviously discuss very similar topics of like grooming etc which is basically the same techniques as in abusive relationships and i havent been anywhere near as triggered. Like i recognise the similarities but i dont react the same way.
But yeah, had to avoid that show even though it looked really good and had actors in that i like. Same with the show You. I havent even tried to watch that one because i think it would mess me up.

Weirdly in video games I am les troubled by this so last of us, god of war (2018) and the walking dead grip me and help me; which feels weird since the TV shows are shorter length episodes and less focused on fatherhood. The go to example for me is watching Frasier I am a big sitcom guy and as fantastic a show as it is I struggle watching it for long periods now.

There are several shows I've decided not to watch because I find them too triggering. I tend to avoid watching medical drama because I have a fear of most things related to hospitals and medicine - with the exception of mental health.. Weirdly enough, I seem to be able to watch people react to medical dramas as long as they don't go into too much detail. I totally understand the need to be in a specific head space before watching something that can be potentially triggering.

I couldn't get past the first episode of this. It triggered me and I'm not even a medic.

I don't think I avoid watching something because I'm afraid of how they've handled things, though if there's lgbtq characters, I may not watch if I hear that it was handled badly (like if the overall message is hateful and homophobic). However, I do sometimes avoid watching some really popular shows (also books) because it turns me off that everybody seems to like them. That's probably more to do with my distrust of - how can it appeal to everybody? So I may wait a few years after the hype goes away to look at it more objectively and/or see some other points of view. Sometimes, I will watch the show years after it stops airing and at other times I'll be like - nope, I'm glad I didn't waste my time getting invested in something that was a let down or similar.
