I wasn't there when the building was built, but I remember my mother worked downtown at the YMCA and she walked with me down to the Georgia RR Bank and opened my very first savings account. I remember the vast lobby and thought I was so grown up when I received my very first savings passbook! Great memories!

In mid September 1968 I was on a Greyhound bus enroute from Ft Jackson to Fort Gordon, on my way to basic training at FG. The one thing I remember about Augusta that Friday afternoon was the The Georgia Building looming over the roofs of downtown as we passed over the Rt 1 bridge. The one thing I saw months later on one of my two trips into town was the Georgia Building. I remember the TV ads with the locomotive chugging across the screen....."CHOO-CHOO, Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust." I've read the Georgia RR story several time over the years, and today The Georgia gleams in my mind.

I remember when the bank was built, but I never did go in it. Thanks Bill.

I grew up in Augusta and like so many others I left ASAP for greener pastures. It is sad to see many of the physical remnants of my childhood memories fade into oblivion. I think that is time for the residents and city leaders to sit down and plan the future of the city. It will take vision and a plan focusing on education and innovation to reverse the decline.
