    Rolling off the lower bass like that could lead to a better ("less boomy") response in a smaller room with the speakers mounted closer to the walls. It's basically a damped EBS alignment that should be able to get you flat down to Fb if the "room gain" is right. That little dip and peak around 30 Hz is unusual though. Can't think of any logical reason for engineering a speaker to do that.

    • @williampoynton7323

      Hi Brian, I looked at the R series Kef White Paper and it shows the same lower bass roll-off that Erin measured. (without the small 30 Hz bump that is an aberration or something that only shows up in high-resolution measurements). I agree with you that the lower bass roll-off would work better with speakers mounted closer to the walls as would be required in smaller rooms for practical reasons and in fact, the Kef owners manual shows that in their positioning recommendations. Their more expensive Reference 5 does not have this lower bass roll-off and interestingly is recommended to be placed further into the room.
      Erin great work as usual. Love the inclusion of SPL and compression data.

Frankly, it didn't even cross my mind, yet I've mentioned it on other speakers I have reviewed (usually bookshelf speakers). And it's nice to have people catch stuff when I don't. :)

Case/grill work is awesome and wife is happy too. I do crossover the bass at 50hz, and I can push them plenty hard without issue when family isn't around :)

    Very competent, spouse friendly, nice looking small floorstanders. Would even work quite close to a wall say 1ft, would likely fix the low end up. Just don't expect those 5.25" woofers to do high volumes of bass from hip/hop or electronic tracks. I don't think there's much out there in this form factor that would measure as well. Thanks for the review Erin, nice work as always.

  • @Clobercow1
    @Clobercow1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    To me, it looks like they wanted to make a tower and get some low end, but didn't do a good job of the low end part of it. I would either like to see larger woofers, or passive radiators, or the tuning to get better output to 80hz.

    • @pliedtka
      @pliedtka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would rather see a 8" or so mounted on the side, instead of the second 5" woofer. Then possibly they wanted something for small room, close to the wall placement. Definitely I would close the ports (tuned kind of high) if paired with sub.

  • @hdtvkeith1604

    Nice video. As much as the low rolls off at 100Hz I am fine setting my subs to cross with these at 100-120Hz to deal with all the lows anyway.

    Very interesting measurements results. Have you used a different resolution or smoothing for this R5 on the Klippel vs the R3 ones ? The R3 results are much smoother and the R5 more ragged. Another thing that surprises me is that the R3 has a slight advantage on distortion results.
    Even they are using the same size 5" UniQ, the R3 has lower distortion on its usable range, I don't get it, I would expect differences on the bass drivers frequency range.

    • @ErinsAudioCorner
      @ErinsAudioCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      All data is smoothed to 1/20-octave resolution. So no difference there. The R3 scale is a bit more coarse which will drive the appearance of the results to *some* degree. The reason for the larger y-axis on the R3 is because a 50dB scale would have cut off the DI results.

    • @vinniethegreat9645
      @vinniethegreat9645 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only difference between Uni-q on the R3 and R5 that I know of is the R5's shadow flare is smaller.. Maybe that explains why the R3 is smoother. Maybe the larger shadow flare is better at preventing diffraction? Not sure why the R3 would have lower distortion in the Uni-q frequencies 400hz-Up.

    • @ErinsAudioCorner
      @ErinsAudioCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I’m seeing more of a difference in the tweeter range. If the R3 shadow flare is deeper then it stands to reason it is more “horn loaded” than the R5 which means higher SPL on the lower end of the tweeter which means lower distortion when the passive network flattens that natural gain.

    • @dohan2kim942
      @dohan2kim942 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The r3 has a bigger woofer than r5 (6.5 vs 2 x 5.25 in). Larger woofers tend to have more excursion, lower fs. This may offset the woofer area advantage the r5 has in distortion.

    • @tecnogadgethd
      @tecnogadgethd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im loving this forensic thread 👍🏻. As Vinnie pointed out, R5 Shadow Flare is smaller, so I want to point out it resembles more with R2C thickness than R3.

    The polar response is a bit interesting. This speaker is basically symmetrical - mirror symmetry down the center of the baffle. Shouldn't the horizontal polar response also be symmetrical, or at least a lot more symmetrical than the chart indicates?

    • @ErinsAudioCorner
      @ErinsAudioCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, I noticed that. I’ve seen similar on other plots from other tests. It has more to do with my script and the dB steps being 3dB. Rounding sometimes can make the difference there and while the Klippel NFS is great, it is completely within reason that one side may be 0.50dB off from the other side. Combined with not lining up the speaker perfectly (say, being off by a degree or two), and you’ve got a culmination of these resulting in the polars looking a bit skewed. When I used to generate them in 1dB steps it wasn’t a problem. But with 3dB steps these “perfect storms” are more noticeable.
      Hope that makes sense.

  • @BrianGarside
    @BrianGarside 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It possible to show spectral decay? It indicates where the ringing or stored energy is at a given frequency if the speaker isn't well dampened. GRR channel shows it when he evaluates a speaker. Love your Channel we need more of this. It really shows what materials work and don't work. Doped paper cones are a sure bet but others do well. Metal aluminum can cause problems.

    this is a really weird design, it's obvious that they focused on making a smooth Listening Window but at the same time do you really want that in a floor stander instead of a smooth Predicted in-room response?
    Eitherway the flat DI should make it 'Room EQ Friendly' which is really important for Home Cinema as well.
    All in All It's a good speaker, but a slight let down from its younger brother the R3. Also Distortion measurements are really nice for a Uni-Q.

      I would expect much better results spending the R3 to R7 or R11 $ difference on subs. I mean getting R3’s and spending the rest on the best sub or subs you can fit. R3 is the best speaker on the entire R series, measurements proves it, and logic since I can’t imagine R11 providing better dispersion and directivity than R3 because of its more complex D’ Apollito style array of MTM, in this not exactly the same but still 2 Bass, 1 UniQ, 2Bass...will change crossover design, bigger cabinet will diminish resonance control, etc.
