The oil seals fail due to excessive movement of the shaft, as can be seen at 1:10. Cyclemax offer a GL1500 shifter pivot brace to prevent this and to save the bearing. Goldwingdocs also has further info on the topic and there are pivot fitment videos on YT.
Pretty cool seal puller, i usually use 2 screwdrivers, one a thin long shaft flat blade, the other just any old screwdriver.i put the flat between the seal and shaft, then use the handle of the other screwdriver as a fulcrum, just pry and out pops the seal. I have a 1982 gl1100 and a 1999 gl1500se, the 82 is easier to access the seal
