Holmes, intrigued by the strange tale, investigates the matter and discovers that the house where Eccles stayed was leased by a group of foreigners involved in a plot to assassinate a European statesman.
Holmes deduces that Eccles was mistaken for someone else and was meant to be used as a decoy in the assassination plot. The conspirators, realizing their error, quickly abandoned the house, leaving Eccles behind.
With the help of Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard, Holmes unravels the conspiracy and prevents the assassination. The story concludes with Holmes explaining the events to Eccles and Lestrade, showcasing his deductive reasoning and his ability to solve complex and seemingly inexplicable mysteries.
