The actuator within the turbo is probably carboned up, that is why it is not moving. On my Ram 4500 with the Cummins 6.7 I had been fighting a P2262 code which everyone said is a "Turbo Death Code". With these turbos you have an Exaust Brake. Started using Hot Shot cleaner & diesel additive to increase cetane and have cleaner burn. Ran the snot out of the truck (75 mph max is all these C&C trucks can go) in the NH mountains for a few hours. Drove it hard with loads in the dump bed. Eventually it cleaned it out and no more code. Do these RDX's need premium fuel? If so, was the customer using Premium fuel? if not he may want to try it and do a bunch of hard runs for a few weeks to see if that frees up things.

We did one a year or so ago it was the turbo. It was through an aftermarket warranty company. They wouldn’t use the genuine Honda part. They sent us an aftermarket unit. I don’t remember from where and you are right studs broke we needed I can’t remember a manifold or something else was cracked It was just a disaster but in the end we got it done.

I had a local guy who does work on the side change it for me. I bought an autozone turbo. The dealer will insist on oem. There is risk the non oem won’t last as long as oem. But u could do 3 swaps of non oem for the price of OEM.
My guy said it was a huge pain & he had to drop the subframe to get it out and back in again. It’s kinda sloppy of Honda not to consider some level of repairability for these turbos.
Luckily the new RDXs have the turbos on the front side where they are easily accessible.
Good work ivan trying to save the customer from that 9k bill.

Like I said, turbos, EV’s , hybrids, might be the greatest thing ever to some , but not for me. Simplicity rules in my book. Nice work Ivan. 👍👍😅

Here in Sweden you can flash stage 2 firmware in the ecu and it will ignore the boost. And advance the timing a tad. Also run the injectors abit more aggressive. What is key is that this firmware does not give any fault codes or limits performance for any reason what so ever.
I would think in USA that's not allowed to do. But cars here before 2003 are fairly safe to do that on. And they can be inspected and passed even with engine mil light shining. However... They have to test emissions at the exhaust and pass the physical test.
So if legal that could be a route to go.
BTW... Following your tactics for trouble shooting I found a broken collapsed vacume line from scandata. I think your absolutely brilliant Ivan. And I would love go meet a person like you here in Sweden. Would leave my car without even the slightest worry.

Map reads intake manifold pressure. Atmospheric pressure included. It should read more than 14.2 w even .22 psi of boost. I suspect a boost leak and possibly dirty map sensors. And guaranteed the variable vains in the turbo are stuck. Run at least a cpl processes of cataclean in the fuel tank.

Thank you Ivan. You had it around the 8 and 9 minute marks, boost pressure sensor. FF data boost pressure reading 0.2 psi when code set. This is an absolute pressure sensor. The 0.2 psi is inaccurate.

Send the turbo to Area Diesel Service.. I would be willing to bet the price is a tad less than 7k.. worth a shot. They do all sorts of turbos.

Maybe there is an aftermarket tuner that can disable the turbo performance check from the PCM? I know HP Tuners can do just about everything, unfortunately they don't support Honda / Acura vehicles. Thanks for the case study Ivan. 👍

Ivan these are great cars....however if its got over 100k you need to replace the actuator assembly or at least the eye bolt that you adjusted...the eye bolt is available on ebay less than 50bucks...the round eye becomes wore out throwing of the clearances and changing the clearances while in operation....

    That was pretty interesting.
7 hours for the turbo - more like 12 in the real world where things rust. Plus the ridiculous price of an oem turbo.
    In summary - F that.

I think it's absolutely criminal that just having the light on can fail emissions. A turbo spooling a bit slow isn't creating any pollution. Something like a flaky alternator field circuit isn't creating any pollution.

Might I observe that the "theory of operation" is not complete. You observe the car is "picky" meaning there's a missing ingredient of discussion.
I get the challenges of design and the meeting of milestones for delivery and I get that LAST on delivery schedule is flow charts and theory of operation but as technology increases exponentially so do documentation requirements. Technicians stand no chance if (s)he can't learn how the system operates.

you can't even get a long steel rod onto the lever? how about applying some higher pressure air to the actuator? It's made to withstand 30psi, it should be fine with at least 60psi. even if it blows something, it's already broken, so no harm done? plug off that port on the charge pipe so it's not losing boost via the blown diaphragm, and send it on.

It varies in Pa. from county to county, as rediculous as that is. My county has no emissions tests, except for visual, and a neighboring county has emissions testing for inspection. Go figure. Pretty much normal for anything the government has their money grubbing fingers in. And many states have no yearly inspections. Go figure again! 😅😅

    • @johnz8210
      @johnz8210 38 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

In PA it varies by county. Some counties have emission inspection, some don't. The ones that don't just check the gas cap for leaks, plus some sort of visual inspection of emission stuff - make sure it's there.

It depends on the application. My 1983 Mercedes 300D-T had the original engine, turbo, transmission, and differential when I sold it at 450k on the odometer and the guy who bought it from me kept running it until it rusted down to nothing. Back in the day, simple turbocharged diesels were bulletproof. Late model turbo gas cars are a completely different story, and ever-increasing intervals for oil changes don't help.
