    Great video. I’ve been thinking about a feeder for the backyard; I live in the woods. I usually just sling some corn out now and again so the wife and I can see deer. I believe I’ll be getting this one. Thanks!

      So I did that video back in 2018 I think and I still have that same feeder in my backyard. The varmint guard finally tore off and there are some signs of squirrels trying to chew through the lid but it is a solid low cost feeder. You will see a lot more deer in your backyard once the feeding is regular for sure.

    I raise domestic geese and also feed a wide range of wild song birds. Do you think I could mix a wide range of feed sizes (millet to corn) into the hopper with out jamming the spinner or loosing it all? Thanks for posting a great video!

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex I think you would be able to do that. You might get a little bit more millet falling out than corn but I think it would work. Now you will definitely need a cage around it, otherwise the geese will learn to fly up and knock it out when they want some and then your feed will disappear real fast!

    can you do a review on your varmint guard i bought just like that one but i've heard its for the non-quick lock feeders and mine is a quick lock and ive noticed yours is a quick lock? would like you installed it etc thanks

      When I bought my varmint guard, I picked it up at a local Academy Sports and it was on clearance. Now it was a Moultrie varmint guard that said was universal. When I got home it was most definitely NOT universal. Because it was on clearance it was real cheap so I decided I would just modify it to make it fit. Basically I had to use a dremel with a metal cutting bit and cut the center circle out much larger. So I am guessing what I picked up was a much older model that fit the older feeders.

      Joe - I set mine up to run twice a day. Once at 7am and then again at 3pm. I only have it set to run for 5 secs each time. Mine is 3 years old and still running. @BooneDownSouth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea you got something that is not right there. All I have ever used is whole corn for over 3 years now. Both in mine and my dad's. Never had a problem. Maybe there is not enough room between the opening and the spinner for some reason. Or maybe you got a defective unit. If you can't figure it out I would call Moultrie and talk to them about it. You ought to be able to use whole corn with no problems.

    My issue with buying a plastic or rubber one is the squirrels eating through the feeder drum

    • @BooneDownSouth

      Yea I have seen that happen before. So far they have not tried to eat through this one at all. There are always squirrels out there because this one is right behind my house and I can see them daily. So I don't know if I am just getting lucky or what, but no squirrel damage so far, been out over a year now.

      Jack Sprat - I don't have any hogs or bears on my property. If bears are a concern though I would probably opt for a super heavy duty metal one myself - or even a feeder that you hang to get it off the ground. Bears can destroy about anything with food in them.

    When you disconnect the battery to put a new one in do you have to reset the settings again or do they save?

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know I have only had to change the battery twice and I don't think I had to reset any settings. I just use the cheap non rechargeable 6 volt batteries you get at walmart and they run forever. I have mine set for twice a day and the current battery has been installed since January. I'll pay attention next time I swap it out but I think it retains the settings.

    • @traumajock
      @traumajock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BooneDownSouth I was thinking yesterday (after I bought 3 rechargeable batteries) that I could probably use the non-rechargeables. I'm in the piney woods of deep East Texas. My lanes are narrow and there's probably not enough sunlight to charge a battery. I've worked long hours most of my life. Kids grown. Hunting for the first time in 20 years. I've got one second hand Moultrie feeder. It has a lot more fields to select from on the screen, but I think its screwed up. I bought a replacement timer from Tractor Supply. Looks more like the one you have there. I've got one of those apple-flavored sweet mineral lick things hanging. Got corn and soybeans for the feeder. I'm going to try something nobody on the club is doing. Gonna put out a trough with fresh water. It's been really dry and dusty up there.

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@traumajock Yea I quite using the rechargeable batteries years ago. A single cheap lantern battery from walmart will run it for like 9 months or so. Also, very interesting to hear you say you are putting a water trough in. I actually did the same thing over the summer. If you are going to do this I highly recommend checking out the videos Jeff Sturgis has on his TH-cam channel Whitetail Habit Solutions. He has a ton of videos on this topic and there is more to it than just putting up a water hole - I was really surprised. I am hoping to put out a video on how effective it is for me after the season ends. I have a camera monitoring the water hole I put in.

      @BooneDownSouth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cmp0714 - I really don't know man. I have never seen one of those except for pictures and I am not sure how easy it will be to mount to that setup. I'm sure you could fabricate something to make it work. When it comes down to it you just have to have a drain hole that empties on top of the feeder mechanism. It looks like the opening for the Boss Buck feeder might be too narrow for this moultrie spinner to attach natively though.

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine you would have problems with bears with any feeder unless it is hung up high or is a heavy metal type feeder. I don't typically have bears in my area so it hasn't been an issue. But yea this feeder setup in bear country probably would not work. I would think bears would tear it up in a heartbeat.

  • @natee2169
    @natee2169 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you hunt over a feeder ever?

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Occasionally I do. Just depends what my cameras are showing me and what I am after. If I want to shoot a doe with my bow to put one in the freezer then yea no problem. If I am after a bigger buck, which is usually the case, then no. Big bucks generally only come in to a feeder at night. Although in the last two weeks I have got some really nice daytime pics of a buck that started showing up at the feeder. I have never seen him before. He is actually the largest buck I have seen on my property, I got him twice on camera cutting through a powerline and I actually tried to hunt him this morning over there. If he develops a daytime feeder pattern then I might have to give it a go on the feeder. It's not that a big buck won't hit a feeder in the daytime. It's just that he might do it twice during the whole season and you have to time it just right, whereas the does and smaller bucks tend to feed there almost daily. If I am going to take an animal off of a feeder, I try to only shoot if there is only a single deer there, so I don't spook other deer away from the feeder. My feeders are mainly for me to track what deer are moving on my property, and they are an attempt to keep deer close to my property. I once had an older gentleman in Ohio tell me if you want to kill big bucks off of a feeder, then you need to run it year round for several years. He told me they have to grow up with them to be comfortable with them when they are older. Best of luck to you.

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nate - it's all good as long as it's legal. One thing to keep in mind especially if you are bowhunting - when 5 does come in - that's 10 eyes you have to watch out for. So just because you have a feeder out doesn't necessarily make it easy. Also, if you think about it - if you plant a food plot and hunt over it, or find a really good mast producing acorn tree and hunt over it you are doing the same thing. Hunting over a food source. It's just that you decided where the yellow acorns fall ;)

      @natee2169 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boone Down South Yeah it’s legal where I live in private property but only from the first opening deer season to the last. I don’t really understand that. But to your point I wouldn’t be able to have my feeder running all year

      Tim - I purchased two feeders at Cabelas last January. This one in the review and another by Wildgame Innovations. The Wildgame Innovations is currently laying on the ground behind my house because the corn got wet and molded together. I need to clean it out. On the other hand, this Moultrie Feeder has been running like a champ. I finally put a new 6 volt in around September or October. It runs great, easy to program, easy to fill. Deer are never going to be trapped to the cage if that is what you are suggesting… Maybe the deer rips a cage apart in the unlikely event that he gets an antler stuck in the cage, but the cage is zero threat to a deer!
