Thank you for this vid! I just got a retractable fountain pen, but it came with an empty cartridge. And since it’s retractable, I can’t use a standard cartridge refill with it, so now I have to suck it up and try refilling the one it came with. I appreciate you saying that you’re learning as you go along, too. It makes your content so much more friendly and approachable. I’m looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you for that amazing compliment. There is a learning curve to everything and we need to share out knowledge to keep doing better. Which pen did you get? Does it need a specific converter to use or is one just not available for that pen?

@@markyourpages So, I’m kind of embarrassed to say that it was a super cheapo pen from Temu. If you know anything about Temu - they don’t generally send instructions or any kind of information with their products. I didn’t even know it didn’t come with ink. The cartridge that came with it is the kind that I think is a converting cartridge - it has the empty bladder at the bottom, but then the top has a long - pole, I guess? - with a sliding tab that acts like a syringe plunger on the inside of the ink bladder.
Until I got this pen, the only refill cartridges I’d ever seen were just the bladder part. You pulled the empty one off, then replaced it with a new, full one. I knew I couldn’t just replace this funky new kind of ink cartridge with the refills I already had because this empty one was at least twice as long as the refills, and I knew I needed something that was the same length so the clicker would work to extend and retract the nib. So that’s where I was when I found your vid.

I used fountain pens in my younger age that was simple. The concept of 'cartridge' didn't evolve at that time. We used to buy pen and bottle of ink separately, used to fill the 'tank' with ink from the bottle with the help of a dropper! It was simple, just needed little care to avoid a spill.

I have very recently got into fountain pens and the Dryden was my first purchase and I love it.
Another good point about refilling a cartridge is it saves on plastic waste.

As a fellow fountain pen lover, I looooove this video! I’m not a big collector of fountain pens, I have a couple of cheap Jinhao’s from Aliexpress but my favorite go to pen is my broad nib Lamy Safari. And I was gifted a Kaweco Student by a lovely lady from facebook. It was a little out of my price range, but she offered to send it to me for only postage costs! That was really so sweet of her!
So, to make a long story not even longer and not go completely off topic😂: I’d recently bought a converter and tiny bottle of ink for my Safari and it was so much fun to use it for the first time😂🤣. None of the ink ended up in the converter, but my hands were a lovely shade of black, lol 😂. Luckily it worked out just fine in the end and I had a blast learning a new skill❤. Would love to see more fountain pen content 🤩.

Thank you so much. I’m hoping to fold in a little note pen content.

Thank you, thank you!! This was very well explained and demonstrated. I’m about to get a new “real” fountain pen as I’ve gotten back into them. I don’t want to deal with the converter (Kaweco Sport) so I wanted to see if this worked and how challenging it was. Looks pretty easy (yes…spilling that bottle is my worst nightmare, and I’m a spiller!) great video, Mark!

Thanks. I’m a spiller too. Just spilled a sample bottle last night.

I just tried this and thought I did something wrong because it wasn't writing. So glad you included that part in your video to see! Wish I would've watched your video first to know the tidbit about the vacuum seal not letting ink escape when rinsed. Totally cracked a cartridge trying to figure it out lol
Also not sure if it's the new ink I tried or if I did something but it's even thinner and scratchier than it was. 😱

It’s all trial and error. I’ve been learning for years and always tend to mess something up.

Might have a little residual black in the feed causing the color variance as well. Might order a bulb syringe (baby booger sucker) to flush your sections and feeds. Sometimes when I have a stubborn ink I will fill the cartridge with water and rest the nib in a paper towel to leech it out as well. Really like your pen! Will have to look at one of those. Im 5yrs into the fountain pen rabbit hole and this one is new to me!

You are probably right about the ink being stuck... also there was more water in there too which I think watered it down a bit. Lessons learned and excited to continue to use all these fun inks and pens.
