Spent 3-years on the USS Pivot MSO 463 from 1966-1969. I was a minesweep electrician and this video brought back lots of memories, but I learn a few things I didn't know about sweeping.

I got onboard the USS Impervious MSO 449 Oct.'70 while it and 4 others was still being overhauled at Dillingham, Honolulu Harbor. I was a signalman striker at the time. We got towed from Honolulu over to Pearl Jan. 9, 1971, got underway under our own power Jan. 18. Made SM2 on it. Got transferred to the starship Enterprise late March '73 during Operation Endsweep, Haiphong Harbor. I didn't do it all, so it will not show up on my DD-214.

My old ship was the USS Bold MSO-424. Captain ignored Combat recommendations, and we ran into a hurricane. Lost radar, radio masts and wiped the numbers off the front of the boat. Limped back into port, and the ship, and CO, both sank at the pier!

I found this on the Internet Archives website. It doesn't indicate if it is copyrighted or not. If this was made for the US Navy it should be in the public domain. I am doing a video on a minesweeper. Can I use a couple clips from this footage in my video? thank you.

MSO 509 1964-66...Great ship with well-trained and dedicated sailors...A tight knit deployment team led by our Boatswain Mates, who were invaluable for directing the safe streaming and recovery of gear. Toughest challenge was the combination sweep with the Hammer Box 'inside' the mag loop. Mediterranean deployment highlight of tour. Wooden ship with truly Iron Men. Honored to serve with them. C.O.

I also served on the Adroit MSO 509 1972-1973 as a seamen out of Charleston, SC. It was an interesting ship to be on. During this time there were some serious maintenance issues. One time we went out with no fire pumps working. Another time the radar failed to detect a Sea Train container ship (which I believe were quite new back then) popping out of the fog when we were at sea anchor. Another time the evaporators failed and we needed to get fresh water from an oilier. This was all in the approx. 8 months I was assigned to her.
Also we were quite short on men. If I remember correctly, we had a complement of 53 men with 3 officers. Wikipedia states the complement was 78 (I remember 72 but maybe it varied over time). Anyway, out at sea it was 2-section duty all of the time. I remember when rotated to aft steering you tried to get some sleep but at least half the time the main steerage would fail and the alarm was enough to wake the dead.
Despite all of this, it was a very interesting experience which I did not appreciate until many years later. It was the challenges which made it interesting. And nobody was purposely shooting at us which I appreciated. I also was a mess cook also and I still wash all the dishes for the household.
