There are 10 fetters (Saṃyojana) that prevents or obstructs one from nibbana: 1) Personality perspective (Sakkāya-diṭṭhi) 2) Cognitive dissonance, Vacillation (Vicikicchā) 3) Heteronomous morality (Sīlabbata-parāmāsa) 4) Lust for sensual pleasures (Kāma-rāga) 5) Ill-will and Hatred towards pain (Paṭigha - also vyāpāda / byāpāda ) 6) Lust for mental imagery (Rūpa-rāga) 7) Lust for vacuity (Arūpa-rāga) 8) Conceit & Sense of Ego Self (Māna) 9) Restlessness & Agitation (Uddhacca) 10) Insentience, Not knowing (Avijjā). There are 4 stages of ariya attainment: 1) Stream Entrant (Sotāpanna) when first 3 fetters are fully eradicated 2) Once-Returner (Sakadāgāmi) when 4th and 5th fetters greatly reduced 3) Non-Returner (Anāgāmi) when 4th and 5th fetters fully eradicated 4) Breaker of Bonds (Arahat) when last 5 fetters fully eradicated
