Amy Schumer Talks Body Shaming in 'I Feel Pretty'

  • In her new film I Feel Pretty, Amy Schumer plays Renee, a woman with rock-bottom self esteem. When she hits her head in a Soul Cycle class, she starts seeing herself as supermodel beautiful-even though nothing about her physical appearance has actually changed. When the trailer was first released, it was met with some criticism regarding its apparent message on body positivity. Broadly sat down with Amy to discuss this backlash, and why she stands by the themes of her new film.

    I can’t sing the praises of the film enough. When I watched it, I felt like I was watching my own life. It was so honest. People totally missed the point.

    Sincerely, this movie since I saw it in the theaters has been an instant favorite. I felt like I was being heard and seen through the films portrayal of realism when we 'lose that little girl confidence and begin to doubt ourselves'. The movie was brilliant in bringing out that we are so much more than what we often fill our heads with in insecurities. What we are capable of is incredible when we look inwardly and let that beautiful, optimistic person be able to shine outwardly and do incredible things. I've watched and shown this movie to so many of my friends and family, they all love it and see clearly the message that Amy is stating here in the interview. Cannot say enough amazing things about this film!

    Trainwreck was surprisingly good. The hate for Amy Schumer is so disproportionate. Can she do better at stopping being a white feminist and being a real feminist? Yes, asbolutely. Are some of her joke unoriginal? Yeah totally, although this is true for 90% of comedians. Is she unfunny? This is obviously subjective. The hate she gets it insane. I kind of want to give it a chance now. Also the interviewer was really really good. Asked interesting questions and gave the correct amount of room, probed this issues without going on attack or pandering.

      There shouldn't be a backlash over the trailer. There's nothing offensive about it and is most certainly is NOT claiming that all women are incapable of seeing themselves in a positive way unless they get a brain injury.
      But the premise looks very unfunny and critics have said the movie is not very entertaining and has few laughs.

      I watched the 1st hour. I laughed so hard that I cried in a few places, because all of the characters, except Gram and Mason, were so pathetic. I don't know which political movements are more ridiculous, those based on Body Positivity Theory or on Critical Race Theory. They would be humorous, were they not so harmful and divisive.
      The female protagonist, Renee, wasn't at an unhealthy weight, but she could easily get there. You can tell Amy Schumer had to lose some weight for the bikini contest scene, ha ha ha. As of 2017, 4 in 10 Americans were dangerously obese, which contributes to premature death from preventable conditions such as "heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer" [1]. The primary, but not only, cause of this is a lack of self-discipline.

    I don't get the backlash towards this film at all? Social Media has turned into a witch hunt. I think many women suffer with self esteem issues and those moaning that this shows women in a bad light clearly have no idea what it's like to be a forgotten mousy woman in the world, especially in the world of online dating, instagram and life in general.

    I relocated my whole life from Kansas to Texas in June 2022, after my offer letter said, "$5000 relocation assistance" and a week later I was told they would not honor the relocation. I then have found out since, it is because I was too fat and the CEO didn't want me to take the job. I wasn't a superficial, thin woman like the protocol of his employees of his company. It is disgusting to be judged by your physical size and not by the level of skills you have to accomplish a job and be successful. I went from Employee of the Month to fired, because I wasn't the "right fit." The COO commented to my Director that quit on my first day, "She is way too big, you shouldn't have hired her, she isn't a good fit." The Director and HR Manager were so disgusted that the CEO & COO would comment that they both quit even after I agreed to move here despite the recall of my relocation assistance. I used to let my weight define me, I refuse to anymore. I have to stand up and be a testimony for every person, male or female, to ever be discriminated against because of their physical size. I look forward to some day sharing my story, to help impact lives in a positive and profound way, authentically.

    Thank you to the interviewer for asking what Amy might have done differently (regarding the trailer). I thought she was an executive producer of the film (Amy) and was confused why the trailer had been cut that way. I have to deal with letting marketing people and SEO people sort of guide my creative endeavors, too...so I understand. I had the same negative sort of reaction to the trailer (and the title at first)...but decided I was going to see it and not make my decision from the short trailer. After listening to Amy talk, I'm excited to go see it (later this week!)...thanks for this thoughtful interview!

    But when MAN in shallow Hal is hypnotize to see the beauty in a woman's mind and overlooks her non model appearance, where were you ladies then to be in such outrage? All of you need to jump off the band wagon and relax.

    • @irinaabbasi5027
      @irinaabbasi5027 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Green women are jealous and mad at those who can sincerely say they love themselves without any buts and a long list of things they want to change about themselves. We are taught too look at our bodies as a project for "improvents" and possible gaining of approval from outside and self-love as a reward for efforts. The girl from shallow hal didn't feel beautiful but was told it and more importantly women see this case acceptable as she DESERVED to be loved for her giving soul. In I feel pretty the girl genuinely feels happy about her appearance without any body transformation, psychological drama of overcoming body image problems, approval from outside. It seems outrageous for girls that she can love and feel pretty just because... The truth is all this stupid backlash is from women who can't make peace with oneselves and hate on those who can

    I think the backlash has more to do with how people feel about Amy Schumer than the film itself. Yeah, she stole jokes, and that's terrible - it is essentially copyright theft from fellow comedians. But I find it odd that she gets more shit for that than, say, Louis CK gets for sexually harassing people in some quarters.

      zw0lfb4um Exactly! I also can’t stand the fat-shaming she has to deal with. Sure by Hollywood standards, she’s fat, but in the real world, her body size is *below* the average size of an American woman.
      If Amy were a man, no one would make fun of her for being “fat” and “ugly”.
      I mean, the late John Candy was way fatter than Amy, yet I don’t recall anyone fat-shaming Candy like they do with Schumer.

    Broadly, can you please focus on telling the stories of the women of the world? I don't really like the angle that your narrative brings to Hollywood. I really prefer the stories about the way women throughout the world live. I want to better understand womanhood through their stories, rather than the stories of Hollywood.

    • @PrinceOfLillies
      @PrinceOfLillies 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Natasja I think this story deserves a place in your ‘worldly women’ group. I think Amy’s comedy relates to what a lot of women in the world go through! Certainly not most women! But some clearly.
      We can talk about both can’t we?

    • @natasja3052
      @natasja3052 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We can talk about both. I just don't want to.
      I personally don't want to hear/see things about Amy Schumer; she defends herself constantly by talking about sexism/misogyny/female body image/etc. I think it demeans sexism to use it as a defence against valid criticisms against her poor acting/comedy.

    Amy did a perfect job of explaining what I wanted to feel after watching this film. I felt the opposite. In the end, she had to have her boyfriend tell her she was pretty in order to actually believe it. Pretty much everything Emily Ratajkowski's character said coupled with Amy's character's reactions undermined her point. "I didn't want to show the supermodel or define what it was" but Emily Ratajkowski's character serves as the image. It's not her presence in the movie but how she is treated in order to compare to Renee. Her character could have been used to prove Amy's point but instead it undercut it. The trailer did a better job of explaining the points in this video than the movie did. I walked out of this theater with more negative thoughts about my body and me than I had going in.

    I think the "backlash" from the years of undenianble joke stealing is a bit stronger, Amy. How bout you confront that one. It's a little more important.

    She tried to send a good message, and she kinda did. My biggest problem with it is it was not even remotely funny. I loved Amy's show and other movies, but this was just not funny in the slightest.

      True, but that's where self esteem issues begin. Many women and men continue to cary insecurities through out life, so this movie is for everyone. I don't think it's just focused on teens.

    TOO many people have TOO many opinions about EVERYTHING.!! Those individuals appear to think it their right to offer their opinion, unfortunately too often in advance of even viewing the whole movie. Gaining an awareness of the movie from the trailer must be a skill only a select few who appear to know so much must possess, in addition to thinking their opinion matters most as they perceive that what they have to say is the be all and end all.

    She's so likable. Why does she get so much hate?

  • @coreykindle5892
    @coreykindle5892 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's the thing. Hate is a strong word, so when you say you hate somebody BUT you don't have s specific reason for that then you're just saying it because everybody else is saying it. Me personally, I don't necessarily hate her but I'm disappointed in her for 2 reasons. She stole jokes and she's turned into one of those overboard feminists. I personally think she's pushing an agenda for feminists as if they're paying her to promote this but that's just my crazy theory. I could be wrong. Atleast I have my reasons for being disappointed

    She's not bad looking, but she's not a bombshell.
    She's perfectly average, so what's this delusion about being hot? Be real here.
    How about you base your value on something other than your looks? Being a bombshell is not a human right.

    • @jeffcowdrey1578
      @jeffcowdrey1578 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Philippe, I suppose it has never occurred to you that 'being hot' does not necessarily depend on conventional beauty. It's more of an attitude.
