I have the same 20T press ….. from good old harbor freight 😀 I also didn’t need 20T but it was the only size in stock the day I wanted to get it. They do sell a 5T and 10T which are smaller and cheaper but they are not always in stock. Even the 5T is probably more than sufficient for doing bearings and the like. It’s well worth the investment even if you end up getting the bigger one. The 20T is quite heavy to move around and I suggest you do like I did ….. got some inexpensive roller wheels on Amazon. There are holes in the bottom frame of the press and it takes 5 minutes to put the wheels on and it makes it so easy to move around and store out of the way.
if you put the bearing in a oven for an half our at 250 °F and put the Pinion in the fridge, than you cn just drop the bearing on the pinion w/o a need of pressure. You can also act with the housing of the axle and those bearings.
Do you have a service manual for instaling RING GEAR AND PINION, for the Mercedes W109 Swing axle? My question is, How do you measure pinion depth, on such a type of rear axle and do you know what control measurement it should be.
I do not have a manual regarding this. There are some special tools from MB that measure the depth. Not readily available. I am going to use the original shim and start from there. I expect there's going to be a lot of trial and error to get the correct contact on the gear teeth plus correct backlash. Come join us on Mercedes Maintenance on Facebook. I don't James. Its more of a specialist thing. I think there are companies around that do it. My 4.5 had one and its on the shelf at the moment. I fitted a spring for the time being. Come join our facebook group Mercedes Maintenance and ask there. You'll get some input I'm sure. Cheers John. facebook.com/groups/1320965937922962
Are you referring to the outer smaller bearing race? That just slides on and is torqued down against the compression ring. From memory it has to be around the 20 inch pounds of rotational torque. I talk about this during the pinion seal replacement video. If I'm talking about the wrong thing, shoot me another comment, I'll be happy to answer. Cheers John.
@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 Yes, thank you for your reply. I just finished rebuilding mine a few days ago and it was so simple I think a 5-year-old child can do it with the right tools. The best thing about this differential is that you don't have to shim the ring gear. Did you ever replace the bearings on the rear wheel axle hub, I can't find a video for this C230 w203 2004
Hi! I was changing wheelbearing on a w110 and i was wondering how does The bearing get lubrication as it has seals on both sides. Atleast the old one didn't have any grease
Thanks Mike. I learnt something, but that happens frequently!
Thank you Mike, excellent video, very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it. Still lots to do on the rear end. Want to get back to it in the Winter months. Cheers John 🍻

Thanks for the idea. It could also do with raising up a bit. I got the 20t because of a sale.
Cheers John 🍻

Yes, I mentioned that metbod. Looks pretty easy.

Hi mate, do you have a video on how to rebuild the diff hydropneumatic compensator by chance?

Do you remember how you installed the other bearing on the other side after you put the pinion gear into the differential casing

Are you referring to the rear? They should be greased. There's an inner seal to separate the diff oil washing off the bearing grease. Cheers John.
