    This episode in controversial in nature and does not necessarily express the opinions of Chef AJ and the producers of this video.
    Dr. Rogers provided all of the research studies that he cited but I am only able to include a few as the TH-cam a limit of 5,000 characters.
    You tube channel “Dr Anthony Jay.” Phd biochemist, expert on blood lipids, like estrogen, videos about the estrogenic effects of soy.
    “Estrogeneration” book by Anthony Jay Phd 2017 cites numerous studies about estrogenic effects of soy, and concerns for possible carcinogenic effects.
    Sheehan (2002) “Goitrogenic and estrogenic activity of soy isoflavones” environmental health perspectives, vol 110, June. → A review paper. Says soy has a frenk estrogenic effect in women. Suggests a link between soy consumption and goiter. In rats, genistein is a/w 80% inhibition of enzyme TPO (Thyroid PerOxidase). Soy (genistein) a/w causing uterine adenocarcinoma in adult mice. In one study of women reviewed, soy caused a lengthening of the menstrual cycle (suggests an estrogenic effect). Says human infant soy intake a/w doubling the prevalence of autoimmune disease. Soy a/w problems with TPO in humans, porcine & bovine suggesting it’s a general problem across mammal species.
    Kenan (2022) “Developmental exposure to phytoestrogens found in soy: new findings and clinical implications” biochem pharmacol, Jan; 195: 114848. “This indicates that in vivo genistein can have significant biological activity when present in concentrations similar to that of estradiol. In infants consuming soy formulas, plasma isoflavone levels are 13,000-22,000 times HIGHER than plasma estradiol levels, a scenario where genistein is likely to activate estrogen receptor mediated responses.” Recommends warning labels be places on infant soy formula products.
    Adgent, Margaret (2018)“Longitudinal study of estrogen responsive tissues and hormone concentrations in [human] infants fed soy formula” j clin endocrinol metab, May 1; 103(5):1899-1909. Those fed soy formula with increased vaginal development, uterine volume and breast development = suggestive of estrogenic effects. Important paper showing DIRECT estrogenic effects in humans.
    Allred (2001) “Soy diets containing varying amounts of genistein stimulate growth of estrogen dependent (MCF-7) tumors” cancer res, Jul 1; 61 (13. Soy with increased growth of HUMAN breast cancer cells (MCF-7) in vivo.
    Allred (2001) “Dietary genistin stimulates growth of estrogen dependent breast cancer tumors similar to that observed with genistein” carcinogenesis, Oct; 22 (10): 1667. Glycoside genistin, like the aglycone genistein, can stimulate estrogen dependent breast cancer cell growth in vivo. Removal of genistin or genistein from the diet caused tumors to regress.
    Zeng (2020) “Effect of soy intervention on insulin like growth factor levels: meta-analysis” phytother res, Jul; 34 (7): 1570-1577. Study showed that soy increased ILGF in humans. (This is of concern, b/c elevated ILGF has been associated with increased risk of diabetes and cancer). I don’t know how much it increased ILGF relative to other foods
    Vemuri (2016) “Glycone rich soy isoflavone extracts promote estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cell growth” nutr cancer, May-Jun; 68 (4): 622-33. Says “several recent reports challenged the health benefits of soy isoflavones and associated them with breast cancer promotion.” Soy isoflavones were studied. Conclusion was “our results suggest that the glyconic daidzin rich soy isoflavone extracts may exert estrogenic effects and promote ER+ breast cancer growth.”
    Duffy (2007) “Implications of phytoestrogen intake for breast cancer” Sep-Oct; 57 (5):260-277. Says “There is in vivo animal data suggesting the phytoestrogen genistein may interfere with the inhibitive effects of tamoxifen on breast cancer cell growth.”
    Velentzis (2008) “Do phytoestrogens reduce the risk of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence?” eur j cancer, Sep; 44 (13): 1799-806. Says “Short term intervention studies suggest a possible stimulatory effect on breast tissue raising concerns of possible adverse effects in breast cancer patients.”

    There are probably no other Doctor that personally reads and takes in so much facts as Dr Rogers. Impressing!!! However it would be very intersting to hear other WFPB Doctors opinion on Dr Rogers statements regarding estrogen/soy/flax. Especially intersting would be comments from Dr McDougall and Dr Greger I think. Maybe possible for chef AJ to arrange interviews with them after they listen to Dr Rogers AND after they have studied the books and papers that Dr Rogers refers to??

      Same. Other docs are saying phytoestrogens from plants are beneficial for us- both as supporting heart health and binding to estrogen receptors and blocking other environmental estrogens which are dangerous. I don’t know though- I’m not a scientist. I am however interested in preventing breast cancer. I thought that overly low estrogen wasn’t good. I guess I am looking for a fuller understanding of the role of estrogen throughout the lifespan for both men and women.

      Fortunately my body has rejected all soy. I wanted the benefits that other plantbased doctors boasted, but the digestive issues weren't worth it. Alfalfa sprouts have phytoestrogens and no one talks about it. I have been sprouting those to get the benefits without ingesting soy.

    Dr Rogers has shared many recent studies showing whether or not soy phyto-estrogens effects breast cancer. I would ask were these studies done on groups who consume meat and dairy? If so a positive cancer result could be explained due to meat and dairy. These studies would need a vegan control group. The low cancer results in Asian rice groups who eat soy would be relavant. Also blue zone populations who do not eat soy, but are cancer free would suggest that Soy is not protective. Rice based Asian groups may have low cancer rates because of not consuming meat and dairy. I have seen that conclusion in other vegan lectures.

    • @lebo1026
      @lebo1026 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      we can't compare cancer rates in blue zones. We do not have stats. Please search "Blue zones" in the National library of medicine. Okinawans (soy eating) - live 98-102. Ikaria (not soy-eating) live 8-9 years longer than Americans.

    • @billparsonsartist8565
      @billparsonsartist8565 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is lots of population studies of and data from Okinawan, Seventh day Adventist (blue zones) starch consuming populations, and controlled studies comparing western diets to various vegetarian diets to strict low fat vegans that show low to zero prostrate and breast cancer in. The data is used by all the doctors whose lecture conclusions l trust to show that soy does not cause cancer and that it possibly does not prevent as well. It's fair to expect modern research to clarify when researchers are using western diet groups.

    I feel like I need further information on the body of research on estrogen. Also , the studies cited are mostly quite old- I have heard doctors say that the prohibition on soy is dated… Other respected doctors are currently claiming phytoestrogens are protective. Would like a deeper understanding of the nature of the studies and the kind of soy studied. (Lots of contaminated and gmo soy here.) I’d also like to know about the quantity of soy used in the studies. Here I am eating soy and flax because I have been told they protect against breast cancer. Dr. Rogers also made a claim about sulfur producing foods contributing to favorable conditions for cancer- that includes allium family and crucifers, both of which are said to protect against cancer. This is a great lecture though. I always learn a lot from Dr. Rogers even if I am left with questions. It’s hard to pull out single causative factors in the diet without controlling the entire diet. We mere mortal s tend to rely on experts to interpret these studies but there are many different kinds of research being referenced- epidemiological, in vitro, animal, and nutrition research of which there are many designs- some better than others. I do listen to Dr. Greger and sometimes he goes into the different kind of research being looked at.

I try to look at each ingredient and howlong it needs to be cooked (carrots and tomato do better heated), cut onions and garlic types 10 mins before cooking, 40 mins for broccoli and cauliflour, but try to keep things as raw as possible in my dishes (usually stews and dahls lol) Things like that. Very interesting presentation. I have three questions: I heard high testosterone levels accelerate aging. Dr Rogers likes to increase his testosterone level but this might not be so healthy after all. Regarding flaxseed: dr Jelinek from Overcoming MS promotes flaxseed oil for MS patients. Would this be an exception? Some studies suggest flaxseed is good for prostate health as well. Quite confused on this topic. Aluminium in water is scary, are swimming pools ok or are they messed up with chemicals containing aluminium to make them look sparkling?

    Here's more papers expressing a concern about a possible role for soy in breast cancer.
    Duffy (2007) “Implications of phytoestrogen intake for breast cancer” ca cancer j clin, 57: 260-277. Says “There is very little human data on the role of phytoestrogens in preventing breast cancer recurrence, but the few studies conducted do not support a protective role.” Says, “several studies have indicated phytoestrogens could play a stimulator role in breast cancer growth.” Says, that at “physiologically relevant levels, genistein stimulates estrogen receptor positive tumors, while at higher (> 10 micromol/L) concentrations, genistein appears to be inhibitory. This atributed to estrogenic properties being predominant at low levels, while at higher levels, other anticancer actions of phytoestrogens predominate… but that “plasma levels of over 10 micromol/L are difficult to achieve with dietary intake.” Article says “Women should be advised against claims that soy is a “safe” estrogen product. And that “processed [soy] products may have detrimental effects compared with soy flour and tofu (sources most commonly consumed in Asian countries… the consumption of high dose isoflavone supplements by women at high risk or breast cancer survivors cannot be recommended. Several recent reviews are in agreement with this recommendation.”

    I've been eating whole none GMO organic black and yellow soy beans to help lower a reoccurring hormone positive breast cancer. So, should I stop doing this?

      I would stop this immediately. Please watch Dr Rogers other videos of the estrogen dangers of soy products. Wish you the best with your diagnosis ❤

    Here's some studies that suggest a reason to be concerned about soy and breast cancer.
    Mueller, Stefan (2004) “Phytoestrogens & their human metabolites on estrogen receptors ER alpha & ER beta” toxicol sci, July; 80 (1) 14-25. This paper is often cited by people claiming that soy only significantly activates ER beta receptors (b for beneficial). But if one actually looks closely at the graphs, there was also a lesser, but similar activation of ER alpha receptors (the bad one = a/w proliferation of breast tissue & breast cancer) (figure 2). The paper had 2 parts. In the 2nd part of the paper, the graph even showed one study where there was possibly more activation of ER alpha by genistein. (Other books I’ve read tend to say that ER beta activation > ER beta. But the point is that ER alpha is still activated) (figure 5).

      Does it make a difference if the soy is organic?

    Here's studies linking soy to infertility, in men. Giahi (2016) “Nutritional modifications in male infertility: systematic review” nutr rev 74, 118-130. Soy shown to “lower semen quality.”
    Chavarro (2008) “Soy food and isoflavone intake in relation to semen quality parameters among men [HUMANS] from an infertility clinic” hum reprod, Nov, 23(11):2584-90. Mass General Hospital. Higher intake of soy foods and soy isoflavones is associated with lower sperm concentration = 41 million sperm per milliliter fewer.

      Asians eating soy seems infertile? All China should do is give men soy instead of choosing a one child policy.

      Did they distinguish between organic vs gmo soy?

      And tell this to the Chinese, before the one-child policy.
