    Not really terrible squat for a half-ton with softer(offroad) springs(Tundra TRD Pro woulda squated down to the bump stops towing this). Good payload and compromise on towing considering it is a 5.3 w/o max tow. Good MPG too for a gasser towing at the limit. Good job, Chevy from a Mopar guy!

    • @hellkitty1014

      @@philtripe I didn't rag on the Toyota. I mentioned the Tundra TRD Pro specifically and its well-documented super squat towing just half the max weight. The rear end is super soft and not ideal for leveled towing. Sure, the Toyotas do last quite a while(they've had 15 years on the same truck to figure it out), but you do indeed have to live with terrible crash ratings, terrible MPG, super dated interior, last decade tech, and lousy driving dynamics.

  • @cintocrunch

    Half ton trucks are really the best all purpose vehicles you can buy today, no surprise they are dominating sales. Need to haul your family in comfort? Need to remodel a bathroom? Need to tow a camper, boat, toys, old diesel pickup? Sure, let’s do all of that and get good mileage and have many luxury features and different style options (chrome, body color, blacked out) available.
    I have to say this gen Silverado was hard to look at initially but it is really growing on me. I know Tommy hates this truck but it’s done everything you’ve asked with no complaints.

    That trailer hitch was the same level as the factory hitch. You guys are creating a lever with that adjustable height hitch since it's not needed. It would help with the squat to put the weight distributing hitch straight into the factory hitch. Truck could also move back to the edge of the flat deck portion would make a big difference.

  • @JustinKingOffroad
    @JustinKingOffroad 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    like another said, set your weight distributing hitch after the load is on the trailer and you'll probably notice much less squat.

    I put air bags on the rear of my trail boss, works pretty well, I’d guess you had more than 950 on the tongue though because when I squat down to 38 inches I have about 1500 on the rear axle. Then I pump up the bags to 30psi and get back to 39.5ish

    • @TheCamaro5
      @TheCamaro5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you need air bags then you are overloading the tongue weight. You may want to go up to a 3/4 ton truck with a class five hitch. they allow up to 1300 tongue weight. your reciever hitch isnt even rated for 950 tongue.

    • @dingakasteve
      @dingakasteve 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheCamaro5 well it was 1500 on the rear axle I had the bed loaded, it’s rated for that much and I went through a weight station to check

  • @badgerpa9
    @badgerpa9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you adjust the weight distribution hitch after you loaded it? Since you where pulling near max weight you do need the tongue weight to be heavy and it will squat that is design to lower the weight and stiffen up the suspension. You need the tongue weight on the Chevy so it stays in contact with the road you do not want the trailer to lift on the Chevy at all or you will not get good traction. Backing it on would have put the diesel engine weight over the trailer axle but since it is a pickup the rear of gunsmoke is relatively lighter and you may not have had enough weight to the tongue. I have max weight towed with my yukon often and getting the weight to the tongue is important to keep the truck tight to the ground and not have the trailer push it around. I would bet you had the rear axle weight maxed out also. Glad you showed this part finally, stay safe.

Empty just the truck I can get easily get 1600km(1000miles) out of a single tank. Can't do that with any gas V8 3/4 or 1 ton. Now as far as loading up to the max tow I dont own a 22k trailer. But I know my 6.7L with the 6 speed(3.55) will still out do the 7.3L with the 10 speed(4.30) just because of the 460lbft advantage(2000 rpm sooner) was test drove a 7.3 w/4.30 in a 2020 f350 and was severely disappointed. Did you actually measure the tongue weight? That much squat, the handling issues makes me wonder. Looked like you just pulled that heavy beast on there so it would fit and strapped it down.

    Got to get a 2500 if you want it to last.

    that 31 year old ford will still be running in 31 years when that 85,000 dollar chevy is rotting in a junkyard after its entire electrical system fails, one after another, starting with blinkers, then the transmission controls, the instrument clusters. The only part of that truck worth anything is the LT engine.

    I will give the chevy its due... but what happens when a single rear wheel tire truck has a flat at say even only forty mph??? Now max tongue weight and some speed along with some smooth turns on the road... when that rear tire goes bang, will you keep it between a yellow on the left and all the right lane while lines used.... will the driver survive it. .... maybe cause its new... about say seventy thousand an no significant repairs on that rig... most definitely not. If it only rips a fender or breaks some glass... what ever that tire will find in its grabbing mode, then super happy but if on its side or top... unacceptable and life is too short for not high experienced drivers. I would like to see because of watching people just leave the driveway with a "What could go wrong" attitude to have to get a endorsement on their licence to drag down our freeways. Kids go out to "find a project" with a uhaul trailer and do they look at weights and limits... no just will it fit on if we bend this fender out or some other child thinking thing. Gunsmoke is beautiful an would look so nice in my drive with that brick nose just a smiling at the world. I would if I owned it swap out the rear axle with a newer F450 rear axle and the disk brake, and some flareside fenders.

  • @lifestyle5795

    That doesn't look safe at all it's dragging too much. That trailer almost hits the dirt just imagine hitting a bump up and down that trailer may hit and cause an accident.
