We just did the Shostakovich 5th two weeks ago, and our conductor told the audience about the composer's struggles with the soviet government and Stalin trying to cancel his music. He also told them that he had had phone calls and emails from patrons saying they wouldn't come if we played the piece, but that it was important not to cave in to that kind of thinking. Bravo to him, and we got huge ovations from the audiences we performed the piece for.

@@AvocadoPear I get your concerns and true they could have been much more delicate to their fanbase - but for the sake of maintaining a free thinking society - it’s important to critically consider - just because someone is not saying exactly what you want them to and How you want them to, does not make them deserving to be labelled as amplifying Russian propaganda. They are not denying the baseless invasion nor ignoring the suffering of the Ukrainians.
Russian propaganda is extremely different to what they’re saying - if we want to go there - for example it’ll be something like claiming the army is holding a peaceful operation to get rid of nazis and protect ethnic Russians - very different from a plead to just “let musicians play” - it’s very dangerous to fall into extremist narrative like this that’s counterproductive to meaningful dialogue , sustainable peace - i hope all sides can refrain from this dangerous territory

And any of their viewers that are also too ignorant go back to the source and read will take this narrative as truth and repeat it regardless of the genuine facts. Sounds like propaganda to me.

NATO suckered Zellinskii into provoking the Russian action, SAME situation as faced Kennedy in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Stoltenberg bribed Zellinskii with billions of dollars to reject President Putin’s offer of a nonaggression pact, if Ukraine would not join NATO. The CIA/DOD/CDC sponsored bioweapons development labs in Ukraine. There is an active Nazi movement in Ukraine complete with torchlight parades and mass rallies. The Azov Battalion, Nazi insignia and beliefs, occupied the Mariupol area and those thugs terrorized its citizens for 8 years. Ukraine has been bombarding the Russian language communities in the Donbas for the last 8 years. Ukraine is the cesspool of Europe, the hub for money laundering, human trafficking and drugs distribution. Zellinskii has banned all political parties except his Nazi party. Zellinskii is imprisoning journalists, who report the truth about what is happening in Ukraine. The billions robbed from US taxpayers to give to the Ukraine kleptocracy is a waste. Many of the weapons sent to Ukraine, an act of war against Russia, will end up on the black market and will probably be used against the US military in the Mideast and Africa. How can anyone support the corrupt regime of Zellinskii?
US has no national interest at stake in Ukraine. NATO and the MIC have selfish interests. There is nothing about Ukraine that merits placing the US at risk of nuclear war with Russia and the resulting catastrophic global destruction.

Perhaps there was a righteous reason behind it (the reason cited was to 'curb potential Japanese espionage'), but in the end it created a lot of pain for the Japanese people. The reason Cardiff canceled the Tchaikovsky concert from the Washington Post:
“As the orchestra’s director, Martin May, explained to me in an email, the philharmonic weighed several factors in deciding to cancel the concert. One was that “a member of the orchestra has family directly involved in the Ukraine situation.” A second was whether it felt right to play “Marche Slave” and the “1812 Overture” - both celebrations of Russian military prowess - as Russia ravages Ukraine. And the musicians didn’t want to offend Ukrainians by playing Tchaikovsky’s “Little Russian” symphony, given that the term has come to be associated with efforts to deny Ukraine a distinct national identity.”
With this info, I feel like it makes a lot more sense why they canceled the show. Pro-Russian military songs aren’t the best look right now.

There are many reasons why russians are not protesting. The immigrants could be afraid of the family and friends back home if they oppose the government. We know that russian can prosecute their family and friends. They might feel powerless, as they were taught that they don’t have any influence on what’s happening in the country. Most Russians hate Nazis, naturally. There is an opposite issue: the Russians who have international ties are forced to side with those Nazis against their own people, to betray the memory of their ancestors who were fighting the original Nazis, now officially celebrated in over a thousand memorials throughout Ukraine.

That's the first time the twoset video brought me to tears. I tried to escape the reality during the last two weeks watching these educating and funny videos, so I am really grateful to you guys for giving me the sense of safety and cheerfulness these days. I am so frustrated to read news everyday and see how the government is killing innocent people, destroying beautiful and peaceful places, how it's killing its own citizens by sending young men to this useless "special opperation", by wrecking its own laws and principles written in the Constitution. I feel lifeless from time to time. I feel so hated by my own government that tries repress everyone who is not following its agenda. The State Prosecution Agency (i don't know how to translate it properly "Генпрокуратура") has requested my uni to provide it with the info about the students and professors who participated in the protests. It also doesn't like my institute in particular, since it has the Liberal Arts programme which is thought to ruin the fucking "traditional values". Two of my profs have left our country, I'm happy and sad for them at the same time. I'm told to leave it too after the graduation if I have a chance, but why should I leave my own home? Why can't the government care about us and stop looking at other countries? Why?
Everyday the laws are getting more severe. One of the ministry workers (ex-president) proposed returning the death sentence a few days ago, and back then I thought, nah, it's impossible, it's impossible, right? Now I think everything can come into power nowadays. Literally everything.
Sorry, if it made you feel uncomfortable, but I just wanted to spill it out, since everyone around me are as tired and shocked as I am.
I believe in the better world where people will do what they love and love what and who they want without hurting each other. Hope, this dream will be true someday.
Love you guys, thank you for what you're doing. Looking forward to the next video!
    Peace!

Cancelling concerts with russian composers, refusing the possibility to take part in competitions for russian young musicians is right. Let me explain why.
All russians are responsible for this war. But they don't understand it. All the cancellations and prohibitions are helping to understand russians that something is not right. These cancellations are helping russians to stop the war.

But russians are not dieing from bombs. We are those who are dieing!!! One girl has lost her hand. She doesn't have hand anymore. She will not play violin. Because of russians.
If the composers will not be cancelled, in the Russian TV they will make the report that everyone loves Russian music and enjoys listening to it. And Russian citizens will feel proud of their country. But pride is not what Russians should feel now. They are terrorists. And they have to feel themselves like terrorists.

They took bomb on the the bomb shelter is a Mariupol drama theater where people from destroyed high-rise buildings hid. 1300 people. We still don't know who is alive.
When you are not living in Ukraine all this situation is not awful. But when you see, how is burning your house you cannot sit still.

In that case, they're right to do that. The piece was meant to celebrate the victory of the Napoleanic War for Russia. Interesting though, Tchaikovsky, unlike other Russian composers at the time, was less interested in the nationalistic aspect of music. That piece was an exception and he still definitely deserves to be heard as well as other Russian composers who likely wouldn't have supported this pointless war.

All russians are responsible for this war. But they don't understand it. All the cancellations and prohibitions are helping to understand russians that something is not right. These cancellations are helping russians to stop the war.
Why are people responsible for the government? Because they are electing government at the elections. According to the last social poll 70 percent of russians support war against Ukraine.
They are destroying our cities with bombs. They had trown already more than 1000 bombs. They took bomb on the maternity hospital. They took bomb on the the bomb shelter is a Mariupol drama theater where people from destroyed high-rise buildings hid. 1300 people. We still don't know who is alive.

Art is art is art but nothing exists in a vacuum. Saying "it is just music" is a superficial way of looking at any subject but especially music since inspiration and historical context play huge roles in its creation. Its similar to the swastika or confederate flag: we don't hang either of those up unless we support their context, which in those cases are criminal/hateful parties. You might like the design before recognizing its context, but when you recognize the context the art should lose its appeal to you since you are inadvertently supporting what it represents. I will admit that it comparing russian music composed by dead people to the confederate flag is a different scenario, but regardless you are supporting a country violating international law and committing war crimes. This is because we are in the context of a war, right here, right now. We aren't cancelling history because we don't like history, we are choosing not to support a militaristic state by rejecting any media from them and by simaltaneously recognizing the efforts of the Russian people who are staunchly opposed to the war. Think of that figure skater who was kicked off the team for not opposing the war. Its the same principle, anyone who thinks that Russia should be in Ukraine should not be given a platform in which to spread their propaganda and militaristic ideas.

Forcing people to make a public declaration putting them at odds with a regime that doesn’t hesitate to persecute, imprison and even poison people that disagree with them is essentially condemning them to be exiled until that regime is changed. And Putin has even had dissidents poisoned who were living outside Russia. A change of regime in Russia can’t happen too soon, but may not happen at all. For context, the piece that Cardiff Philharmonic removed from their programme was the 1812 Overture. As Tchaikovsky wrote this to commemorate a successful Russian defence to an invasion (ie a military victory), I think it is understandable that it was removed. Ideally, I think it should have been replaced it with a different, more suitable piece of Tchaikovsky rather than music by non-Russian composers. HOWEVER I think a large part of the blame also lies on news agencies, who through attention-grabbing headlines such as the one in this video imply and propagate the idea of censoring of all things Russian.

The "we're gonna force you to overthrow your government by creating deficiency of food, technology and meds for you" tactic is pretty much a blackmail. People generally don't like being blackmailed. So it's not helping. Also, those that managed to escape during the first 2 weeks are now stranded on the foreign streets with no money because visa&mastercard blocked their access to their bank accounts. Oh yeah, I can see how that creates fury and uproar. But not the one you would expect.

I think this entire situation was blown way out of proportion thanks to sensationalist reporting from the daily mail that removed necessary context and got some random philharmonic orchestra sent a barrage of hate for making what most people would consider a pretty reasonable decision given the circumstances.

Just now I finish practicing my flute and take a break then ask my fellow twosetter about the new upload...then one twosetter said it the Russian Composer removed from the concert the I was shock and exclaimed ..I bet it's Tchaikovsky 😭😭😭 then I continue writing my piece while thinking how sad it is to know about it. I recently seen it from Twitter and I makes me so sad . Why politics been so harsh to composers who is not even alive then tend to remove them immediately. Where's humanity. My heart breaks a little because of this. 💔🥺😔 😭😭😭

All the musicians and composers I know are lamenting this. Like others have said, they had nothing to do with anything.

I went to a performance of Shostakovich Symphony 5 a few weeks ago, and I’m so glad they didn’t cancel the performance. They dedicated the performance to Ukraine and played the Ukrainian national anthem after the intermission, which was very powerful. Shostakovich lived under the same terror and tyranny that people are still experiencing today, and cancelling programs from these composers achieves nothing.

Im russian, living in america. My grandfather was a russian composer (Boris Tishchenko), I'm in a band all of us are russian. None of us want the war, all of us love our culture. Ive been harrassed in school, and I cant even tell anyone where I'm from without embarrassment, now some of my favorite composers are being cancelled for the actions of corrupt government. I just don't even know what to think of it anymore.

Singer Anna Netrebko, violinist Repin, canceled for "not denouncing Putin."
But what consequences would their families face in Russia, if these artists were outspoken? Their speech is not free. It is wrong to put artists in this position.

guess there's not gonna be any nutcracker ballets for a while
But even with the war, it's not the composers, or the people for practiced for years just to compete in a competition fault. The war is just taking everything away from classical musicians

It’s taking even more from Ukrainians and conscripted soldiers…. don’t worry, the Composers and music will outlast conflict.

Not true though. The orchestra never said they are taking away all Tchai pieces

I can understand that. Until very recently, no Israeli orchestras played Wagner. They refused due to his anti-Jewish writings that so much influenced Hitler.
No classical Russian composers are guilty on what their government is doing now. However, some of the modern Russian classical musicians do share responsibility for this when they gave public support to the Kremlins war and persecuting the dissent.
