That's the beauty of Chico Buarque's poetry: even if you don't know portuguese, the storytelling is SO GOOD that you understand perfectly what he wants to communicate with the song.
    Sugestion: listen to "Cálice"

    Nice, Saeed!
I suggest listening other Chico Buarque songs like 'Geni e o Zepelin' (it talks about a transgender woman who is ostracized in her town. Note that it is a song written almost 50 years ago and could not be more modern).
'Pedaço de Mim' (a song about a mother's grief whose son was killed by the military dictatorship).
Also listen to 'Pedro Pedreiro,' 'João e Maria,' 'Caro Amigo,' 'Roda Viva,' 'Olho nos Olhos,' 'Cio da Terra.'
I also recommend other national singers, such as Milton Nascimento (the most Brazilian voice there is), Caetano Veloso, Ney Matogrosso (the man who literally inspired Kiss), Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil.

Brazilian music itself is always beautiful and soulful. The artist tells a sad reality that exists in many countries and is almost impossible to get out of it for a better future.
And yes, it's wise to never judge a person if you don't know the situation deeply , an the same in everything: it's easy to judge or write nonsense in social networks when you don't know the real truth and you only rely on fake news...

    Hi Saeed,
I don't know if through the translation it is possible to understand that the song Meu Guri is the speech of an illiterate mother who sees a photo of her dead son in the newspaper, but doesn't understand that he is dead. She thinks his photo is in the newspaper because he finally managed to become famous. "Olha aí meu gurí!" "Look at my boy. This is my boy!"
Because he is a child, in the photo, he has a stripe over his eyes, and only the initial letters of his name appear.
He did not become an adult, he was killed as a child.
This song is pure pain !
Chico Buarque is very good at writing in feminine terms.
I loved your reaction, you are very sensitive and gave a great interpretation.

"There are two parts of these lyrics that really caught me. The first one is when the mother says he even brings her documents so she can finally be identified. That really makes me sad because it shows how tough life has been for her, to the point where she never had the chance to have a simple ID. I assume she was probably illiterate as well. The second thing that broke my heart is that in the final part of the song, I could understand what the chorus was about. When she says:
‘He arrives printed, headline, portrait, with a blindfold over his eyes-caption and initials. I don’t understand these people, Mister. Making such an uproar. The boy in the woods, I think he’s laughing; I think he’s beautiful just lying there From the beginning. Didn’t I say so, Mister? He said he was getting there!’
In this part, she is looking at the papers with her son printed out, lying in the woods, probably killed by the police, and she believes her son has finally made it without realizing that he had been killed as a criminal. A beautiful song with heartbreaking and profound lyrics portraying the reality of many poor families in the brazilian slums."

Morto? Barra pesada...

I don't know if you got it or not, but at the end, the boy was killed: all stanzas begins with "Chega"what means arrive - the last one is something like "arrives printed (in the news), high lights, portrait with blindfold and initials", the way dead under aged people are referred in news. The pictures in the video are pretty odd in this respect.

    Analysis of the Song
    1. Social Context: The song portrays the reality of many Brazilian families living in extreme poverty. The “guri” (boy) in the song is a young man who, due to a lack of opportunities, ends up getting involved in illegal activities to support his family.
    2. Maternal Perspective: The lyrics are narrated from the mother’s point of view, who sees her son as a hero, despite being aware of his criminal activities. She tries to justify her son’s actions and is proud of him, even when he brings stolen items home.
    3. Irony and Tragedy: Chico Buarque uses irony to highlight the tragedy of the situation. The mother is proud of her son’s achievements, but these achievements are the result of crimes. The lyrics culminate with the boy’s death, which is portrayed almost innocently by the mother, who believes he has finally found peace.
    4. Social Critique: The song is a critique of a society that marginalizes the poor and pushes them into criminality. Chico Buarque exposes the lack of opportunities and social inequality that lead many young people to follow dangerous paths.
    Structure of the Song
The song is composed of several verses that narrate the boy’s life from birth to death. Each verse reveals a little more about the relationship between mother and son and the harsh reality they live in.
First Verse: The mother describes the birth of her son and the difficulties they faced from the beginning.
Intermediate Verses: The mother talks about the gifts her son brings home, which are actually stolen goods. She tries to see the positive side, believing he is working hard to improve their lives.
Final Verse: The mother describes her son’s death almost naively, without realizing the gravity of the situation. She continues to see him as a hero, even in death.
    Conclusion
“O Meu Guri” is a powerful song that combines tenderness and social critique. Chico Buarque uses the mother’s narrative to show the complexity of family relationships in contexts of poverty and criminality, while also criticizing the society that perpetuates these conditions.

My dear, from Brazil, allow me to explain a little about Chico Buarque. First, the video you reacted to: Construction. In addition to the social denunciation of the working conditions of construction workers, I need to mention the literary elegance where the end of each verse ends with a word whose intonation is proparoxytone. Only a person with a deep knowledge of the Portuguese language would make this poetic "construction".
As for this song, "my boy" is a social denunciation of the lack of formal education suffered and, to a certain extent, still suffers from the less privileged segments of society. The boy becomes a thief and his mother cannot imagine this. (by google tradutor)

The beauty of this music (and it is BEAUTYFULL) is the fact that the sttory teller, the mother of the Guri, is so naive... she just loves her son and she cant see what he is really doing (robery), she thinks he is working and geting good, climbing up life, etc... and at the end, she doesnt even noticed he died... "i dont understand all this people making such a fuss" about the guri on the newspaper... dead... but she thinks now he is famous, as he said, "he will get there one day".
And the true beauty of that it this thing, this naive thing... thats not so uncommon.. not really.

Also, I think that I always ask myself when I hear this song... "would you tell the mother (who is telling you such a story in a such naive and proud way) what is really going on here?"... hard to answer this one.
