The reason why you should not put chopsticks straight down in a bowl of rice, is because it represent the burning of incense. This is what Asians do to pay respect to the dead. If you ever go to a temple all incense are placed in a container filled with uncooked rice. Hope this helps.

When eating food, rice especially, one should not ever stick forks and spoons into the food because it's a calling for an invintation for spirits to come eat with you. But I know it's just superstition.... or is it?

Yes, not just chopsticks. However in my own house it is OK because I am not afraid of spirit or ghost or sort of things. Like human, most of spirits are good and people actually eat the offering after the ritual is done. So what's the point?

Well I like to add its not just a reminder of death. When we prepare meals for our ancestors or dead people, we put chopstics or spoons straight down to the bowl of rice. It means for dead people. You wouldnt want to be treated like a dead person. Thats what it is

I did speak rudely to her once. I told her not to call me or my mother easy. I was invited back the following weekend and told to get on my hands and knees with my forehead touching the floor. She then asked me to bow up and down at her feet and repent, saying things and asking me to recite them. Saying it was "cultural". I was so angry I cried. She laughed the entire time. I had a relationship with her for years after that. I no longer do.
I have 6 siblings, and I'm the only one whose wife is white. My parents adore her the most out of all their sons and daughters in laws. It depends on the parents.

im in an inter racial marriage with a Chinese man and yes....its kinda hard....but the love is strong and Asians strongly believe in love, so they will stay strong to the relationship.....people mess up...everyone does, but still, the relationship stays strong ^^ I am very happy with my husband :D when im sad, he makes me laugh and tells me " you see, your best when you smile " ^^ best thing EVER! .....I havent met my mother in law in person yet....over the phone she is like " Ni how * waves and giggles * " O.O she knows english my husband says......uh....lol im scared to meet his mom.....what if she don't like me in person DX< nuuuuhhh!!!!!
I believe that most Chinese mothers-in-law treat their daughters-in-law like their own daughters (and that means very well-treated and parents usually treat daughters better than sons). Just a hint, when you meet her, give her a very warm, loving hug (like you hug your own mother) and that would probably break down the ice pretty fast. If you just stand there, aloof and unapproachable, she might think that you are like those typical (stereotypes, of course) western children who will abandon their own parents (and throw them into old folks' home) after marriage. As stereotypical as it may sound, the prospect/thought of foreign daughters-in-law not wanting them might frighten these mothers-in-law.

I feel sad that my scottland gf doesnt understand asian guy are more trustworthy in relationship. What I am most curious is did you had to deal with the stereotype of "Asia is a society where the husband is like a King and wife is like a servant", I know for a fact this stereotype is invented by a bunch of white supremacists, who believe white people are superior. But, due to there are still some limitation in contact (despite more frequent now) so many people in the west get manipulate by this stereotype. (which, I don't even get it, because as a social science research, I know for a fact the idea of "husband like King and wife like servant" is in fact an idea from the Christian bible and all statistic show, ultra conservation western christian family got higher rate of abuse to women, as a result) I would image, so many parents would have a heart attack, when their daughter bring home a guy who is Asian. (Which I guess is also one of the reason, nearly all white/asian cross race couple is white man and asian women) Whenever I see a white woman & asian men couple, that is always the first thing I want to ask them, did your family oppose it, due to the influence of the stereotype of "Asia is a society where the husband is like a King and wife is like a servant" and fear you becoming a victim of abuse, as a result

I have to add, I have two coworkers who are also Asian American (I am also, half actually, but my features peg me as a Ca Portugese or Basque. Mom is Filipina, born in Visalia Ca and Pop is actually from Ireland. Ennis County Clare). 1 Korean and 1 from Vietnam. Asian people see us, they always ask my coworkers why they work the job that we do (We're Firefighters for a large Ca County). It's like our jobs aren't good enough for Asians... Weird huh? Like we're supposed to be accountants, business people, professional types.
