    Totally works - I've save SO much money by reshaping my brushes with Ivory - it pays not to be lazy!

    Hello, thank you for your response.
    I am a 71 year old painter and I have always used Ivory soap on my small brushes and Dawn liquid on my larger ones.
    Now I, of course put a brush into paint thinner to "break" it.
    I put Dawn into a wide mouthed cup. I rinse the brush in water and scoop up the Dawn and put it on the Ivory bar over and over until no paint is visable. My large brushes go up into the Dawn and into my hand until clean.
    Brushes don't last as they once did. But with this God awful inflation, we need to conserve our brushes as long as possible.
    When I was in my 20's, A tube of paints by was $1-3.00.
    The same tube is up to $15-$30!!!
    Thank you again for your smart tips!

      Cindy, I think you will find Murphys oil soap less expensive and more effective for keeping your brushes in good shape.

    I do not think we have Ivory soap in the UK but I do use Oliva which is made with olive oil. It works beautifully on my Rosemary Ivory brushes which are synthetic. Gives my filberts and flats a very sharp edge.

    Thanks for taking the time for this tip. I use the same method but instead of using the clip at the end, I just wrap the brush hairs with tissue and bend the tip of the tissue at the tip of the hairs to the rear (it produces a straight tip on the brush) Thanks again. love your quick tips.

    I could not find a Murphy oil soap down there in the Europe. So, I did an experiment using Fairy dishwasher. Absolutely works for me!
    Thank you Dianne!
    However, the very last step, with the 'no creamy soap', left me with a concern.
    No matter how hard I'm using my fingers to get rid of the dry soap residues, some will rest.
    Will it affect mediums+oil paints?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The soap you are using must have a softener in it. I don't know what your equivalent of our Ivory soap might be, but you might research that.
      Perhaps rinsing your brush with a refined mineral spirits such as Gamsol would be a good idea before using it to paint with. The solvent will take out any softener or oil that might retard the drying of your paint.

    Thank you for this thorough demonstration on cleaning bristle brushes Diane. Very helpful!! Do you have any advice for synthetic or sable brushes?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sables should be cleaned with soap and water. I'm not sure whether Murphy's is a good idea for them. Synthetics vary according to their materials. Consult the manufacturers' recommendation for them. As a general rule, I don't use synthetic for oils, only for watercolor so I never have to worry about removing dry paint from them. But I for watercolor brushes, it's a better idea to rinse them well and shape them damp.

    Thank you for such good tips..
    I did want to tell you that Murphy's soap destroys synthetic bristles.
    I would love to know how to flatten small chistle brush edges that are synthetic.???

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cindy, I've never had that happen. I've been using it to clean my synthetics for years.
      If you abuse your synthetic brushes by scrubbing too roughly with them or pushing too hard against the painting surface, they will lose their integrity. Also, cheaper quality synthetics will bite the dust quickly. The method of reshaping that I show in Quick tip 341 will restore their chisel quality if the brush is not permanently damaged.

    hi Dianne thank you so much. I paint acrylic... and I see you get rid of the soap in the last step is by flicking the brush with your finger. how do I sure there is no more soap on it? What if i paint and there is still some soap on it? shall I actually wash the brush in water at the last step? thank you so much again!!!!!

    • @burningdaylights
      @burningdaylights 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dianne might tell you differently, but water should be fine with acrylic, since they're water-based. It would be just like when you get a new brush with stiff bristles--I always wash them to loosen them up so the paint can get in there, as opposed to just sitting on the surface of the brush.

    I'm so sorry to ask so many questions. This should be a quick one. If it's okay to clean my glass palette with alcohol, is it okay to use alcohol on my brushes when I'm done with them for the day? Again, sorry for my many questions!

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suze, don't apologize for asking questions. That's one reason why I do this.
      Yes, using alcohol to clean your palette works well. It's another one of those practices I share with the late Richard Schmid.

    • @susannerauch8237

      @@IntheStudioArtInstruction I've also found that I can get some paint stains out of my clothes if they're not too old. LOL I am a messy painter. I'm guessing, also, that it wouldn't hurt my brushes if I rinse them with alcohol when I'm done for the day?

    Hello Dianne, Please could you do a tutorial on easels? I’ve painted with watercolour for many years and am finding painting on an upright (vertical) easel very awkward. I know the reasons behind painting on an upright easel, but those reasons also apply to watercolour, so is there any reason I can’t paint in oils on my tilted drawing board?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Genny, there are so many easels on the market, I'm not sure I could do them justice in a Quick Tip, but I can suggest here that you get a watercolor easel. Julian makes a nice one like pictured here at Jerry's www.jerrysartarama.com/jullian-rexy-watercolor-easel . They also make a watercolor field easel like the one here - www.dickblick.com/products/blick-studio-aluminum-watercolor-field-easel-by-jullian/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fq%3Dwatercolor%2520easels .
      You can make a field easel for a camera tripod like show in this video: th-cam.com/video/IIbMOOOYwtc/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this helps.

    Great tip ! Q: Are you diluting the Murphy soap or using full strength ?

  • @cindyoverall8139
    @cindyoverall8139 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have always used ivory soap to clean my small flat brushes, but no matter how rinsed they are, the feral end becomes enlarged and splays the edges. I tried the clamp way and that result was uneven. Any suggestions?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Murphy Oil Soap conditions the brushes as well as cleans them. Also reshaping them while damp with a bit of hand soap in them helps, too.

  • @miralaartist1916

    I hope this isn't silly question.. but what color would be complementary to brown. Would it be considered if the brown is more yellowish to add purple in it etc?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No question is silly. Brown is not a hue, but depending upon in which direction it is leaning is usually in the yellow to red hue range on the color wheel. So the complement is the opposite of the hue a particular brown registers on. The be more specific, some browns appear more yellow, some more orange and some more red.
