This is one of the classics in jazz composition. Every band should study and play it. It uses rock rhythm effectively, has great structure, the characteristic Thad voicings. It is versatile: here they opened it up for solos.
One of my favorite big bands.I have almost all of the records that they made.I'm glad for the old days and "you tube" all they do for this earth of music lovers such as I .I can always come here and get a blessing of music or seeing things from decades ago, thanks again and always for the love the comes courtesy of you tube.Love you.
the Sax lick at 4:19 grooves so hard!!! My favorite part of this song. And who else thinks that the Trombone player at 3:40 looks like Paul from the Late show with Letterman?
I play 1st tenor in a extracurricular middle school jazz band and we just starting working on this song along with Count Bubba's Revenge, its going to be a fun couple months. :D
Yeah, without question it's Jon Faddis on lead trumpet (and cowbell). Funny, there's a Kenton video where Jay Saunders (lead trumpet player) is playing cowbell. Never realized it was a common double.
(l to r) Jim Bossy, Jon Faddis, Steve Furtado, Cecil Bridgewater, tp; (l to r) Cliff Heather, Jimmy Knepper, Billy Campbell, Quentin "Butter" Jackson, tb; (l to r) Billy Harper, Ed Xiques, Jerry Dodgion, Ron Bridgewater, Pepper Adams, saxophones; Roland Hanna, piano; George Mraz, bass; Mel Lewis, drums; Thad Jones, conductor.
I love the fact that a lot of great jazz performances on You Tube come from Japanese TV.

Bassist is George Mraz, I believe ~
Can't beat thad! I think that there is some weird flanging thing going on with the audio - just thought I would mention
Wright on, Rayburn!
Is that Roland Hanna on piano?
That's crazy. We're a 10-man jazz band at my high school and we just started working on this. We're not doing to well .-.
The great bassist Jiri "George" Mraz is a Czech.
Jon Faddis on lead trumpet, right?
"Inside the Score" author's last name is Wright.

"Count Bubba's Revenge" and "Us" in a middle school jazz band? Damn dude, bravo!
Jon Faddis is probably about 24 or 25 in this.
This was made in 1974, so Faddis would have been 20 or 21 (b. July 1953).
@@billkirchner6738 Wow
Don't mess up your gourd part!

It looks like something's coming out of thad's mouth at 0:42
