hey i wanted to add more context to the 5050 situation: the girls who are suing weren't the issue/greedy. all 3 members who are still pursuing legal action suffered severe health conditions: aran's stomach issues were neglected to the point she required surgery and was at risk of developing cancer, the forced dieting caused sio to experience kidney issues to the point she was nearly put on dialysis and saena can no longer have periods without heavy medication due to malnutrition. this has all been corroborated with doctors notes dating back years since the signed with attrakt. keena was the only member who didn't suffer extreme health consequences plus she was a trainee for the longest having nearly 10 years of trainee debt and mentioned having dozens of part time jobs to not be homeless. while she has dropped her role in the current suit, at no point has she denied the other girls claims and probably cannot afford the legal fees to fight attrakt. another issue is that siahn (the groups producer and head of the givers, a company that attrakt subcontracted to train and produce 5050) encouraged the girls who were already suffering under attrakt to file suit and that warner would support them. only after filing suit did the members' lawyers find out not only did siahn (allegedly) commit fraud by forging keena's signature on a contract that would reduce her profits from cupid to close to nothing, but it was staff under the givers and not just attrakt who had been abusing the members. basically the members thought they could trust siahn over the attrakt ceo and only after suing did they find out he was also abusing them financially. it looks like siahn thought he could get warner music to buy out 5050's contract from attrakt and he could profit from it but the girls lawyers discovered his own shady behaviour. three members are still suing attrakt not just because of the abuses they faced but because there is about 1 billion won that was assigned to their trainee debt that cannot be accounted for. the ceo was fighting their termination suits for months until this last month when they suddenly terminated their contracts. i would guess that this is because he has a long history of mistreatment of idols and suspicious financial activity. when the termination of their contracts were announced, the members lawyers have said they will still pursue legal action because of the lack of financial transparency.

i really don't like it when any artist in a group is left off of a song because there should literally be space for everyone in a song, whether its backing vocals, bridges, refrains, etc. it just seems like such a slap in the face to the individuals who are left off :(
I remember watching the left eye documentary and seeing her say how she was tired of them always cutting her rap verses out of a song and not letting her feature with artist who wanted just her on their track and always making her rap in the baby voice whenever she wanted to do a more serious deeper flow. As you can hear in (U know what's up) i feel like had she been respected more in the group she would've never wanted to go solo.

The racism of cutting Left Eye's rap infuriates me to this day. However, when they play Waterfalls on "white radio" I always just rap her verse and pretend I'm in my old talent shows. it is frustrating to not see Left eye rap as much, but I think the group was trying for crossover appeal, so less "hood" if you will. If you listen to Left Eye's rap, that stuff wouldn't have help with the exposure. Sometimes I even looked at her sideways with the lyrical content. but I'm sure she was gettign heat from hood peopel for her raps to be harsher. We see that in all groups really even the boybands (the bad boy is the one who raps). Whatevsss. I didn't know that about Victoria. She sounded well when the first album first came out and they sang acapella a lot. Neerves probably got to her. I was always pissed she didn't sing "Out of your Mind" or Innocent Girl or I wish on the reunion tour. Such a slap in the face unless she had bad deals contractwise for those songs...Destiny's Child you can hear Kelly as second lead in the choruses.... Letoya adn Latavia sang high and low so unfortunately those are for blending not for lead. I wish they got to be heard. They are unsung heroes and helped B2k and 3lw when someone wasn't allowed to sing....
The Pussycats dolls is such a funny case bc for years everyone always gave Nicole shit for being the face of the group when it’s purely just how record executives marketed her and the group, it’s like kpop companies picking a favorite out of their groups and marketing the popular member to be the face, plus I don’t blame melody for not wanting to come back, she wanted to be a singer in her own right and was underutilized and was basically designed to be Nicole’s understudy/backup singer and then the other girls just danced, 90% of the songs was Nicole with melody doing some runs and adlibs in the back
People gave Nicole shit for it because she always pretends like the other girls were lazy and didn’t WANT to record, but we now know that melody did guide vocals for half the songs until Nicole was available to do the actual recording, and that melody was hired to be lead singer. Nobody is mad Nicole was chosen as the focal point, it’s how she twists the narative to make herself a victim for having to do more vocals, while also trying to make it seem like she’s more important than everyone else.
it's sad that left eye was cut off from many of TLC's songs, her talent as a rapper and lyricist is out of this world. especially with fanmail, she only appears on 4 songs on that album and not even on No Scrubs which is their biggest hit from that time. You could only hear her rap when the music video came on tv or if the radio happened to play the rap version which wasn't likely. I can understand where her frustrations came from
TLC I actually prefer all of the rap versions of their major singles. I hate how the label peddled them as remixes tho... Left eye verses were introspective, unique and fun. Aint 2 proud 2 beg has a full rap version that really showcased her skills. She definitely was a top female mc and glad ppl even today know she really rapped on alot of those songs.
Plus the whole fiftyfifty situation is probably the biggest fumble in kpop history, probably one of the few 4th gen groups that had members that could actually SING and not screeching into the microphone, they had a viral hit and was featured in one of the biggest movies out this year, companies fumbling talent like this will always piss me off 😭

Call me uncultured but it feels like Little Mix is the only mainstream western girl group that has able to give equal opportunities to each one of the members in the group to shine while at the same time able to pull great vocal harmonies as a unit. Everyone knows that each one of the members (while also includes Jesy) is a good vocalist and they are/were given solid line distributions to achieve that. I believe that is one of the major reasons that has kept them together without much dramas in comparison to what had happened surrounding other mainstream groups (i get the messiness surrounding the departure of Jesy but that's on a different matter).

For those who want to know: FIFTY FIFTY had 3 members leaving due to horrible and stressful legal fights with their CEO. Keena was the only member that stayed and returned to the company, dropping her side of the lawsuit. ATTRAKT, FIFTY FIFTY's company, is now recruiting 3 new members as we speak. Not sure how they'll go about the award shows season. It must be awkward, because neither Keena or the 3 new girls have a part in the viral English version of Cupid.

The man who created them put tons of time and money into them and when they got big, they basically were trying to get out, because I think they weren’t making the money and deals they wanted. I do get they should be payed well, but the guy put so much on the line for them. And the reason they were going to leave the company was a former producer was promising them more money and such to leave. But I can’t recall where I learned this information.
After Destiny's Child lineup change, Beyonce admitted that LeToya and LaTavia weren't on 9 of the songs on TWOTW specifically Bug A Boo. But she said Kelly & her did the vocals not by choice. It makes me wonder who was keeping the other two from singing on the records and how the hand was forced to maintain their "roles".

They have some really great songs. But like all girl groups put together on a reality t.v show they were doomed to fall due to poor management and lack of trust. One member Dawn Richard recently talked about how you put five different girls from different backgrounds who have been for the last year competing against each other on a reality competition and then tell them "hey your gonna be buddies and sing and perform together" it's just not gonna gel that easily. It didn't help that different people in management were telling each girl different things breaking trust and connection within the group.
Not that I am a fan of Diddy at ALL, but if you knew a bit more about Danity Kane, he was spot on with Aubrey. Aubrey wanted to be the Nicole Schwarzinger of Danity Kane, and he was absolutely spot on about how she chose her style to be- big hair and sexual looks. She owns it now, but it was very vital that he pointed that out early on. He created a group, but but she wanted to be the star. When she didn't get that, she checked out. She did the same thing on BET's The Encore- a show with former R&B girl group members (and Nivea, who was always a solo artist) form a supergroup. Aubrey was the first to go because she didn't get to do every she wanted. To her credit- although they all signed off on it- it's a very weird situation to be in when you go from competing with girls to being in a group with them.

But anyone paying attention knew Aubrey always had a flamboyant personality and was only holding back for the sake of T.V in contrast to her only developing it after fame as Diddy made it sound like. Aubrey was always a team player despite upper management constantly trying to pit the girls against each other. She always spoke for the quieter voices in the group and made concerns heard she started going into other ventures because she didn't want to put up with Diddys B.S. And you can't blame her for doing that because other girls also started to do it gradually *cough cough D.woods.
The Jai Ho situation with the Pussycat Dolls is a lot more common now. Most recently with the Trolls soundtrack single Better Place that is credited to both Justin Timberlake and NSYNC.
The situation with PCD is so frustrating because the other girls are actually really great singers, and they each have a different flavor to their vocals. Carmit has a deep and sultry tone, while Ashley's is very soft and pure. Kimberly has a funky style with a more nasal tone, and Jessica put in some serious work on her vocal delivery and has a very ethereal and emotive style. Add to this Melody's strong vocal power and Motown inspired tone, along with Nicole's powerhouse vocals and versatility, and you could have a dynamic group where everyone gets an opportunity to shine. Instead we got Nicole and some other girls.

Lisas rap verses have been almost erased off the market. I didnt even know she had ACTUAL verses until I saw their live performances because all the versions of their songs on streaming platforms dont have her raps in them. That just feels so foul I would feel absolutely cheated.
Controversial opinion: I think it's fine if certain group members are left off a song if the song sounds better as a result. I just think they should be in rotation on the album: if it's a ballad, somebody whose a stronger vocalist should step in, whereas if it's a dance banger better dancers should be in spotlight. Unfortunately, this strategy is rarely pursued in showbiz.
This is a good idea for album tracks but not for album singles. Especially in the late '90's to the mid 2000's, what you showcase on the song is the element that will determine your contribution in the song. Everyone needs to stand out on the song while at the same time coming together well as a unit. K-pop actually does a pretty good job at highlighting this despite some failed ones.
there's another song i would add which is 'hi high' by loona. one of the members, haseul only got 0.7 seconds of lines when the song was basically over
People don't know that before Lisa passed, she was not only trying to go solo but transitioning into a whole new persona (one of her alter egos as she called it) called N.I.N.A. She was signed to Death Row (she was dating Suge and was good with some of the artists) while she was still contractually obligated to do a TLC album (something the labels and the producers purposely dragged out most likely out of spite for everything that happened with TLC as a whole). 3D was gonna be TLC's last album indefinitely because it was the last one they were contractually obligated to do (part of why Lisa's death has always been fishy to me). This would leave room for Lisa to fully debut as N.I.N.A. After 3D, Tboz and Chilli had a show where they found a girl to potentially replace Lisa, but nothing came of it (cuz it was more than liekly just something for them to get some money from). Chilli released some solo material and had her own reality show afterwards. Funny enough, T-Boz was the one I remember doing more "prominent" solo projects after CrazySexyCool as she had a whole song and remix on the Rugrats in Paris soundtrack (the scene where Angelica is in first class on the plane kicking the guy's seat). Everyone did, but I remember seeing more of Tionne's work during TLC's hiatus before Fanmail. Some speculate each members' solo projects were purposely overshadowed by the label so no one would think TLC was going solo (even though somethings were just side "ventures" anyway). The label probably wanted to endure the girls stayed true to those twisted contracts. I'll forever be a huge TLC fan- especially being from ATL, but they have done some shady things between Lisa and their treatment of Crystal (the OG "C" and founder of TLC). It's a reason the family doesn't always get along well with them (which is even sadder because T-Boz and Lisa were cousins by marriage), but they have been through a lot as well from the get-go with the industry.

Victoria only sings the "are you for real" in the second verse (in both the album and single version) of Wannabe but she isn't on the album versions of 2 Become 1, Mama and If You Can't Dance. Which means she only sings (barely) in 7/10 tracks of their debut album. It's hard to hear her in Last Time Lover and Something Kinda Funny but she's definitely there.

She was locked in her house and the girls were calling her while writing and recording. But, since it was over the phone it was difficult and she spent the whole time crying. She sings more on their sophomore and last albums.

Jumpin Jumpin is all Beyonce. Beyonce stacked her vocals since she had the range to sing all parts and create the harmonies. It was actually a practice dating back to Girls Tyme where they would send only Beyonce into the studio to stack vocals whenever they wanted to save money on studio time.
I think it was shady that the record label basically had Nicole record the album behind the other dolls backs. It feels like they used the group to try and launch Nicole’s solo career
hii, tysm for your videos!!! so yeah, there's a lot of girlbands and even boybands that have terrible distribution. There's these examples of Fifth Harmony on the 2 singles of their debut album Reflection BO$$ and Sledgehammer, where Dinah's not singing kinda nothing. She said she "might" be in the background vocals (not even herself knows) - these kind of channels (wich are awesome btw) had made vocal analysis for both songs and you can't even hear her (in BO$$ is kinda audible, in Sledgehammer is nowhere to be found). There's another example for this group in Worth It, where Lauren doesn't sing. Dinah said she sings the chorus, but she's not audible at all. Chorus is just Camila and Normani, and both also have their own solos. In other korean girl groups, for example BLACKPINK and TWICE, there's always someone that doesn't have much lines. In case of TWICE, they're a lot of members, but the one's with most lines are Nayeon and Jihyoo (sorry if it's misswritten). In BLACKPINK's case, Jennie is the main rapper, Lisa the main dancer, Jisoo the visual and Rosé the main vocalist, so i don't get why Jennie and Lisa, wich are the rappers, kinda always get more lines than Rosé and Jisoo, wich are the main singers. Rosé saves herself with her iconic background vocals, but Jisoo almost always gets the least lines. Also, the group is so centered in Jennie... - I think it'd be interesting to analize. In case of boybands, cases that I know are the Backstreet Boys and One Direction, groups that also haven't the best line distribution. Backstreet Boys for example, had the "background vocalist" role, which was given to Howie D (high harmonies) and Kevin (low harmonies). They almost never had solos in their first projects, so the known artists in there are Brian, Nick and AJ. Even Nick in some songs was left out bcs he was a child and maturing his voice. A clear example is I'll Never Break Your Heart, where only AJ and Brian have solos. And for One Direction, Niall and Louis where always left out for distributions, specially Louis. They had almost everytime the least lines, and the band was centered in Harry & Liam (not even Zayn, their best vocalist). So, i'd request (if you can and want) a part 2 for the girlgroups section, and another for boybands thx for reading❤❤❤
I know 2NE1 (this collaboration was likely recorded during their time with Will.I.Am on making their English debut album in the early 2010’s) were featured on a Will.I.Am track called Gettin’ Dumb, but it was quite obvious that only Cl & Park Bom (who are the most fluent in English in the group) sung on the final recording, where Dara and Minzy weren’t included (despite their pretty good English on tracks like Can Nobody [English version] & and Dara in later lyrics on Ugly). It’s also happened on 2NE1’s track Goodbye without Minzy, because she left the company and it was basically a goodbye song as 2 of the 3 remaining members were leaving as well. And with Fifty Fifty, it was actually the girls who ruined themselves. Their original company actually put a lot of money and time into them, and so when they went big, he actually did deserve compensation for how much work he put into the group. The girls and I think a former producer were trying to break away from the original company to make more money, I think. Usually k-pop idols do get payed crap, especially small companies, but this was obviously the original company getting screwed over by the artist. I actually feel for the guy who put them together, because they basically were trying to ruin him.
This topic was made for _The Honeyz_ , a British RnB girl group from the 90s who were pretty successful in their home country. I remember them for their RnB love ballad _Finally Found_ . The group went through a rotating lineup over the years, with member Heavenli Roberts in particular coming and going, before disbanding in the early 00s (They have since reunited and disbanded again a couple of times and are currently active ahead of their 25th anniversary). Years after disbandment, while 3 members of the group (Célena Cherry, Heavenli Roberts & Mariama Goodman) were participating in British reality program _The Big Reunion_ in 2013 , it was alleged that former member Naima Belkhiati was added to the duo of Cherry & Roberts (nee. Abdi) by their label purely for visuals and that she couldn't sing, to such a degree that her mic would be turned off during live performances. Notably, Belkhiati was the only member of the group who didn't participate in _The Big Reunion_ and given other allegations of boyfriend stealing etc were made in her absence, it may have been for the best for her. AFAIK, Belkhiati didn't and hasn't responded to the comments made about her role in the group, and seems to have moved on from that era of her life. She has continued to decline participation in any of the reunions following the original disbandment, though the other members have said they have always invited her and the door is always open.

I know your audience is more north American but have you heard of Sugababes? They were incredibly successful in the UK (6 #1s) and Europe and had about 5 lineup changes and continued making hits. It would be interesting if you mentioned them if you do a video on girl group lineup changes

It's always so dumb and sad when members of a group aren't on a song at all. Like why would you ever allow that to be a thing? Every member of the group should get represented in every song, or at least have a spotlight dance moment like they do for Momo in Twice or other main dancers.

I would deuce right out of any group if I was frequently left out of songs especially if they were hit songs, well-promoted songs, or title tracks. And ‘frequent’ to me is it happening at minimum once a year. I have too much pride and sense of self-worth. I’d be planning my ultimate escape, getting a legal team together so I can get out of the current contract then go bag a solo record deal elsewhere
The choice of the song wasn't the best for the Pussycat dolls. Jai Ho and Hush Hush are all done by Nicole (She even performed Hush Hush solo on the tour before it became a single), as many songs on the albums. PCD, is either full Nicole or having Carmit and Melody on some backing/lead, even Wait a minute includes Keri Hilson as backgroud vocalist and any other girl, just Nicole and Keri Doll Domination (album version), is Nicole solo or having Melody aswell The best example would be When I Grow Up, if you listen to the Album version and the video version you can hear the differences. Only Nicole vocals on the album version but they went to the studio with the girls (all of them this time) to rerecord the backup and you can actually hear them. It is also the case for the songs that came after the backlash of Jai Ho, for the re release of Doll Domination (including Jai Ho and Hush Hush) they have Top Of The World and Painted Windows where you can hear all the girls in the backing vocals. So yes, Ashley Kim and Jessica were never planned as singers for both albums, they were not even included as backup singers.

One of the biggest "What If's" for me is what if Aubrey and D were never fired from Danity Kane. What if DK were still together for awhile longer after Welcome To The Dollhouse. Would they have had another number one album? A even bigger lead single? So many things we will never know..

I actually remember Shannon said in an interview around the time of their 1st disbandment that had they continued they actually a 5 album idea where each album would highlight the musical taste of one of the members. I thought it was so dumb that “No Scrub (Remix)” is the version with Left Eye as if she isn’t a part of the group. That was the stupidest thing ever. Left Eye didn’t rap as much as she should’ve in the group. “Unpretty” should’ve had a rap verse as well as “Baby Baby Baby”, etc.
I think every member in a group should at least be given a chance to sing lead and background. If they're not cutting vocally, then they need to be set up with an amazing vocal coach. Also, the production team should also aim towards crafting music that suits the whole groups voices. It's sad what they did Left Eye erasing her rap verses because she was amazing. I prefer Waterfalls and No Scrubs with her verses on them. Also, I don't think Left Eye ever sung on any tracks. Debra Killings was indeed the "4th official member" of the group as she sung backgrounds on several songs on every TLC album even their latest one. Sometimes she would even sing backgrounds on songs with just her and either T-Boz or Chili. My suggestions for Part 2 to this video: 1. 3LW - Naturi was unfairly left off most of their 2nd album. There's conflicting opinions where apparently their management has said she wouldn't come to the studio sessions during that time, but Naturi said in her Wendy Williams interview that she was there for the recordings & they wouldn't even let her sing a small background part on a song. This annoys me cause that 2nd album is good (even though the music was too mature for a teenage Kiely to be singing) & Naturi's vocals really could've be utilized on it... 2. 702 - Michael Bivens has stated on 702's UnSung that he should've done a better job explaining to Misha and Irish why Meelah as a new member was gonna be the lead singer. Irish and Misha could sing (Misha can still hit some of those high belts she used to even now) & I do like their songs All I Want, No Doubt and Don't Go Breaking My Heart (should've been released as single after Where My Girls At?) where the trio all sing lead. 3. BoyzIIMen - Mike only got to sing lead a few times from what I remember which I'm guessing was because his deep bass voice didn't fit their songs but I did like how he sounded on U Know. BoyzIIMen still sounds great today BUT they haven't sounded quite the same as. they did without Mike's bass harmonies. 4. Dream - I'm not that familiar with their music as a whole but I at least know for their singles Ashley sang all the leads. 5. NSYNC: Chris, Joey, and Lance lead vocals were left out of a bunch of NSYNC's songs, they were mostly regulated to background vocalists (imo that really sucked for Joey as his baritone harmonies are hard to decipher). It even sounds like they were left off their latest reunion song as I think only Justin and JC sang lead.

I was waiting for someone to mention this! She was the last member added to the group. They discovered her because she was on a singing competition, won, and was placed in a group- even though she was VERY open about how she wanted a solo career. PCD were already a cabaret show, and Robin formed the band with 5-6 members in mind before Nicole. Melody was hired to specifically be the lead singer. One of the og girls left, and they "replaced" her with Nicole and re-crafted the group around her because- like you of course know- she was sleeping with label execs. Nicole has always been very slimy and manipulative, but she's getting justice with this court case vs Robin (not that I like Robin either).
On No Scrubs, Tboz doesn’t sing on the Album version. Kandi and Tiny are doing the backgrounds. Most likely they kept the backgrounds from the demo and added Chili on the verses.

hey i wanted to add more context to the 5050 situation: the girls who are suing weren't the issue/greedy. all 3 members who are still pursuing legal action suffered severe health conditions: aran's stomach issues were neglected to the point she required surgery and was at risk of developing cancer, the forced dieting caused sio to experience kidney issues to the point she was nearly put on dialysis and saena can no longer have periods without heavy medication due to malnutrition. this has all been corroborated with doctors notes dating back years since the signed with attrakt.
keena was the only member who didn't suffer extreme health consequences plus she was a trainee for the longest having nearly 10 years of trainee debt and mentioned having dozens of part time jobs to not be homeless. while she has dropped her role in the current suit, at no point has she denied the other girls claims and probably cannot afford the legal fees to fight attrakt.
another issue is that siahn (the groups producer and head of the givers, a company that attrakt subcontracted to train and produce 5050) encouraged the girls who were already suffering under attrakt to file suit and that warner would support them. only after filing suit did the members' lawyers find out not only did siahn (allegedly) commit fraud by forging keena's signature on a contract that would reduce her profits from cupid to close to nothing, but it was staff under the givers and not just attrakt who had been abusing the members. basically the members thought they could trust siahn over the attrakt ceo and only after suing did they find out he was also abusing them financially. it looks like siahn thought he could get warner music to buy out 5050's contract from attrakt and he could profit from it but the girls lawyers discovered his own shady behaviour.
three members are still suing attrakt not just because of the abuses they faced but because there is about 1 billion won that was assigned to their trainee debt that cannot be accounted for. the ceo was fighting their termination suits for months until this last month when they suddenly terminated their contracts. i would guess that this is because he has a long history of mistreatment of idols and suspicious financial activity. when the termination of their contracts were announced, the members lawyers have said they will still pursue legal action because of the lack of financial transparency.

The racism of cutting Left Eye's rap infuriates me to this day. However, when they play Waterfalls on "white radio" I always just rap her verse and pretend I'm in my old talent shows. it is frustrating to not see Left eye rap as much, but I think the group was trying for crossover appeal, so less "hood" if you will. If you listen to Left Eye's rap, that stuff wouldn't have help with the exposure. Sometimes I even looked at her sideways with the lyrical content. but I'm sure she was gettign heat from hood peopel for her raps to be harsher. We see that in all groups really even the boybands (the bad boy is the one who raps). Whatevsss. I didn't know that about Victoria. She sounded well when the first album first came out and they sang acapella a lot. Neerves probably got to her. I was always pissed she didn't sing "Out of your Mind" or Innocent Girl or I wish on the reunion tour. Letoya adn Latavia sang high and low so unfortunately those are for blending not for lead. I wish they got to be heard. The Pussycats dolls is such a funny case bc for years everyone always gave Nicole shit for being the face of the group when it’s purely just how record executives marketed her and the group, it’s like kpop companies picking a favorite out of their groups and marketing the popular member to be the face, plus I don’t blame melody for not wanting to come back, she wanted to be a singer in her own right and was underutilized and was basically designed to be Nicole’s understudy/backup singer and then the other girls just danced, 90% of the songs was Nicole with melody doing some runs and adlibs in the back
The other girls were salaried employees and Nicole had an actual deal 😢 and Nicole CANNOT dance like the other girls, at all.
People gave Nicole shit for it because she always pretends like the other girls were lazy and didn’t WANT to record, but we now know that melody did guide vocals for half the songs until Nicole was available to do the actual recording, and that melody was hired to be lead singer. Nobody is mad Nicole was chosen as the focal point, it’s how she twists the narative to make herself a victim for having to do more vocals, while also trying to make it seem like she’s more important than everyone else.

Left eye verses were introspective, unique and fun. Aint 2 proud 2 beg has a full rap version that really showcased her skills. She definitely was a top female mc and glad ppl even today know she really rapped on alot of those songs.

Call me uncultured but it feels like Little Mix is the only mainstream western girl group that has able to give equal opportunities to each one of the members in the group to shine while at the same time able to pull great vocal harmonies as a unit. Everyone knows that each one of the members (while also includes Jesy) is a good vocalist and they are/were given solid line distributions to achieve that. I believe that is one of the major reasons that has kept them together without much dramas in comparison to what had happened surrounding other mainstream groups (i get the messiness surrounding the departure of Jesy but that's on a different matter).

For those who want to know: FIFTY FIFTY had 3 members leaving due to horrible and stressful legal fights with their CEO. Keena was the only member that stayed and returned to the company, dropping her side of the lawsuit. ATTRAKT, FIFTY FIFTY's company, is now recruiting 3 new members as we speak. Not sure how they'll go about the award shows season. It must be awkward, because neither Keena or the 3 new girls have a part in the viral English version of Cupid.

After Destiny's Child lineup change, Beyonce admitted that LeToya and LaTavia weren't on 9 of the songs on TWOTW specifically Bug A Boo. But she said Kelly & her did the vocals not by choice. It makes me wonder who was keeping the other two from singing on the records and how the hand was forced to maintain their "roles".

They have some really great songs. But like all girl groups put together on a reality t.v show they were doomed to fall due to poor management and lack of trust. One member Dawn Richard recently talked about how you put five different girls from different backgrounds who have been for the last year competing against each other on a reality competition and then tell them "hey your gonna be buddies and sing and perform together" it's just not gonna gel that easily. It didn't help that different people in management were telling each girl different things breaking trust and connection within the group.
Not that I am a fan of Diddy at ALL, but if you knew a bit more about Danity Kane, he was spot on with Aubrey. Aubrey wanted to be the Nicole Schwarzinger of Danity Kane, and he was absolutely spot on about how she chose her style to be- big hair and sexual looks. She owns it now, but it was very vital that he pointed that out early on.
He created a group, but but she wanted to be the star. When she didn't get that, she checked out. She did the same thing on BET's The Encore- a show with former R&B girl group members (and Nivea, who was always a solo artist) form a supergroup. Aubrey was the first to go because she didn't get to do every she wanted.
To her credit- although they all signed off on it- it's a very weird situation to be in when you go from competing with girls to being in a group with them.

But anyone paying attention knew Aubrey always had a flamboyant personality and was only holding back for the sake of T.V in contrast to her only developing it after fame as Diddy made it sound like. Aubrey was always a team player despite upper management constantly trying to pit the girls against each other. She always spoke for the quieter voices in the group and made concerns heard she started going into other ventures because she didn't want to put up with Diddys B.S. The Jai Ho situation with the Pussycat Dolls is a lot more common now. Most recently with the Trolls soundtrack single Better Place that is credited to both Justin Timberlake and NSYNC.

The situation with PCD is so frustrating because the other girls are actually really great singers, and they each have a different flavor to their vocals. Carmit has a deep and sultry tone, while Ashley's is very soft and pure. Kimberly has a funky style with a more nasal tone, and Jessica put in some serious work on her vocal delivery and has a very ethereal and emotive style. Add to this Melody's strong vocal power and Motown inspired tone, along with Nicole's powerhouse vocals and versatility, and you could have a dynamic group where everyone gets an opportunity to shine. Instead we got Nicole and some other girls.

Lisas rap verses have been almost erased off the market. I didnt even know she had ACTUAL verses until I saw their live performances because all the versions of their songs on streaming platforms dont have her raps in them. That just feels so foul I would feel absolutely cheated.
Controversial opinion: I think it's fine if certain group members are left off a song if the song sounds better as a result. I just think they should be in rotation on the album: if it's a ballad, somebody whose a stronger vocalist should step in, whereas if it's a dance banger better dancers should be in spotlight. Unfortunately, this strategy is rarely pursued in showbiz.

This is a good idea for album tracks but not for album singles. Especially in the late '90's to the mid 2000's, what you showcase on the song is the element that will determine your contribution in the song. Everyone needs to stand out on the song while at the same time coming together well as a unit. K-pop actually does a pretty good job at highlighting this despite some failed ones.

People don't know that before Lisa passed, she was not only trying to go solo but transitioning into a whole new persona (one of her alter egos as she called it) called N.I.N.A. She was signed to Death Row (she was dating Suge and was good with some of the artists) while she was still contractually obligated to do a TLC album (something the labels and the producers purposely dragged out most likely out of spite for everything that happened with TLC as a whole).
3D was gonna be TLC's last album indefinitely because it was the last one they were contractually obligated to do (part of why Lisa's death has always been fishy to me). This would leave room for Lisa to fully debut as N.I.N.A.
After 3D, Tboz and Chilli had a show where they found a girl to potentially replace Lisa, but nothing came of it (cuz it was more than liekly just something for them to get some money from). Chilli released some solo material and had her own reality show afterwards.
Funny enough, T-Boz was the one I remember doing more "prominent" solo projects after CrazySexyCool as she had a whole song and remix on the Rugrats in Paris soundtrack (the scene where Angelica is in first class on the plane kicking the guy's seat). Everyone did, but I remember seeing more of Tionne's work during TLC's hiatus before Fanmail. Some speculate each members' solo projects were purposely overshadowed by the label so no one would think TLC was going solo (even though somethings were just side "ventures" anyway). The label probably wanted to endure the girls stayed true to those twisted contracts.
I'll forever be a huge TLC fan- especially being from ATL, but they have done some shady things between Lisa and their treatment of Crystal (the OG "C" and founder of TLC). It's a reason the family doesn't always get along well with them (which is even sadder because T-Boz and Lisa were cousins by marriage), but they have been through a lot as well from the get-go with the industry.

Victoria only sings the "are you for real" in the second verse (in both the album and single version) of Wannabe but she isn't on the album versions of 2 Become 1, Mama and If You Can't Dance. Which means she only sings (barely) in 7/10 tracks of their debut album. It's hard to hear her in Last Time Lover and Something Kinda Funny but she's definitely there.

create the harmonies. It was actually a practice dating back to Girls Tyme where they would send only Beyonce into the studio to stack vocals whenever they wanted to save money on studio time.
I think it was shady that the record label basically had Nicole record the album behind the other dolls backs. It feels like they used the group to try and launch Nicole’s solo career

so yeah, there's a lot of girlbands and even boybands that have terrible distribution.
There's these examples of Fifth Harmony on the 2 singles of their debut album Reflection BO$$ and Sledgehammer, where Dinah's not singing kinda nothing. She said she "might" be in the background vocals (not even herself knows) - these kind of channels (wich are awesome btw) had made vocal analysis for both songs and you can't even hear her (in BO$$ is kinda audible, in Sledgehammer is nowhere to be found). There's another example for this group in Worth It, where Lauren doesn't sing. Dinah said she sings the chorus, but she's not audible at all. Chorus is just Camila and Normani, and both also have their own solos.
In other korean girl groups, for example BLACKPINK and TWICE, there's always someone that doesn't have much lines. In case of TWICE, they're a lot of members, but the one's with most lines are Nayeon and Jihyoo (sorry if it's misswritten). In BLACKPINK's case, Jennie is the main rapper, Lisa the main dancer, Jisoo the visual and Rosé the main vocalist, so i don't get why Jennie and Lisa, wich are the rappers, kinda always get more lines than Rosé and Jisoo, wich are the main singers. Rosé saves herself with her iconic background vocals, but Jisoo almost always gets the least lines. Also, the group is so centered in Jennie... - I think it'd be interesting to analize.
In case of boybands, cases that I know are the Backstreet Boys and One Direction, groups that also haven't the best line distribution. Backstreet Boys for example, had the "background vocalist" role, which was given to Howie D (high harmonies) and Kevin (low harmonies). They almost never had solos in their first projects, so the known artists in there are Brian, Nick and AJ. Even Nick in some songs was left out bcs he was a child and maturing his voice. A clear example is I'll Never Break Your Heart, where only AJ and Brian have solos.
And for One Direction, Niall and Louis where always left out for distributions, specially Louis. They had almost everytime the least lines, and the band was centered in Harry & Liam (not even Zayn, their best vocalist).
So, i'd request (if you can and want) a part 2 for the girlgroups section, and another for boybands

I know 2NE1 (this collaboration was likely recorded during their time with Will.I.Am on making their English debut album in the early 2010’s) were featured on a Will.I.Am track called Gettin’ Dumb, but it was quite obvious that only Cl & Park Bom (who are the most fluent in English in the group) sung on the final recording, where Dara and Minzy weren’t included (despite their pretty good English on tracks like Can Nobody [English version] & and Dara in later lyrics on Ugly). It’s also happened on 2NE1’s track Goodbye without Minzy, because she left the company and it was basically a goodbye song as 2 of the 3 remaining members were leaving as well.
And with Fifty Fifty, it was actually the girls who ruined themselves. Their original company actually put a lot of money and time into them, and so when they went big, he actually did deserve compensation for how much work he put into the group. The girls and I think a former producer were trying to break away from the original company to make more money, I think. Usually k-pop idols do get payed crap, especially small companies, but this was obviously the original company getting screwed over by the artist. I actually feel for the guy who put them together, because they basically were trying to ruin him.
This topic was made for _The Honeyz_ , a British RnB girl group from the 90s who were pretty successful in their home country. I remember them for their RnB love ballad _Finally Found_ . The group went through a rotating lineup over the years, with member Heavenli Roberts in particular coming and going, before disbanding in the early 00s (They have since reunited and disbanded again a couple of times and are currently active ahead of their 25th anniversary).
Years after disbandment, while 3 members of the group (Célena Cherry, Heavenli Roberts & Mariama Goodman) were participating in British reality program _The Big Reunion_ in 2013 , it was alleged that former member Naima Belkhiati was added to the duo of Cherry & Roberts (nee. Abdi) by their label purely for visuals and that she couldn't sing, to such a degree that her mic would be turned off during live performances.
Notably, Belkhiati was the only member of the group who didn't participate in _The Big Reunion_ and given other allegations of boyfriend stealing etc were made in her absence, it may have been for the best for her. AFAIK, Belkhiati didn't and hasn't responded to the comments made about her role in the group, and seems to have moved on from that era of her life. She has continued to decline participation in any of the reunions following the original disbandment, though the other members have said they have always invited her and the door is always open.
I would love to see a boy band version! The only 1D song I like is Stole My Heart and I just realized this year that only Harry, Zayn, and Louis sing the song.
I know your audience is more north American but have you heard of Sugababes? They were incredibly successful in the UK (6 #1s) and Europe and had about 5 lineup changes and continued making hits. It would be interesting if you mentioned them if you do a video on girl group lineup changes

It's always so dumb and sad when members of a group aren't on a song at all. Like why would you ever allow that to be a thing? Every member of the group should get represented in every song, or at least have a spotlight dance moment like they do for Momo in Twice or other main dancers.

I just don’t get what was the point of having 4 members in a group if Beyoncé is just gonna the songs entirely or mostly by herself. It’s very frustrating to go back and only hear her especially when Michelle Kelly and the rest have such unique voices. I hate when girl groups do that.
Kelly and Michelle have plenty of lead vocals on the last two DC albums....most importantly LEAD SINGERS sing LEAD...just like in the Jackson 5, The Supremes, SWV, 702, The Bluebells, Dru Hill & many others LMAO

I would deuce right out of any group if I was frequently left out of songs especially if they were hit songs, well-promoted songs, or title tracks. And ‘frequent’ to me is it happening at minimum once a year. I have too much pride and sense of self-worth. I’d be planning my ultimate escape, getting a legal team together so I can get out of the current contract then go bag a solo record deal elsewhere

The choice of the song wasn't the best for the Pussycat dolls. Jai Ho and Hush Hush are all done by Nicole (She even performed Hush Hush solo on the tour before it became a single), as many songs on the albums.
PCD, is either full Nicole or having Carmit and Melody on some backing/lead, even Wait a minute includes Keri Hilson as backgroud vocalist and any other girl, just Nicole and Keri
Doll Domination (album version), is Nicole solo or having Melody aswell
The best example would be When I Grow Up, if you listen to the Album version and the video version you can hear the differences. Only Nicole vocals on the album version but they went to the studio with the girls (all of them this time) to rerecord the backup and you can actually hear them. It is also the case for the songs that came after the backlash of Jai Ho, for the re release of Doll Domination (including Jai Ho and Hush Hush) they have Top Of The World and Painted Windows where you can hear all the girls in the backing vocals.
So yes, Ashley Kim and Jessica were never planned as singers for both albums, they were not even included as backup singers.

I will say. Left Eye wrote a song called let’s just do it that should’ve been a left eye single on fanmail. The other 2 got 2 songs that they sung without the other members… also that challenge would’ve gotten them out of their contracts

One of the biggest "What If's" for me is what if Aubrey and D were never fired from Danity Kane. What if DK were still together for awhile longer after Welcome To The Dollhouse. Would they have had another number one album? A even bigger lead single? So many things we will never know..

I actually remember Shannon said in an interview around the time of their 1st disbandment that had they continued they actually a 5 album idea where each album would highlight the musical taste of one of the members. I think they would've had another season of the show in conjunction with the 3rd album it probably would've went #1.

Left Eye didn’t rap as much as she should’ve in the group. “Unpretty” should’ve had a rap verse as well as “Baby Baby Baby”, etc.

I think every member in a group should at least be given a chance to sing lead and background. If they're not cutting vocally, then they need to be set up with an amazing vocal coach. Also, the production team should also aim towards crafting music that suits the whole groups voices.
It's sad what they did Left Eye erasing her rap verses because she was amazing. I prefer Waterfalls and No Scrubs with her verses on them. Also, I don't think Left Eye ever sung on any tracks. Debra Killings was indeed the "4th official member" of the group as she sung backgrounds on several songs on every TLC album even their latest one. Sometimes she would even sing backgrounds on songs with just her and either T-Boz or Chili.
My suggestions for Part 2 to this video:
1. 3LW - Naturi was unfairly left off most of their 2nd album. There's conflicting opinions where apparently their management has said she wouldn't come to the studio sessions during that time, but Naturi said in her Wendy Williams interview that she was there for the recordings & they wouldn't even let her sing a small background part on a song. This annoys me cause that 2nd album is good (even though the music was too mature for a teenage Kiely to be singing) & Naturi's vocals really could've be utilized on it...
2. 702 - Michael Bivens has stated on 702's UnSung that he should've done a better job explaining to Misha and Irish why Meelah as a new member was gonna be the lead singer. Irish and Misha could sing (Misha can still hit some of those high belts she used to even now) & I do like their songs All I Want, No Doubt and Don't Go Breaking My Heart (should've been released as single after Where My Girls At?) where the trio all sing lead.
3. BoyzIIMen - Mike only got to sing lead a few times from what I remember which I'm guessing was because his deep bass voice didn't fit their songs but I did like how he sounded on U Know. BoyzIIMen still sounds great today BUT they haven't sounded quite the same as. they did without Mike's bass harmonies.
4. Dream - I'm not that familiar with their music as a whole but I at least know for their singles Ashley sang all the leads.
5. NSYNC: Chris, Joey, and Lance lead vocals were left out of a bunch of NSYNC's songs, they were mostly regulated to background vocalists (imo that really sucked for Joey as his baritone harmonies are hard to decipher). It even sounds like they were left off their latest reunion song as I think only Justin and JC sang lead.

I had a video editing instructor in college who said he did work for "a music project centered around a woman named Nichole called the Pussycat Dolls." 😂🤣🤣. Anyways, I'd love a video about bad distribution in songs. I think it's more noticeable in kpop because so often, groups don't sing together. There are exceptions like Red Velvet, and other SM groups.

Pussycat Doll creator Robin Antin already said in a podcast she wanted MELODY to be the leader, but everything changed after Nicole started dating Record label' presidente Jimmy Iovine (Perez reveal while he was married). Also Nicole solo mgmt became the groups mgmt.... so...
I was waiting for someone to mention this! She was the last member added to the group. They discovered her because she was on a singing competition, won, and was placed in a group- even though she was VERY open about how she wanted a solo career.
PCD were already a cabaret show, and Robin formed the band with 5-6 members in mind before Nicole. Melody was hired to specifically be the lead singer. One of the og girls left, and they "replaced" her with Nicole and re-crafted the group around her because- like you of course know- she was sleeping with label execs.
Nicole has always been very slimy and manipulative, but she's getting justice with this court case vs Robin (not that I like Robin either).
On No Scrubs, Tboz doesn’t sing on the Album version. Kandi and Tiny are doing the backgrounds. Most likely they kept the backgrounds from the demo and added Chili on the verses.
Fun fact on PCDs 2nd album each doll has a solo song and each one is labeled as “Introducing (Doll’s Name Here)”
