  • “Tango and Its Powerful Embrace” is a short talk about how Argentine tango pulls people in from all over the world, followed by two performances.
Cyrena Drusine is a professional tango dancer and instructor from NYC. She is also the owner and co-founder of Narrative Tango Tours, a full service tango business offering an array of tango activities to visitors of Buenos Aires. Cyrena grew up in NYC where she studied at the School of American Ballet. She completed her BA in Critical Social Thought and French at Mount Holyoke College. She also studied at La Sorbonne in Paris. Cyrena completed her MA in Performance Studies at NYU in May 2008, where she wrote her thesis, “Una Emocion: A Tango of Memories, Nostalgia and History,” focusing on the sensual experience of tango.
Cyrena has been teaching and performing tango in Buenos Aires for the past 6 years. In 2007, Cyrena won the first US Tango Championship in Tango Salon and competed in the finals at the World Championship. In 2008-2009 she performed with Tango Pasión. She has performed in some of the most famous tango houses in Buenos Aires such as Tango Porteño.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I do agree that this is more a performance than the experience one would get at a milonga, but anybody spreading the word and showing the different forms of the embrace, has my vote.

I have seen it first in 1987 at Calle Florida. A vivid memory that can't be forgotten.

With your speech, they should experience for themselves with an unknown
person they feel attraction and compatibility, provided they know the basic
    steps rules and conventions.

Was that Jesus Valasquez? The first song looked like a recreation of a performance of his some years ago.

After a long introduction about the embrace and intimacy of Tango and we get a demo of cold and affected show tango? Boooh.

The staging and choreography of the dancing demonstrated here may appeal to some people but most dedicated dancers of Argentine social tango, who crowd the dance floors in Buenos Aires, hold this show stuff in disdain and it is certainly not an example of the " powerful embrace" that attracts them. Tango is an improvised dance - a dance of imagination, possibility and presence. Furthermore, Cyrena and her partner ripped off the choreography for Evaristo Carriego from Carlos Gavito and Marianne's piece in the traveling show Forever Tango, which is far more compelling and can be seen on TH-cam, If you are going to watch tango choreography, go for the best.

Close embrace seems fine. Leaves cold embrace (open) and practice hold ,and changing between them as the dance and music progress .Matter of preference, or, what am I missing? Please tell.

she talks about the embrace to be a connection, intimacy and all the other stuff, which I agree on. But the performance tells a different story: sex, desire, swinging, speed, romantic, because it does almost not contain that said embrace.

I guess what she lacks is presence and natural sensuality? Technically awesome though.

I think that the power of tango embrace can be felt without making one single step... The show is nice, but one can see it's staged, and this ruins part of the magic for me, I guess...
