    Do you check the leaf spring for cracks and micro-defects before working it?

    • @MakerHA
      @MakerHA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it has to be hurt. However, some springs already come with the famous frog skin. what would be this porosity in the plate, that is, the steel was overheated and tends to lose carbon. However, I always use heat treatment first. When the cracks are difficult, or you remove them and if you are able to continue or simply change the material 👍👍👍

    • @motd8931
      @motd8931 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm a hobbyist blacksmith that dabbles with knife making. Don't have a good belt sander (yet), last few knives I made I sharpened using homemade sanding sticks, starting at 60 grit, going up to 1000. I had fun and learned a lot, and gained an appreciation for power tools. I've thought about investing in a knife sharpener that would give a quicker edge. Thanks for that!

    • @MakerHA
      @MakerHA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@motd8931 Yes, at first I didn't have one either, but over time I saved some money, bought material and made my own sander, it's not one of the best but it works very well. Do this, save some money and invest, even if it's just for a hobby, it helps a lot in making

    Forge and drill press are not exactly "simple tools that anyone has at home" (I wish I have). Also, nylon isn't good material for scales, you can't glue them to tang, and there will be a gap - nice place for rust to settle almost immediately.

    • @MakerHA
      @MakerHA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My forge is as simple as possible, they are loose bricks and I use charcoal to heat it, since my drill is also the lowest model available, there is not much difference between it and a hand-held one. As for nylon, I like to use it because I think it's a good, soft and comfortable material, as for rust, that's why I left the blade in the forge rough, to leave a layer of burnt oil on the steel to protect against rust. , it's not 100% effective but it's still better than taking that protection away. 👍👍👍

    • @john-doe-I
      @john-doe-I ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MakerHA Still, this tools are too much for every home (at least for me - they won't fit on the balcony, where I make most of the stuff). As for forging scales as protection - on one of the blades (stainless!) I left them as evidence of "forginess", and after some soaking in water - rust start forming around them, weird.
      Nylon don't glue and quite slippery for the handle, recently I like to use textolite - sturdy, cheap, and can be glued with super-glue into monolith. Actually, I form thick handles by gluing relatively thin (3mm) layers, as a bonus - you can pre-cut cavity for the tang in central layers before assembling, It makes life much easier.

    • @MakerHA
      @MakerHA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@john-doe-I Yes, not every house has space to do such work, I agree. Yes, it will rust anyway, using carbon steel it will rust, regardless of the surface treatment you do. I didn't glue the nylon, I just riveted it with this knife and I left the finish sanded with 120-grit sandpaper, that is, it was rough, so as not to be slippery. I've never worked with this material, but since it's the base of some epoxy resin, it looks really good. 👍👍👍

    Thats a real nice beefy blade. The handle reminds me of the old western colt revolver style pistol grips. That worth buying in my book. Great work. 🫡👍
