To everyone new to power query: I started using it 1 year and half ago. I learned by myself as it is really easy for 98% of things you want to do. It totally changed my way of working. Since then I never had the feeling that I needed to re-do everything from scratch again and again. And Power Query is just the beginning, when you start using Power Pivot it gets even better (both work together). Ah and also, while you learn these 2 on excel... be aware that you are learning Power BI as well as the engines are the same at 99.9%. So yes, go for it, it will change your life forever. (Personally thanks to these new skills I got a better job at a bigger company).

To extract the customer ID, copy the entire column to a new one at the very end of your data set. Highlight the entire column, go to data, text to columns and perform a text to columns using the "-" as the delimiter. i learned power query about 5 years ago. i had to take over a project which required 100% certification that each charge was backed by a purchase order and proof of payment. thankfully, the data was all under one roof but the application did not come with canned reports to just that. i am loathed to spend the next 6 weeks 24/7 doing EXACT/MATCH, VLOOKUP, SUMIF and still not get it right. luckily, a team member asked me if i knew SQL. i mentioned that in prior position, i used SQL on multiple data tables. he said you are in luck, if you can grasp that, you can use power query. i built it from scratch, proving 99% of a $350 million job, that took me a couple of hours per day.

Very interesting. I love the way you show examples. Your teaching style rocks!
Glad you think so, Michael!
Thank you, it really, really did. And this video was the initiator. Since than I have changed so much in my daily work. This was also what lead met to use vba and later vba with sap. Truly life changing in terms of work.
Wonderful! Glad I could inspire you 😃
I've subsribed and turned on all notifications after seeing this. Good stuff Leila! Thanks :)
i learned power query about 5 years ago. i had to take over a project which required 100% certification that each charge was backed by a purchase order and proof of payment. thankfully, the data was all under one roof but the application did not come with canned reports to just that. i am loathed to spend the next 6 weeks 24/7 doing EXACT/MATCH, VLOOKUP, SUMIF and still not get it right. luckily, a team member asked me if i knew SQL. i mentioned that in prior position, i used SQL on multiple data tables. he said you are in luck, if you can grasp that, you can use power query. i built it from scratch, proving 99% of a $350 million job, that took me a couple of hours per day.
Thanks for sharing your experience Doug!
You are amazing ! I use to be a MS Office user specialist master in 2000. I am surprise this Power Query technique make repeatable analysis, report so much simpler. I enroll to your course and found it very beneficial. My only regret is I should have done this much earlier ! Well worth the investment and as you said. This little skill in Excel give so much benefit for the rest of my career. Keep up the good work and I forward to learn more from you !
You make teaching so sweet. Every student would want to be in your class. Thanks
😘
@@LeilaGharani is this course for excel advanced users only ?
you are great! i started use it recently and I totally agree.. it is incredibly more powerful and easy to get what i need
Great to hear!
have been using this tool now for quite some time, once you are used to it is a joy to work with...
PoweQuery is a beast in terms of transforming data. One of the best things except for all filtering data, remove subtotals, merging, and split columns for me personally is that you can unpivot data.
I hope that you'll publish some tips and tricks for PowerQuery too, Leila. As always - love your content.
Pivot, Unpivot, Custom columns... it really is a beast :)
The slightly tense but exciting music in the background along with these jokes is making this really entertaining. I'm hooked for the big reveal! =D
So, was the reveal worth the wait? 😎
@@LeilaGharani Yes, I'm very likely to sign up for this course. Power Query is something I have not explored fully and you seem to have an effective teaching style. Thanks for sharing these snippets.
She's pretty easy on the eye !
It's amazing! I think all this can only be done by tools like SQL, Python Pandas or R Tidyverse library. I really like the Office Platform more and more, especially now Power Query. Thank you Leila!
I learn excel by watching your videos. Your video is very easy to understand and interesting.
Glad to hear that!
@@LeilaGharani love you so much...
@@LeilaGharani i work as compliance officer. I need to filter and sort big data for my company. The most challenging task is based on that data, i need to prepare report which is by entering manually risk scoring for each customer. I worried i might insert wrong scoring while preparing this report. For your information there are few parameters to cross checked before entering score. Hope i can send you email regarding this doubt. I apologise because my english is not good.
just bought the course, and wow its a long one...this will make me busy for awhile. looking great and informative as usual, stay safe Ms. Gharani
Awesome, thank you!
Leila, You are amazing!!! Thank you so much for your remarkable instruction and sharing your mastery.
You are so welcome!
It's true, Power Query is a great tool and even a little bit can go a long way. I have a report at work that I used to have to manually paste additional source data into every day and it became very tedious very fast. Using PQ to pull that dynamic source in for me saves that much more time each morning, so I can move on to the NEXT morning report I have to pull :P
Thanks Leila it's really changed my life...
Happy to hear that!
The best tutor ever.
