If you wanted to give this a try, here's the link to the Lighting setup - adaptalux.com/product/iris-photography-lighting-pack/ As everyone is asking, the chin rest was from AliExpress, was very expensive and not great quality. We don't recommend getting the one we used for this demo.
I had an enquiry in my portrait studio for Iris Photography. I'd never heard of it. A quick Google later and I found your video. They say, "every day's a school day", well it certainly is. Off to play with my macro lens and Aputure continuous lighting or, a strobe with a snoot. Thank you :)
hi ben, absolutely a great video, which brings this kind of macros to professional. just on my side a black box is missing, but this will be definitely created. thanks for this video
I think if you are just doing it casually, a black sheet would do too, or just be very diligent about other light sources in your room. A more permanent setup should have some kind of shroud though.
I think even knowing how it's done, it's not something everyone will be able or willing do. There is huge demand for this kind of photography at the moment so I think your business will do great even if it's not a secret any more!
Hi Ben, great presentation and thank you! In regards to the reflection in the eyes, I wonder if you can change the angle of reflection by removing your lights from the top of the camera and position them independently from focus, then move the camera back to a point where the reflection of the light caused by the lights hitting the eyes is not longer hitting your lens, I realized though, that you might need a different lens, eventually if it can be worked then you will be able to take one shot removing all the extra work in Photoshop.
Yes, with a selection of lenses to experiment with, there might be a way to get the reflection into a more favourable spot. I've seen people try to get the reflection into the centre of the pupil but this is even more difficult as the light would need to be positioned between the lens and the eye. At least with my lenses and working distances, there's no way to position those reflections in a way that does not impact the Iris, the curvature of the eye really makes it hard to have any lighting that does not create a reflection in that centre area. I think this is the most practical way of doing it, even with the additional editing.
I see you don’t recommend that chin rest what would you recommend instead? I’m in love with this tutorial I can’t stop watching it for more inspo. I’m very new to photography as a profession any tips on making it look less grainy I can’t seem to win so far. Also what i come here for which I think would be amazing is like an item inventory where you got it how much and if you think it’s worth it because I wouldn’t know where to start. Thank you! Your awesome!
A few people have had luck getting second hand ones from optometrists and looking locally. I'm afraid they are not too common though, hence the price of them! As for the grain, the lower the iso the better, and shoot in raw to use the new ai denoise tools in lightroom and photoshop.
@adaptalux Great video, love it! Any recomandation about the setting you used in your camera ? I am struggling with mime using Manuel mode: 1/126 f/11 and iso 100 to 200, images is too dark
Those are about the settings I used though every eye will be different and you will need a powerful light source. I'd up the ISO from there as you don't want to sacrifice depth of field or shutter speed.
Hi Ben. Thanks for the video. I'm also working with the Adaptalux system. I' d like to know what is the ISO setting you recommend for sharper images. Thanks.
ISO should always be as low as possible while allowing for your other settings. Most modern cameras can handle 2-3000 ISO without much grain these days but I would only do that if you really need the leeway in the shutter speed or aperture.
This looks really fun - thank you for putting the video together. I might be searching for the wrong words, but I didn't find any of the headrests online... could you suggest where to find one?
Hi both. The rail used here is from Neewer. A cheap option but I can't recommend it well, it's quite rickety and has a lot of extra movement in the parts that make both Iris photography and general macro much harder... I'll get a better one, one day!
Thanks, Ben...I guess we get what we pay for. I'm in the process completing my set-up and the macro rail is the last component. Your feedback is not only very timely but very much appreciated for the honesty.
Hi there have just asked my son in law to order one of the iris kits as I am travelling to Ireland to visit the grandkids.. Just wanted to thank you for the concise way you went about detailing the steps necessary to get professional results.. Just one thing I would like to know is where I can find the head rest or something similar whilst I am over there and bring it back with me.. Thanks I hope you do not mind me asking... Don
Sorry to disappoint, it's not something we can recommend. If we find a better one we will update the description and pinned comment. Good luck either way!
I realy enjoyed your presentation but would like to try with normal Macro Lens. Is there anysin of the Flash Emmiter comig back o sale as I an't use my flash itht it? thank Y onRe.
Hello, how much power does the light have? Better yet, at its highest power until parameters can be used in the camera, for example: 1/100 ISO 400 F13. Thank you
We didn't make it with any specific dimensions in mind, it was just a box we had around and it fit the headstand and camera inside, but was a little tight. I think it was roughly 50cm x 50cm
you used f11 to take the pictures. what speed and what ISO have been used? you set the camera to manual mode or automatic? as i only have the control pod version 1 without boost mode, i ordered a new version 3 last week. hope it will arrive soon. best regards - frank
You will need to do your research to find a ballance you're happy with. Better cameras and lenses will get better results with better sensitivity, resolution and features like image stabilisation. The camera and lens setup shown here is a good mid level solution.
Hi Ben, thx for tutorial. I'd like to try this but what about dof with 1 or 2 pictures? for big prints it could be problematic I think? I'll try before with stacking and flashes and You say that I can do the same with one or 3 poctures? I have to use my adaptalux 2.0 :)
The Iris isn't very deep so even a shallow depth of field should be ok if you can focus right. Ours were taken at f11 which gave enough depth, but you could always push the aperture more if you find it's not enough.

This is the best tutorial for iris photo i ve seen and really useful as i wish to start a nomadic iris photo business.
Many thanks !
Thanks Vlad, glad to hear you're starting up an Iris photo venture, best of luck!
@@Adaptalux Thanks ! And by the way... I start my Iris venture with Adaptalux ;-)

Thank you so very much. Been interested and now I know how.
Thank you for the informations shared here.
I like the DIY box, can you give the measurements, please?
This is an incredible tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to be so perfectly clear.❤
Glad you found it useful Danielle!

I’m surprised you’re not using cross polarization to remove the highlights.
I tried that, but unfortunately ended up with a color distorted iris that still had reflections in it.

Cool video, can you put up the name of the rail?
Great info what is the dimensions of the black box ?
Thank you for this. Have ordered your kit! Please can you advise where you got the head stand from? I’ve struggled to find one in the UK. Thanks!
We got ours from aliexpress, but wouldn't recommend it, it was exspensive and not great quality.
Ah yes they’re the only ones I could find which I found strange! Thanks for the reply 👍
Very Good Explanation, Thank You Ben And I've Already Caught Both Arms Hahaha
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
This looks really fun - thank you for putting the video together.
I might be searching for the wrong words, but I didn't find any of the headrests online... could you suggest where to find one?
We got that one from aliexpress. Not sure what we searched for to get it though, sorry!
Thank you for all those infos. 👍🏽
Very cool! I do not see the lumens listed. Can you tell me what the lumens are on high? Thanks
Hi Ben, fantastic tutorial. What focus rail do you use for this type of photography?
I'm curious too. I'd love to photograph irises but can see this setup being useful for other macro photography too. Thanks for the great video! 👁️😄👀

Great Video, thanks! Just a question, where can I get the support for the head? Thanks again!
We got ours from AliExpress, it was overpriced and wouldnt recommend. They are not easy to find though.
Could you please tell me the dimensions of the box? (Length x Width x Depth) 😊

Photoshop
Hey ben where is the headrest from ? thx :)
Can I use an RF-S 35mm f1.8?
Sorry, I've not used that lens to know if toy would be any good for iris photography.
Thanks for the video where to buy the same headrest as the one in the video ?thx
We got our headrest from AliExpress. I wouldn't recommend the one we used, it's expensive and a bit flimsy, but anything similar would do the trick.
Nice explanation. What is the iso and shutter speed?

AliExpress, it was quite expensive and not worth it, don't recommend getting the one we used.

Photoshop.

We got one from AliExpress

question, why not use both lights together?
Then you would have 2 reflections and be unable to remove them.
