Phoenix Suns "7 Seconds or Less" Offense

  • The Phoenix Suns in the Mid 2000's had a very fast paced dynamic offense. Steve Nash and Shawn Marion were two of the best player of that team. The Suns executed a bunch of P&R's and here I breakdown the offense in a game from 2006.

    It's funny how some of these players on this team won a championship but not with the Suns.
    Marion: Mavericks 2011
    Diaw: Spurs 2014
    Barbosa: Warriors 2015
    James Jones: Heat 2012-2013
    I just wish Steve Nash won a ring before he retired.

      +805fillmore He actually did play an important role as a spark plug at times in the Finals last year. Far from a scrub. Sure, he's certainly isn't in his prime anymore, but he's no scrub.

    Steve Kerr was the Suns GM during this time. He wanted to draft Curry, but couldn't.
    10 years later, Steve Kerr and Steph Curry have perfected the philosophy introduced by Nash and the Phoenix Suns. Leandro Barbosa happens to be on both teams. The only differences are that the current Warriors team is just as deadly in the half-court with their ball movement, and they play at an elite level on defense.
    But when Curry or Draymond Green runs and gets out in open space in transition and start making plays for others, it reminds me a lot of Steve Nash and this Suns team that frankly should have gone farther than it did.

    • @2207Jay
      @2207Jay 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrYoumitube the Lakers NEVER beat the Suns in the playoffs during the Nash era... the best they could do was force a game 7 where L.A. lost horribly in a blowout. The ONLY teams that were able to beat Phoenix were well rounded teams like San Antonio and Dallas that kept them from reaching the Finals. But also, Phoenix was ripped off by the ref scandal as well. That Suns team were Capable of winning back to back championships.

      @MrYoumitube B.S. they should have run and pushed the pace even more. More three's, especially, Nash. Plus they had bad luck with injuries and bad deals or no deals by management. Amaretto injury, Joe Johnson injury along with letting him get away (new owners who were afraid to spend the money), Horry hip check, being in the West, etc., etc. It takes some luck sometimes to win it all. If it wasn't for bad luck, the Sun's would've had no luck at all.

    As I kid that grew up in Phoenix watching this team becoming of fan of the game. I never knew they were ahead of there time. I hated Kobe those early years, when our big 3 split the suns where never this fast paced team. I branched out and became a lebron fan seeing that he might be able to beat kobe. Boi did I see some good mashups but it almost happened that they met in the finals but Cavs lost the east, My hate for Kobe went away when he got hurt, I didn’t hate him cause he was so great, it was just a suns laker rivalry growing up n he would always do Kobe things to win, but after he got hurt didn’t play for some months I missed him, missed his game missed his mamba mentality RIP Kobe RIP GIgi at the end you were one of my favorite ppl. Suns are still my hometown team Cp3 is with us! Lebron still one of my fav players, I’m not a lebron fan as much as I once was I’ve become a fan of the game I have many favorite players out there throughout the league. The league is in good hands.

      ***** You must be a little kid that doesn't watch the Rockets. Gordon = easy 6 MOTY candidate, Bev = DPOTY candidate, Anderson is the best stretch 4 in the league, and Clint is emerging as a better center than Howard ever was for the Rockets. Montrezl Harrell will emerge as one of the better small ball forwards in the league. The Rockets also have better shooters from behind the arc than the Suns ever had. They're on pace to crack 60 wins, have the 3rd best record in the league and can have a legitimate chance to make the WCF. But hey, keep sleeping on them. At least your name is fitting.

    This Suns team was a precursor to modern offenses. However, imho, it was superior for 2 major reasons:
    1. Steve Nash.
    2. Shot selection within the flow of the game rather than forcing bad shots in isolation.
    There are a few modern teams (post-2010) that perfected this style of offense while actually playing defense:
    San Antonio Spurs (2014)
    Golden State Warriors (2015 - 2019)
    The Phoenix Suns did not play team defense very well and they didn't have any individual defenders who were overly remarkable.
    D'Antoni was a genius but was also a bit mad LOL.

    If Nash in his prime replaced Curry in Kerr's system they would have beat the Cavs this Finals. From what I saw during the post season Curry can only contribute when he's making 3s. When his shots aren't falling he is a liability on defense and his passing skills is average. If Nash's shots aren't falling he can always find the open man and draw FT with a 90% at the line. If only Nash played in this era of small ball.

      curry is an elite player beside 3 Pointers, leaves best free throw shooter, Lead league in steals, one of the best dribblers and one of the best passers. The 3 pointers are just what separates him to a whole nother level

      na hes a shooter.
      he cant defend.
      He barely drives.
      that got exposed this entire playoffs,
      He did play great this season though

      Spvcely Averaged 15 points a game besides his 3 pt, Really good defender people sleep on him. He was exposed for being injured, he never played good after that mcl sprain that kept him out 2 weeks

    Is there a reason why they were so bad defensively? Is it cause they played so fast meaning more possessions for the other team? GS played the fastest and had the best defence...

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Patrick F The Warriors were great on both which is why they won it all. But the Suns were not bad defensively. Advanced statistics say they were league average. They just allowed more PPG because of their pace.

    • @MrPaturick
      @MrPaturick 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Coach Daniel by this logic shouldn't GS defence be considered even better than it is because they played fast? In other words, if GS played at a slower pace, their defence would statistically be better?

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick F Possibly yes. But also their offense helped their defense so the they could get back. They scored at such a great rate and when they did they could get back and set their D,

    When you said "post up against Kobe and took advantage of the mismatch" or something like that, please take another look it was not Kobe. Kobe would never let his opponent post him up and score that easily, regardless of the size or position. That was either Smush Parker or some bench player I couldn't remember. Nobody can post up Kobe that easy. Do some homework

      The Golden State Warriors. You know the multiple championships?! Steve Kerr was the GM during this period. He brought the style to Golden State. Kerr wanted to draft Steph Curry for the Suns in 2009 but couldn’t.

    I'm sorry but have you ever coached in your life? Your analysis is basically just stating the obvious. Okay I might be being a little harsh I've coached for 10 years so I guess I'm not your target audience then. Good video though.

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry good spacing, pick and roll reads, and an uptempo offense is not complicated enough for you. This offense is not complex and that's part of the reason it's so good.
