  • In this video I show you how the cockpit lighting is developing, using a home made "light can" to focus the L.E.D.s onto the Fibre Optics to provide lighting for individual switched on the cockpit interior.

That's great, the copper tube also acts as a heat sink.

Looks good. I really enjoy lighting the cockpits of spacecraft. Really make the pilots stand out.

I built one of these up in a similar fashion a few years ago, only to discover at the last gasp that fibre optic cable doesn't like CA glue...it immediately caused the fibre optic to turn brittle and break. I salvaged about 50% of several hours work, and what remains still looks good...but what could have been had I used PVC or zap-a-gap? I'll never know :/

i was just thinking as you said it that the fibre optic in the view screen looked good
    enough as it is..

    Hi.
    Very interesting effect!
I do recall a chin light inside the pilots helmet, be cool to use this method to achieve this

I am just starting the Revell Star Destroyer and want to light up the project. Of all the video and instructions available this is the neatest installation I have seen. Only one question and that is from where did you source the fiber optic cable?

Butlers Modelling The last time I bought fibre optic cable was eBay, but you can try Maplins or RS components.

What kind of paint did you use to paint tbe ends of tbe fiber optic. I didnt know this could be done. I have always seen different color LEDs used.

Where did you get the decals for the cockpit? Like the monitor.

you mean the wires you see through the glass?

Hi, originally you could just see the Fibre Optic cables. I normally use the kit's decals, but occasionally I make my own. I've used screen shots from films, reduced them down to the correct size, then pinned them on normal white paper, then sandwiched the print between to thin sheets of plastic. Plastic from food packaging or thin transparencies, that sort of thing.

you know what would have been a flickering led it would have made the panel light up with moving lights

This is awesome. What sort of glue is white glue as I was just about to use super glue until I saw your video. Thanks so much for the heads up 👍👍

Hi there. I was using "Canopy Glue" Its for gluing transparent plastic. It won't eat into the clear plastic or fibre optics, like Polystyrene cement does.

hey, might be a dumb question but what is that device that you use to send power to the LEDs?

Its a variable DC power supply. It allows you to output specific smooth voltages for developing electronics.

I know its a year ago, but what size fiber optic cable is that?

I think he said it was 0.75 width
