As Ukrainian I can say that Zelenskyi showing his anger at all russians is not a political speech but his true emotion. You can’t respect people who do nothing when their government tries to kill you and your nation everyday. It’s natural feeling of human being. And you don’t want to hear why it is impossible because it’s a question of life and death to you right now. But there are Russians who fight against putin on Ukrainian side and I’m sure that all people of Ukraine have great respect for them.

Hello Natasha, I would like to share with you a personal experience. I work for a multinational company and we used to have offices in both Russia and Ukraine. When the troubles in the eastern Ukraine and Crimea started, we still had meetings with both Russian and Ukrainian colleagues and they were always happy to talk with each other. I was quite surprised about this and asked them at that time if they didnt have bad feelings towards each other given the events happening in eastern Ukraine (this is before the "official" war started). The answer of both of them was that these troubles are the work of politicians, and not of ordinary people. So at that time, they didnt have bad feelings towards each other because of their nationality, which I thought was hopeful and amazing. But then the full invasion into Ukraine started and due to the sanctions towards Russia we had to also close our Russian office. And I realised that after a certain amount of blood flows, it will not be so easy to behave like I described above. You start hating the other party and its of course completely logical. If you loose relatives and friends in the war, it becomes personal. I think too much blood has flowed already. It is really really sad. I really loved to work with both my Russian and my Ukrainian colleagues and I wish that one day this can all be fixed somehow. Your analysis of the speech of Zelensky, and hearing you, as a Russian, saying such sensitive things and expressing even your understanding and appreciation for the president of Ukraine makes me a little bit hopeful again that everything can eventually be repaired as long as the right people get to make the right decisions. It will surely take time but I hope I live to see that day!
did any of your old colleagues come from mixed families (i.e. some living in Russia, others living in Ukraine)? I've witnessed countless families broken up by this war, often with the Russian relatives simply refusing to believe the brutal reality that their cousins and in-laws in Ukraine both tell and show them, all at the hands of the Russian Armed Forces. I don't know if anything will ever be able to mend these wounds 😢
dont bother, she now makes pro ukranian videos, she has become a foreign agent that migrated away from her home country in order to receive youtube revenue. its also not random that she went to georgia
I appreciate your organizing your thoughts with the information. The Russian response to the interview shows that Zelensky is justified in his angry speech when referring to Putin. Imagine trying to make a deal with a liar, criminal who has not kept his past promises. Putin must be defeated for there to be peace. There are no other possibilities.
Vaclav Havel said, "Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out."
Lex is definitely naïve and was unprepared and unqualified to give the interview. Notably, when he visited Kyiv, he chose not to see the mass graves in Bucha. That's an indicator of where his sympathies lie. Also, asking the Ukrainians to forgive is like asking the forgiveness of a rape victim or parents of a murdered child. He is really sickening at some level.

I'm a British expat living in Mongolia. I have a few Russian friends who now live in Mongolia or other countries and who despise the war and Putin. Only one defended Putin and I'm not his friend anymore. I understand it's almost an impossible task to overthrow the Putin regime. Personally, if I was Russian, I'd have left the country too.
We may see the impossible happen yet? If America doesn’t ruin everything by easing the sanctions on Russia, this is the year in which Putin will simply fail to make ends meet. Russia’s economy is burning out like the layers of a giant star, getting bigger, bolder and hotter on the outside, while is rapidly burns through layer after layer of its most precious elements until it all, inevitably, collapses suddenly back onto the core. We may yet live to see Putin’s regime go supernova. They have been dumping a billion Chinese Yuan every two days to prop up the Ruble since December and they’re running out of gold as fast. Unless Putin can produce some miracle from all those diamonds mines he’s stolen in African countries, I simply cannot see any other way for this to go. I don’t know if you were an adult in 1989, when the Berlin Wall came down and Soviet Communism collapsed, but I was. And my biggest take away from that was that anyone who tells you they saw it coming is either misremembering or just making things up. As far as the outside world saw things, the Soviet Empire looked as solid and immovable as ever, with Gorbachev offering small, incremental steps toward peace with the west. Then, boom! Out of a clear blue sky . . . So never say never, my friend. All the stars are aligning and, unless Putin really isn’t as dumb as his recent blunders have suggested over the past decade, and has some master plan that none of us see coming, this year is his final year presiding over his empire. He may hold on to power, who knows? But it won’t be over anything bigger than a medium sized European country called Russia, and no longer containing any of the, “federation,” states. Personally, I don’t think his oligarchs will let him off the hook for that. Have a good laugh at my expense, this time next year, if I’m wrong. But, just remember, this only works so long as America doesn’t help Putin out.
Im glad you chose to discuss this, i was curious to know what you thought of it. My own ancestors fled Stalinist Russia so i completely understand expats like you. Thanks!
I think lex meant that Russia is in a better place now then it was back then . I think that’s what he meant by Putin cares . I don’t think Putin does care but he meant it’s in a better place
Lex Friedman's show mainly appeals to Trump supporters. They equate occasional cussing with powerful emotion, and emotion appeals to them deeply. Zelenskyy carefully tuned his words to reach them. They are the people most likely to urge Congress to deny him arms, but if he can win them over, he can win this war. He has often shown that he knows perfectly well how to behave diplomatically when among diplomats, but he's also a former comedian who knows how to read his audience. In this case it's no joke, and he's not performing for tips, he's performing for the survival of his people.
Good luck with that. We are literally burning and broke, with millions of people out of work and homless and a culture war but hey, let's send another billion dollars to a foreign country.
Anyone with a drop of common sense understands that Ukraine will not win the war under any circumstances. Anyone who claims otherwise is either a fool or a liar. Continuing the war, no matter what Congress decides, only affects the degree of destruction of Ukraine. Zelensky cannot fail to understand this. He is for the war, since he personally gets rich thanks to it and remains in power and controls the flow of money. The end of the war means the collapse of his political career at the very least.

Zelenskyy's home language was Russian. He did not learn Ukrainian until he was a teenager. Zelenskyy was born in Kryvyi Rih, a city in central Ukraine where Russian was commonly spoken, particularly during the Soviet era and its immediate aftermath. Many areas in Ukraine, especially in the eastern and southern parts of the country, have historically been Russian-speaking due to the region's ties to the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Zelenskyy's family spoke Russian at home, a common practice among many Ukrainian families, especially in regions like Kryvyi Rih. Zelenskyy began learning Ukrainian as a teenager and eventually became fluent, using it more consistently in public life as his career progressed. Many Ukrainians, including Zelenskyy, are bilingual in Ukrainian and Russian, often switching between the two languages depending on the context. The use of Russian versus Ukrainian has been a sensitive political and cultural issue in Ukraine, particularly after the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. As president, Zelenskyy has actively promoted Ukrainian language and culture, while also advocating for inclusivity toward Russian-speaking Ukrainians. His ability to navigate these linguistic and cultural dynamics has been seen as an important aspect of his leadership, especially in countering Russian propaganda that claims discrimination against Russian speakers in Ukraine. Putin needs to be removed, whether by his death or his incarceration and trial for war crimes. Putin's regime needs to be dismembered, and all those members of his regime (from the level of foot soldier up to top national official) who have played a role in the war crimes committed by the regime need to be investigated, and if found probably guilty tried by a tribunal similar to the Nuremberg trials. The Russian Federation must be brought to its knees and forced to undergo massive reforms to government, social norms and jurisprudence. The Orc regime must not only be totally defeated, but the prospect of any similar regime ever again arising in the Russian Federation of any of its constituent states must be squelched as vigorously as possible. Freedom for Ukrainians and for Russians and for ALL humanity. END to all Orcs.
And what happens when Putin is overthrown and a person like Medvedev comes to power? and thanks for admitting you are a racist rusophobe who is calling the death to all Russians. Something the Ukrainian polticans called the people of Donbas 'subhuman" its crazy to think Russia helping those who are being oppressed is called aggression lol

I don't understand how anyone looking at the last ~30 years of Russian history can seriously say that anyone at the top of the Russian government cares about the country. They spend massive income from selling unreplaceable resources everywhere in the world, buying toys for themselves. They haven't invested in infrastructure, industry, or jobs. They just bought expensive toys. That's all, pathetic, childish and utterly irresponsible.
True. While they were enriching themselves, they also neglected their Military funding. That's only part of the reason they have been so reliant on Iranian arms and now Nth Korean soldiers just to stay in this War.

Did someone like medvechuk earn the money to buy it legitimately. Well if you think that you are incredibly naive
Big respect Natasha for acknowledging the truths. It’s not easy to be proud, but yet face the facts. Many Russians feel the same, but sadly many do not and don’t really have a good reason for this war at all. Best of luck and hopefully we see peace and a good future for both countries, sometime in our lifetime.
There is a fantastic reason for this war: it was provoked by the US. For national self-interest. Period. Zelensky doesn't read books. And nor do the "educated" Russians who live in an echo chamber and fellate their Western friends by "acknowledging" what those uneducated Western friends think.

They ARE corruption. Not surprised, the majority of podcasters lean to the right and live in an echo chamber. Putin only cares about enriching himself by stealing from Russian citizens.

I think that is how Putin should be measured - by the number of Russians who fled the country plus the number killed plus the number injured plus the economic devastation in the provinces.
You are very charitable and show a lot of understanding of how the war affects Ukrainian's attitudes to Russians. It is sad that Russia has chased intelligent, articulate and perceptive people like you into exile. It is also sad and worrying how autocratic, bigoted and lawless people similar to Putin are coming to power in the West. It feels like a new dark age is descending on the world. But we have to have hope that despite this, in the end, good will triumph over evil. Light will dispel darkness.
What I see is a lot, and I mean A LOT of Russian has real trouble to distinct SSSR and Russia. They dont see the Soviet union as "common country" a federation of countries. They see Soviet union as "prior form of Russia". As in Ukraine, and all others belonged to Russia.
I appreciate hearing your take on this. Fridman is incredibly naive. I had never heard of him before. I guess Zelensky saw some benefit to doing this interview. He basically scrunched Fridman into a little wad and stuffed him in his pocket. The reactions of Russian media were silly nonsense. So shocked by swearing. Those Russians crying about broken places in Ukraine is mindboggling considering the wasteland their military is creating there. Things like this make me wonder if I'm experiencing reality or if my caretaker will soon wake me up to take a pill.
These people like to resort to pearl clutching. They set up all these purity tests, like no swearing or criticizing someone’s family life, for their opponents but they will never fundamentally accept them because their values are different. These people love Elon but he can say r*tard and divorce multiple women, be an adulterer, solicit s*x services and have children outside of marriage. They’re hypocrites pure and simple and there’s practically no use in meeting them where they are. If we try to meet them halfway they refuse to move at all.
I think the swearing was mostly directed at the guys who watch that kind of channel... Zelenskiy's a smart guy, he know he has to come across as an alpha for people like that to listen. And if he managed to let off a bit of steam in the process, well, I'm sure it was good for him. I've learned a couple of swearwords from him recently that I'll never forget 😁

Thank you, Natasha! An intelligent, perceptive, honest, heartfelt analysis. I agree 100% about Zenensky, Putin- and Fridman, who though he is a martial arts student, is a novice compared to Putin, a judoka who always wins his matches (or else!), and especially to Zelensky, who is the only real martial artist of the three, in terms of his spirit, which is deep and impeccable. That's the pretense he takes on, but beneath the pretense he's just another alt-right social media pipeline pro-Putin and pro-Maga "brocaster." His style ma not be as overt and blatant as the others; but that's what it is nonetheless.

I find it very difficult to believe anyone thinks Putin care about Russia or Russians, in fact I would even say they're lying or maybe be extremely ignorant considering what's happening in Russia the last 25 years.
It's hard to believe Zelinsky does not care for his own people by not sharing all the money the u.s tax payers have paid for his military and government controlled by nato towards the Ukrainian people. Billions of dollars where? It's in the pockets of u.s./nato military industrial complex and other western corporations like black rock and black stone which own Ukrainian land and resources. This is the ugly truth. Nato put Zelinsky in power, overthrew the legitimate government of Victor Yanokovich back in 2014, murdered thousands of civilians in the Donbass region because they would not accept Zelinsky's illegitimate government financed by nato.
I don’t think they mean that they just mean he does more than others in the past . Russia has a terrible history which sucks but it’s reality . The war will be over in a week or 2 so it does not matter

The CIA and U.S. state department overthrew the legitimately elected government of Ukraine in 2014. They just tried to do the same thing in Georgia, South Korea and Romania - you don’t pay attention very well do you?
Lex finding positives of Putin as a former Russian is the strange thing, like the guy left in the 90's or something but somehow thinks Putin loves all Russians equally yet Putin shuts down any kind of speech he doesn't agree with lol. Some can't remove the dogma they were brought up in
As a Ukrainian I am deeply grateful and amazed to be honest. Your position and analysis of the interview seem uncommonly sane. Thank you for your work!
A Dutch comedian during the Reagan era would joke that he would run for US president, because if a second-rate actor could do it, a first-rate comedian was even better.
I’m Ukrainian and I appreciate this. Once all of this is over, it will take people like us to bridge the massive gap between us. We will have a job to do.
Hi Natasha. Good to see you again. I was a bit surprised by this video. Haven't seen you make such clear statements about Russia and the psychedelic mushroom eating leadership before. You did a very good job. Take care and stay safe.
6:56 I believe that at some level, the goal of all political leaders is to stay in power. If you're an autocrat, the way to do that is to eliminate those who may oppose you by any means and to cover up matters that would reflect badly on yourself. If you're a democratically elected leader, that means providing good governance and creating policies that appeal to people who might reelect you. The difference is accountability. Zelensky is accountable to his people. Putin has gone to great effort not to be accountable to anyone but himself.
I am pro democracy, but this is why I must add: for democracy, there is also a populism strategy, where you try to maximize appeal, and gain short-term benefit during your presidency, at the expense of the person after you who will inherit all your problems. It is a big enemy and there is no great solution in sight except the high education and conscientiousness level among the population, which is incredibly hard to achieve.
This…. You made sense but lex meant by Putin cares is that he sees how Russia is in the best place it has been in 120 years . Thats all he meant he don’t mean Putin is good or just. Putin is awful and scum . The war wil end in a few weeks so none of this matters I hope you guys can go back home I am so happy the war will end
@peezieforestem5078 Agree. I'm sure there are other special cases as well; I was simplifying for the sake of brevity. My point is; accountability is the best way to safeguard your power structure against the darker side of human nature, and democracy is the best way to achieve that.
Your voice is very important. We all must be careful about ill-informed judgments of people in countries not our own. Here in America, we are under the serious threat of our democracy weakening or ending. In discussions on other videos and other social media platforms, some people are saying, "You voted for him." That is not anywhere near a full picture of what's going on here. Trump has support from less than 22% of the American people. ⤵️ There are several channels of Russian people that I follow .. mostly musicians. I know there are many good Russians. Nevertheless Natasha lives partly in denial regarding the perception of Russians. She can not fully comprehend and accept that Russians are largely despised like Germans during WW2. There is no difference in the external perception. And Zelensky largely meant the words exactly like he spoke them out, because that's precisely how the majority of Ukrainians feel. This is not just a tactical phrase he had to make for a certain domestic political reason.
@@sk.43821 When your friends or family are killed and your and their homes are destroyed that you worked all life for you can't really blame them for hating Russians as whole but that's the thing. After war there will always be path for redemption but it will be up to Russians if they will choose it or not. So yea I agree with you but I think Zelensky doesn't hate people like Natasha just because they are Russian. I'm not saying Zelensky is lying either I'm just saying that they are blinded by raw survival right now. That's how you survive. It's not how you live once dust settles. And yes some Ukranians will forever hate Russians but some will process it after the war and find peace with them if Russian themselves choose path of regret and structural change of their mindset like Germans did after WW2. But noone can and should expect that out of Ukranians. That is their good will if they choose to forgive after the war as their country was being destroyed together with their people that they will never get back.

Best way to help Russians is to defeat Putin.
It's very stupid to run away from your home country. Sometimes you just need to stop doomscrolling the news and live your life.
Putin just needs to get out of Ukraine. And STOP fixing elections in Georgia.

Trump voters are hopeless
Good luck with that. We are literally burning and broke, with millions of people out of work and homless and a culture war but hey, let's send another billion dollars to a foreign country.
Lex is a huuuge centrist, so no wonder.
He only did this for his personal advancement, seeking popularity , simply like Elon
Excellent debate, excellent video Natahsa...Spassk..I remember, you had so much questions..Today I finally understand and agree 100% your point, as a Russian from Spassk that you are.

I've been listening to the interview for 30 seconds until Lex Friedman said "People like Donald Trump and Elon Musk really care, uh, about fighting corruption".
They ARE corruption. Not surprised, the majority of podcasters lean to the right and live in an echo chamber. Putin only cares about enriching himself by stealing from Russian citizens.
Yes, when he said that, it reminded me when Michael says to Kay, in The Godfather, that his father is just like a President or Congressman and she responds saying "Don't be naïve Michael", politicians don't have people killed and he retorts, "who's being naïve, Kay?"

I find it very difficult to believe anyone thinks Putin care about Russia or Russians, in fact I would even say they're lying or maybe be extremely ignorant considering what's happening in Russia the last 25 years.

@peezieforestem5078 Agree. I'm sure there are other special cases as well; I was simplifying for the sake of brevity. My point is; accountability is the best way to safeguard your power structure against the darker side of human nature, and democracy is the best way to achieve that.

@@johnleebold8894 What Putin does is what's evil, not what the USA has been doing for the past century, invading dozens of nations and slaughtering innumerable defenseless, innocent people.
Excellent analysis of this interview and the reaction to it. Thank you for providing this "insider" perspective for the rest of the world.
Les Fridman has said many times he wants to interview putin. So, he panders and plays up to him, eg, saying "putin loves russia."
Your comments are very well thought through, Natasha. I wish you all safe passage on all your travels.❤
Natasha, I want to congratulate you on such a grate job you did on this interview. I totally agree with you. Keep up the good work and keep safe.
That's the kind of analysis that is missing everywhere in every political situation; an analysis made by a linguist who scrutinize the language used and the choice of words. All that from someone who knows Russian cultur and is able to take a step back for a better global view. Good work!
Happy New Year to you, Natasha. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Fridman interview.
Natasha just know. I'm with you. I'm your fellow countryman. I think the same way.
Thank you Natasha 🐶🙆😻 for sharing your views! 💐 Wish you beautiful wonderful year!
Thank you Natasha; very clear, honest and refreshing analysis 👍!! Much appreciated!
Natasha thank you so much! I'm so happy to see you didn't take Zelensky saying about hating Russians too close to your heart. He had to say this as many Ukranians died by Russian hands. It shows me how you are not blinded by your emotions and can see truth past them. I wish you all well and yeahh much cares and loves your way!!! You are a great person!!
I don’t get this she should not like him either . He just is taking money to have Ukrainians die to line his pockets also
@@sk.43821 When your friends or family are killed and your and their homes are destroyed that you worked all life for you can't really blame them for hating Russians as whole but that's the thing.
