Interestingly enough, the Expos & Dodgers both fell short in their divisional races to the Phillies & Astros, respectively, at the end of the 1980 season. The '81 NLDS presented an opportunity for both the Expos & Dodgers to avenge their defeats of the previous year against those same opponents, and they both succeeded.

What I find interesting is that Don Sutton left the Dodgers in 1980, and Reggie Smith’s skills were diminishing in 1981. So the Dodgers brought up young Fernando Valenzuela and Pedro Guerero to fill the void.
Does anybody know the distribution for this game. Both NLDS went 5 games that year and since were both being played at the same time NBC had to go with a regional broadcast. ABC had a game five that night in the American League but since only one ALDS went the full distance they got a nationally televised game(along with Game 4)
Part of the reason for that was MLB had to squeeze in an extra round of playoffs because of the MLB strike and spreading games apart over multiple times on multiple channels on the same day wasn't as easy to due back during the Big Three Network era when pay/cable television wasn't a big enough option yet.

Ryan ran out of gas in the 6th, but gave up 2 hits to that point. His team scored 0 runs. Ryan also pitched a complete game 2-hitter in Gm 1 of this series. I hope that counts. In Gm 5 of 80, he ran out of gas in the 7th, but the Astros could muster only 2 runs against Marty Bystrom (who?) to that point. In Gm 2 of that series Ryan pitched into the 7th and left with the score 2-2. Fun fact: The Astros also lost Ryan's last postseason appearance. Gm 5 86 NLCS vs the Mets. Ryan pitched 9 innings, gave up only 2 hits, and had 12 Ks, but the Mets had Dwight Gooden in his prime. Mets won in the 12th. The lesson as always: Context is your friend.

What the heck was the last Astro batter thinking?
Agreed - not only did he fail to run right away, his sliding into 1st base - rather than running through the bag - probably caused him to be out.
I had forgotten how poor the Dodger infield defense was
Imagine being that dude and not running. Probably haunted him for the rest of his life.
