Because my savings is not at a level I'm comfortable with, I wanted to let it grow untouched. Plus, this is a good way to identify areas of cost reduction. Why pay more? Thanks for watching!
Happy Anniversary to you and Mrs. Buzz. My husband retired last year from his barber shop in Swanton, Ohio after over 50 years of cutting hair. I am "semi-retired" and work three days a week. We enjoy watching your channel from Bryan, Ohio, home of the etch-a-sketch and Dum Dum suckers!
Thank you so much for the anniversary wishes! I still go to the same barbershop that my mom took me to when I was 5 years old. Bill retired a few years back and his son runs it now. I need to go this week! Thank you for watching. I didn't know about the etch-a-sketch and suckers! Bill used to give me one of the Dum Dum suckers when I was little. Maybe it's a barber thing? Lol. Buzz, love your experiment and LOVE your monthly updates on social security alone retirement. Thank you! I am trying to figure out our retirement, social security, and Medicare. Your way of explaining is so clear to me. I appreciate you. And hello from Cincy!
Saw others stories so here's ours. Expectations are key. We are very happy. Retired at 62 on 2k combined Social Security. Frequent questions we get- What if something breaks down? We have no dishwasher, dryer or washing machine *gasp* lol. We don't want your free machine but thx, it takes up room. Soak our clothes in baking soda & water in the tub, place in baskets in the waterfall to rinse. Hang upstairs or outside to dry. We buy expensive, quality outdoorsy clothes (REI, Eddie Bauer, etc). Washing machines/Dryers & chemical based laundry soap destroy clothes. Our clothes last a decade+ I often just re-sew a button or I have dyes to add color when it fades. They fit better and we look wealthy like the other folks driving a nice cars or E-Cars while dressed nice. We are often seen riding nice E-Bikes too, usually w/ a trailer if food foraging or grocery shopping that day. We cycle to stay fit. Own an ugly 2010 gas pick up for winter but we hardly go out those 4 months a year, especially in snow. Our House is 80% fire-proof. No trees to fall or other acts of God is likely. Half steel, including the roof so it's not a pretty house. Modest for sure but new inside. Very Insulated house so it's often not too hot or too cold. Hubby is very. handy, he was in Construction. Winter is Dec-March, we get snow, so we keep a fire going in the fireplace. A wall mini-split is turned on before company arrives so the living room temp is stable. Nearby lakes provide water to cool us down in summer. Incidentals: Electric toothbrushes on high setting is like a dental cleaning. 1x a year cleanings, we pay cash from the HSA. No health insurance. Baking soda+turmeric as toothpaste most days. Baking soda is my shampoo Sun mornings. Wed I use a Costco Brand Shampoo. Shampooing hair too much strips it, it won't look good. Mine is very full. Use brades for your hairstyle, they are beautiful & free. Veges are sprouts we've grown in glass jars, they are at peak nutrition, very cheap to order organic seeds. We also grow potatoes which we have way too many so we give them away. They really reproduce for free. Garlic, onions, peppers, cherry tomatoes, kale, etc. we grow too, basically what is almost free to us to grow. Trade seeds with other folks. A Farmers Market is handy, we shop/trade a few times a month. To truly be happy, you should grow your own food, have the ability to trade with others, and always pick right before consumption when nutrients is highest. Nature is our love- ducks, hens (eggs), goats (healthy milk/cheese, etc) and our dog. He's costly, it's difficult to find cheap organ meats for his homemade dog food. We buy bulk turkeys on sale around thanksgiving so 50% of his food is turkey based. Some is egg based, the rest is red meat. Add in certain veges & fruits, maybe some rice. Our retirement savings is about 90k. HSA has about 7k. We add to the savings each month. Neighbor shares his internet w/us, we help him.
There are inexpensive ways to live our lives if we think a bit differently. Certainly not for everyone because we can become set in our ways. Talking to my wife she said she would miss her washer and dryer. Thank you for sharing your experience! Buzz
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Yes it's not for everyone for sure. I love your videos Buzz, you are so entertaining and appreciate the time you take to get into detail. I just went back to work this week to build up our retirement. Not a bad gig, 3 days straight for $25 an hour and I sleep 11 hrs of the shift. I can charge my electric car at work too. A nice way to save up some cash at home.
Happy Anniversary! I vote for keep doing the monthly’s. I am amazed on how low a few of your expenses are, like auto insurance. However, in other categories, it is lower for us vs higher for you. It all balances out. You keep doing you. There are always people who judge you. Thanks for your honesty!
Prices will vary. How manty times have we heard that? True for our expenses too. If we are fortunate to stay in the green, I'll be happy. Let the savings grow. Buzz
Yes, Mint! My wife and I switched over a few years from T-Mobile (before Mint was bought by T-Mobile). Highly recommend. The process to switch was very simple. And, we do exactly what you said - be a little smarter with using our wi-fi, at home and other places. We still travel and need to use maps, but it doesn’t use as much data as you might think.
It does seem that certain carriers are trying to reduce costs. Mint is leading the way in my opinion. I have the T-Mobile Internet now and I save $10/month off the home Internet. I switched the landline to OOMA and they're porting out landline number today. My monthly expenses will now be cut by close to $50. Buzz
Another great month. Seeing these updates makes me realize how fast time is passing! Also... I just can't get over how expensive esting out is these days. 😮 congratulations on your wedding anniversary!
Next month I'm retired one year! Amazing how quick that went. I'm loving every minute of it! Thank you for the anniversary wishes. Have a good Holiday. Buzz
I enjoy your channel . I think it helps people who for what ever reason didn't have alot for retirement. Your very down to earth and practical and I think people appreciate that.
I am in Medina Ohio and retired for 12 years, I track our expenses loosely and have not dipped into our savings either. I include house and car maintenance along with equipment upkeep. I think some of your expenses are rather high for just 2 people but you do you. :=) Sometimes I think we should spend more money! Good to see a channel so close to us.
You're not far from me. Last time in Medina we went to Castle Noel. I'm a huge Christmas fan. We keep whittling expenses down as we get better at this retirement gig. Buzz
Well documented Buzz highlighting your expenses vs SS payments. Breaking this down helps determine whether you are within your budgeted amount monthly. Great job!
Tracking your Expense is one of the Main Keys to a Successful Working mans Retirement, I have been tracking my Expenses for 7 years diligently, and it gives you confidence and a Feeling of Security especially during the first years...I have tried to stop tracking expenses but its such a habit its just a natural thing for me to do...and I believe every one should keep track...Life style Creep is a real thing and so is inflation..Keeping track helps you make the need adjustments to your Budget... Have a Great Day Buzz Al
I enjoy this and the lives the best!! Alway informing and interesting! Getting projects finished before it gets colder in Alabama.....DON'T LAUGH!!! It does get cold down here!!! What a great breakdown! I'm with you Mr. Buzz and I like the new lid!!!! Again, keep them coming Mr. Buzz!!!!
"We also want to live" with 5 words it puts it into prospective. What works for you is great, you're doing great. Your great personality is a wonderful perk. I clean the house while listening to you
Hi Buzz, from Houston, TX! You are doing great!! I love that you are aware of the categories you can do a little better in, but as you say, "you do you and I'll do me". I am happy for you and Mrs. Buzz! I am learning a lot from you, and certainly enjoy the videos immensely. Three years and 6 months to go! Take care!
Of course people dont "want" to live just on SS, but many people do not have savings, pensions, 401K, or stock market options. They have to learn to live with what they have. Thank you Buzz for showing people how to budget for this.
Happy anniversary to you and the Mrs. I agree life is to be enjoyed. Can’t be all work and no play, so to speak. Thanks for another great video and sharing.
California doesn't tax Social Security, found that out when I applied for SS turning 62. I was shocked. California is famous for taxes, hearing this news put a big smile on my face that's for sure.
We are going to retire next April and that’s our plans exactly. We bought a campground property on a lake like 5 miles from our home just this yr. We spent a big portion of our summer there meeting new friends to hopefully fill the gap after we leave our jobs. We live in north eastern Indiana so we have to figure something out for the winter months for socializing. Sure am looking forward to not having those have too and not having to get up at 3 to be to work by 5. For 38 yrs we’ve done that. So ready.
Happy Anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Buzz! Hello from Swanton, OH. I was subscribed to your channel but for some reason was unsubscribed, so I subscribed again. Been hearing other channels talking about this happening so you may want to mention this in case it happens to anyone else. Love your videos and looking forward to seeing it grow.
Social Security may be the only option for many. Singles have it much harder. Add to that someone that is suddenly widowed after being used to that high income in retirement 'living only on SS' and you have a whole group of people that are really struggling to survive. Have you done a video on what it might look like for your household if one of you were to pass? It will eventually happen. Will the surviving spouse be able to keep up?
I seen real world examples of the surviving spouse living on social security. The problem is that many retirees decide to stay in the same area base on the old income. That's a big problem. Plan for moving/downsizing to survive or just get somebody/organization to help pay the bills.
In our case, whether being smart or lucky, we keep life insurance policies. She will receive $200,000 which should get her through pretty well. For people who didn't save anything and don't have life insurance it definitely can be a struggle. Buzz
Thanks for doing this Buzz. I too am tracking our expenses and we are doing just fine on our SS. We live in NJ and I am honestly shocked that we haven’t touched savings yet. Being mortgage free and debt free PRIOR to retirement was key for us.
Thanks Buzz. We live under 2 social securities and 1 pension that will eventually run out in 8 years. We will be out of all debt in 3 years and put the rest to savings. You monthly social security budget gives me a realistic view down the road so I can make adjustments now.
Hey - just stumbled on your channel. Another Cleve guy here (eastern burb) - enjoying the content. I'll be 62 in Jan and just lost my job so I'm trying to work through what I want to do!
You are my husband’s age and I’m 63 - we’re looking to retire in 2026 so this is very interesting for us! We plan to try to live on mostly SS too - you have a lot of similar things on your list that we will have. Thanks!
Thanks for checking in! We try to watch our money but at the same time if we want to eat out, we will. We really want to stay even on income versus expenditures and let our savings grow. You're going to love retirement! Buzz
New subscribe here. I quit my job (retired) in May 2022. I decided to start taking SS in September. Im 64. I am quite excited about it since I've been living off my savings for over two years. I think I can live within it.
You are bold to reveal your finances so a big thank you. It is very helpful. As I look at your list the grocery line item seems very high for 2. Have you scrutinized it? For instance, I have good experience with a weekly meal kit program from Every Plate. For $50 a week I get 3 meals, 2 servings each. Covers the “What’s for dinner” discussion. Delivered to my door. Zero waste because most everything is provided in the right amounts. Lots of variety. It cuts down on trips to the grocery store and still leaves nights to do your own thing. It is not for those who don’t like to cook or the clean up afterwards. Sometimes my wife will eat the second portion. When she doesn’t I get either another dinner ready to heat up or a lunch. I bet it would save you about 1/3 of your monthly expense over buying prepackaged food from Sam’s and Cosco.
Love your videos! I appreciate the honesty and openness. It's like talking to an old friend. I think I need to move to Ohio. Here in central Florida, prices are so high, especially home insurance.

Congrats on your Anniversary! Thanks for sharing your information it is so encouraging to know that people can live off social security. I hope to be there soon. Love the hat!😊
My opinion Buzz is enjoy your life and you never know what tomorrow will bring .If you wanna eat or buy lottery tickets go right ahead. You worked hard your whole life.
Few years ago had a tv antenna installed into my attic- get tons (60?). of free channels and all local ones. So get to watch sports on these channels too! Best move ever!!! We have Netflix, MAX with phone service. Much cheaper than cable or satellite tv.
Good job and Happy Anniversary ! our 41st was on June 30. Also congrats on the lotto win, I play around with that too, cause ya never know and you can't win if you don't play :)
Thank you. Regarding lottery I previously told the story of Roger, a guy I worked with, whose wife threw all his stuff on the lawn, winning 8 million. It can happen! Buzz
Hey Buzz love your videos I am listening and learning about your retirement journey. I’m looking to retire the end of December 2024. I am hoping to listing my expenses as well for myself. I and my wife are going to travel and see this great country’s National Parks.
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! Won't be long now! The National Parks would be an excellent start to any retirement. Thanks for watching. Buzz
Buzz ,you are right. Got to Live! Everybody has things that are important to them. For right now I would rather try and save money on food, cable, streaming, etc. Spending more on things like fishing. I am already so beat up from working that I have to enjoy things while I still am able to do them. I just pulled on of those 39 cent a pound hams out of my freezer to double smoke. It is always great to buy things when they are cheap and fill the freezer.
It's good to track and measure and have a goal of reducing costs but still enjoy our retired life. There is a balance. Thank you for sharing and I can smell that ham from here. Do you put cloves in it when smoking? Buzz
Nice to hear that you have insurance to help when one of you passes away. I wished my auto insurance was that low. I did give up cable and only have internet with a couple of streaming services.
I hooked up T-mobile internet at $41 dollars versus $70 from my cable provider. Speed test is actually faster. Still trying to get my wife on board with TH-cam tv. Buzz
That’s about what we get with SS. We lived on that for about a year before we started drawing on our retirement savings. I’m so happy I was always a saver in the 401k. Your real estate taxes are really high. We moved to Arkansas when we retired and the freeze your taxes when you are 65, and you get a homestead credit of 400 something. 🎉I couldn’t believe it. We left Missouri, bought a more expensive house, and everything is cheaper. Taxes and insurance. Our real estate taxes is 750 a year. I wanted a house with zero stairs and low maintenance. Rock yard. In a safer area than Kansas City. It was kinda hard to start drawing on our retirement. But I don’t want to leave it all to the kids either. We are going to travel some in the next few years. Live a little, before we are to old.
I pressure can meat on sale so it's shelf stable for years. Freezers break, but I do have two chest freezers full, too. Chuck Roast was on sale for $3.97 a pound and I bought 14 of them. Canned them all for instant stew or roast beef. Nice thing is I get to reuse the jars forever until I drop them, now getting older I'm dropping things more.
"but we want to live" Yes indeedy, it's all about balance. We save a bit here so we can spend a bit there. And nobody but you can say how much value you place on each of those expenditures. And I totally second the hot pot / crock pot meals. We do a lot of roasts and stews in the winter (not to mention hot dishes since we are in the midwest after all). First a nice hot meal on a chilly day is comforting, second we just enjoy that type of meal, and third it's inexpensive. Some veggies, a chuck roast, spices, and we've got the core of at least two good meals for us.
Congrats on your anniversary. What a milestone. Glad you splurged on a nice meal out. But I have to say, I couldn't believe how much it was.....for a restaurant. Wow. Stuff is really going up, isn't it!!!
Your details have affirmed for me some of the figures I have included in my plans. I realize our utility costs may not be exactly the same, but we're probably in same ballpark. My goal is to live within SS too, and I'm delaying taking it with that hope in mind (I was let go a few years ago but my living situation allows me to get by on part-time job for now). Thanks for your openness.
I love that you’re holding your own! And congratulations on being retired for one year! It’ll be interesting if you get antsy this second winter and feel the itch for a part-time job or seasonal job.
Happy anniversary. I certainly have no business criticizing your spending given my burn rate here in California. I was talking to one of my tenants today and feeling badly about raising her rent and she was sweet and says I understand what is going on. She told me that her electric bill for her 980 sq ft apartment is $300 a month and the gas is $100 a month. And she told me the other tenants are paying similarly. I was blown away by that. Maybe my solar panels are saving me more than I thought.
Thanks for getting into the minutia of household finances Buzz, I find it interesting. I compare it with my own situation which in some aspects is similar to yours. Some of our thought processes are the same to some degree kindred spirits. Good job on video.
I'm glad you enjoyed your anniversary! That's where we are going for our anniversary next month, too! We found a long lost gift card recently for Red Lobster from about 5 years ago (for a whopping $25). That's O.K., every little bit helps. 😊
They're closing one in a heavily populated area, but my wife thinks it's because of all the competition around it. Hopefully the one we go to won't close.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Buzz, I agree, please keep the monthly budget going as well as your grocery haul. Enjoy all your video's, happy belated anniversary as well.
Sup Buzz. Thanks for the sharing and knowledge. I see myself in 5-6 years and our SS will not come close to your income. Luckily I saved some 401k and hopefully that supplement takes care of the extras such as hobbies or road trips. A five day road would probably equate to at least: hotel $150/day; gas $50/day; anyway .. looks expensive. So hopefully i can enjoy a part-time job for some walking around money.
I just retired 2 weeks ago since work offered a good package with medical, so retirement came earlier than I expected, although I had planned to quit sooner than later. Will have to adjust the budget some and figure out this new chapter. Excited but doesn't seem real yet.
Never been watching a video where I saw the views and likes jump up right before my eyes. Good job :). Doing what you are doing-Trying to live frugally on SS /PT job and major expenses out of modest savings. Always good to track and watch expenses on paper. Will go look at Mrs. Buzz, did see short on Christmas tree fair entry (yay, have one too, first entry, blue ribbon). Nothing wrong with not donating in retirement (but I do). Nice!-On the Live giveaway. Happy Anniversary! Fun hat!
I’m new so this is the first one of these I have seen. I think it’s impressive you can do it on SS alone. I’m glad you are splurging a little. You definitely have to live. I think I will have one advantage in retirement that I have now. I have a friend who is a farmer and we split animals. What that means is I get all my beef and pork once a year but I get a really great price.Even with that the price on a percentage basis went up a lot over the last two years but still substantially cheaper then any store. Nice presentation.
Getting that yearly buy does help a lot. I purposely don't buy steak like i used to due to cost. I remember buying sirloin steaks for 5 something a lb. A good sale at Sams Club on strip steak is $10.98/lb. Crazy.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage I pay including processing $4.79 lb the last time for my beef. Think I got around 170 pounds. That’s steaks, roasts, ground beef. No tenderloins tho. Owner keeps those lol.
Your experiment is probably one of the most valuable lessons on the internet. You are helping a LOT of people my friend. 🙂

Buzz
You had me at "We are very happy." 🙂
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Yes it's not for everyone for sure. I love your videos Buzz, you are so entertaining and appreciate the time you take to get into detail. I just went back to work this week to build up our retirement. Not a bad gig, 3 days straight for $25 an hour and I sleep 11 hrs of the shift. I can charge my electric car at work too. A nice way to save up some cash at home.

Thank you for the kind comment. Buzz
Thank you. I hope it at least shows people what not to do. Lol
Great job!

Thank you and thank you. Buzz
Of course people dont "want" to live just on SS, but many people do not have savings, pensions, 401K, or stock market options. They have to learn to live with what they have. Thank you Buzz for showing people how to budget for this.

Thank you for starting out with "old business" at the beginning! This was great. Please do this each time.

California doesn't tax Social Security, found that out when I applied for SS turning 62. I was shocked. California is famous for taxes, hearing this news put a big smile on my face that's for sure.
There's only a handful of states that do tax it. Getting fewer and fewer every year.
So ready.
Thanks for sharing your story. 3 am in the winter is definitely a drag.
I do hear that once in a while. Hopefully they get it figured out. I had to look up where Swanton was at. Close to Toledo. Thanks for watching! Buzz
Keep the updates coming past December! Congrats on another positive month.
Buzz
I went through that exercise and found my wife and I would be ok in the event one of us passes without life insurance.
Thanks for doing this Buzz. I too am tracking our expenses and we are doing just fine on our SS. We live in NJ and I am honestly shocked that we haven’t touched savings yet. Being mortgage free and debt free PRIOR to retirement was key for us.
Debt free. Same here. Glad it's working out! Buzz
Thanks Buzz. We live under 2 social securities and 1 pension that will eventually run out in 8 years. We will be out of all debt in 3 years and put the rest to savings. You monthly social security budget gives me a realistic view down the road so I can make adjustments now.
I'm glad it helped. Keep your eye on those expenses. Buzz
I appreciate your openness and transparency ... and courage.
Thanks! I appreciate you watching. Buzz
Hey - just stumbled on your channel. Another Cleve guy here (eastern burb) - enjoying the content. I'll be 62 in Jan and just lost my job so I'm trying to work through what I want to do!
Under different circumstances I would have found another job and waited to collect SS but my health and mind made me call it a career.
Welcome aboard. We have a great group of subscribers here. Buzz
I reveal because in 10 years no one will remember or care. I'll check into that food you propose.
Love your videos! I appreciate the honesty and openness. It's like talking to an old friend.
I think I need to move to Ohio. Here in central Florida, prices are so high, especially home insurance.

Few years ago had a tv antenna installed into my attic- get tons (60?). of free channels and all local ones. So get to watch sports on these channels too! Best move ever!!! We have Netflix, MAX with phone service. Much cheaper than cable or satellite tv.
I know but I can't convince my wife. It's either divorce or cable TV. Maybe I should flip a coin.

Buzz
Not when I smoke it. the other way is to crockpot it for a pulled pork like effect.
Keep this coming please! Very enlightening. Love your channel and your personality!

You made a lot of great moves that are paying off well. Good job! Thanks for sharing. Buzz

My wife is afraid to can. But we do freeze any deals I find at Sams or Costco.
Hi buzz

Hey 007 good to see you! Buzz
You're speaking my food language! By the time I finished reading your words I wanted to jump up and make a beef stew! Lol Buzz
Congrats on your anniversary. What a milestone. Glad you splurged on a nice meal out. But I have to say, I couldn't believe how much it was.....for a restaurant. Wow. Stuff is really going up, isn't it!!!
Right? And I didn't even get the slice of cake and one scoop of ice cream for $10!
Thank you doing this, Buzz. Really useful exercise. And, I didn't know Ohio was a no SS tax state!
Thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback. Buzz
Love the Hoolihan shirt, greetings from Brunswick!
One of my favorites! Great material too. I may need another. Buzz
I think this does one of two things: Gives you an idea what to do or an idea what not to do! Lol Buzz
Thank you for sharing your SS experiment. I find it fascinating. I heard this week that 43% of retirees have no savings.
Such a high percentage! Buzz
I love that you’re holding your own! And congratulations on being retired for one year! It’ll be interesting if you get antsy this second winter and feel the itch for a part-time job or seasonal job.
Thank you and I wonder the same thing. I don't think my wife could handle another winter with me. Lol Buzz
Thank you for doing these. It helps me think ahead.

I think your panels are paying off!
Love watching a fellow Buckeye! Keep it up!

The more we save the better. It's hard to live on SS if you want to travel. Hotels, gas and food are not cheap.
Happy Anniversary!

I just retired 2 weeks ago since work offered a good package with medical, so retirement came earlier than I expected, although I had planned to quit sooner than later. Will have to adjust the budget some and figure out this new chapter. Excited but doesn't seem real yet.
Get a good handle on expenses and rerun your tax estimates based on your new income. I figure my taxes are about $150 a month lower in retirement.

Still a great deal!
