    Rock picking, hoeing 1800 linear feet of sweet corn in the midday sun, helping grandpa sling 3" diameter 20' long irrigation pipe sections, shoveling 100 chickens worth of 💩 out of a tar paper roofed tin shack in 95 degree heat... Made all the little stuff my peers got worked up over seem pretty silly, and there's nothing quite like bacon and eggs what was grown less than 100ft from where you're eating it.

    I dated a girl from Minnesota for a while, even went up to visit her parents and home one year. She showed me the rock wall around the front 80 acre field made entirely from rocks that she and her brother picked as kids and her dad picked as a kid when he was their age. She told me how happy they were to be done with it that first year thinking they were done forever, only to find out they'd have to do it again the next year, and the next year, and the next year. IT BUILDS CHARACTER, their dad would shout from the back porch with a Miller in his hands as they lamented another season's rock picking. Beautiful land up there.

      Root systems keep the rocks in the ground for the most part. Its why the forest floor isnt covered in small rocks. Clear the ground down to open soil and every freeze thaw cycle brings every rock up an inch or 2. You'll be picking them for years in a new garden if you're ground is rocky like ours. Many places ive dug in ct were more rock than dirt. We would be short on backfill a lot of the time if the job called for rocks to be taken out. Putting it utility lines, planting trees, etc.

    • @TraceyAllen
      @TraceyAllen ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ctdieselnut Your average Black Hills South Dakota hay field will give you rocks by the semi truck load every year for many generations. My friends grand kids are picking rocks in the same field we did 30 years ago, so on and so forth since Custer first can through on his fateful trip to the Little Big horn.

      @billbarrett582 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TraceyAllen , I grew up 3 miles east of Caputa, just outside of Rapid City. The rock picking in that area is no joke. Dug up a 30 pound Fairburn agate digging a fence post hole one summer. It sat on our front porch for years, but long since has disappeared. Wish it was still around. I would slice it up and probably be able to sell it to make up for all the free labor I put in every summer picking rocks out of the field.

    Knew a guy with a field full of rocks that needed to be removed and, rather than forcing his boys to do the dreaded job, he put empty 55 gallon steel barrels at the field edges and began lobbing rocks at and into them. The boys joined him and started a contest about who could get the most rocks into the barrels. Dad wandered back to the house and wasn't surprised when the neighbor boys joined in on the rock throwing. A few days later the field was empty of rocks and the kids were carrying rocks back from the barrels to throw some more. Farm CEO expertise at its best.

    I always enjoyed picking up black walnuts inside the bullpen as a youngster more than tossing plowed up rocks (if i had a choice for the daytime weekend fun activities) Although then I had to crack and separate as many seasoned bucket fulls as fresh I picked up... 🤔 And apparently disposable nitrile/latex or any type of kitchen gloves didn't exist besides the single pair my mom had at home that were off limits for me to use... Usually the black stain would nearly be worn off my hands by the next weekend it was time to go to my grandparents house and repeat the process... 🤲🏿 🤣 Top tip, pay more attention to the bull's location than where the easiest clusters of walnuts are to snatch up, or be quick at climbing trees... Trust me on that last part! 😂👍(Also pick the grapes fast enough to keep the birds away, or be prepared to play hide and seek with an old man shooting a .22lr over your head... I dunno if he could see me, but he could damn sure see the bird 3 feet away 😆)

    To drill through the other side of metal I let off on the pressure. If I get it right the hole finishes smoothly. Though, I still pucker up from memories of twisted wrists and drills chucked across the room. If you do it enough there is a change in sound to be learned when the bit is reaching the other side. It's the hole getting bigger as the point goes through. Or, you can strap a piece of wood to the other side to drill into. What's happening is as the metal being drilled gets thin the drill bit is able to grab the whole thickness and get all caught up. Literally, but not quite literally, biting off more than it can chew. Light pressure or a backing plate helps with this.

    My first job in high-school was picking rocks off a ranchers field, was a pivotal learning experience. I ran for the technical science trades as fast as I could, haven't touched a rock since. Hydroponics is good, no dirt or watering, weeding, rocks etc

    Ah, joys of parenting! You sounded like myself with my two younger ones. Even the answer "i don't like you today". And the "i'm not here to be your friend".
